Who: Amy Santiago and Chris Argent
What: Random encounter
Where: Starbucks
When: Tuesday afternoon
Warnings: probably not
Status: closed/ongoing

So far, the new year had been pretty quiet for Amy. She was keeping a low profile and hadn't really gone out and been social too much. Not only was the weather cold and miserable, but the fact that she was coming up on a year in town was really difficult to believe. In some ways, it felt like the time had flown, but she also was having a hard time remembering the sound of Holt's voice or Terry's smile and that made her sad.

After working the early shift at the range today, she decided to stop by Starbucks and treat herself to some fancy espresso drink. Cops tended to stick with terrible black coffee for expediency and it was nice to indulge now and again.

She got her drink and decided to settle in at one of the empty tables in the shop to enjoy it before she braved the cold again. While she was people watching, she spotted a familiar face come in and get in line. She waited until he got his order to say anything. "Hey, Chris."

Chris had a late shift at the store and he'd had an early shift Guarding Jill, which meant he had a couple hours to himself. Definitely better than the days where he was running from dawn until nearly midnight if not later with barely a chance to eat. He had those days, knew how to function on them, but was always grateful when they were over.

His first stop was Starbucks; there was no way he was going right back out in that cold, so he turned to look for a table and heard Amy's voice. "Hey, yourself," he said with a smile as he walked over to her table. "Mind if I join you?"

"Not at all," Amy said, wrapping her hands around her cup. "It's so cold out there that I was afraid my drink would freeze if I tried taking it outside."

It was a lame attempt at a joke, but it was something. Amy wasn't always great at small talk. Or jokes. Especially when it involved talking to attractive men.

"I wouldn't be surprised," he said with a slight laugh as he slid into the seat across from her. "It's nasty out there, and I say that as somebody who's gotten pretty used to this weather by now."

He took a sip of his coffee. "So, what've you been up to since the last time I saw you?" he asked curiously. "I've pretty much just been working all the time."

It was what he did, wasn't really that big a change.

Amy looked a little embarrassed when he asked what she'd been up to. "Uh, not much more than that," she admitted. "Reading when I'm not at work. I know I should probably attempt to be more social, but this cold weather makes it difficult to want to leave the apartment."

Plus in order to be social, you had to actually have friends, and making them wasn't a life skill that Amy excelled at.

"Good to know there's yet another workaholic on the team," Chris said with a good-natured smile. "I had that unfortunate tendency drummed into me at... well, at an unfortunately young age."

Thanks, Gerard. Really.

"And I certainly don't blame you on the weather. It makes everybody a little more sluggish, I think."

It was impossible not to notice how cute Chris was when he smiled and Amy found herself smiling back automatically even as her cheeks warmed a bit. Hopefully she wasn't visibly blushing.

"I'm from New York, so you wouldn't think it would bother me," she said. "But I guess since I don't have as much keeping me busy here, I notice it more."
