Rand was baling hay, and working hard, sweat gleaming off of muscled arms and body and smiling. Sure, work was annoying sometimes, and boring, but it could also be a little fun, and he liked the feel of it. He had noticed, lately, that it seemed to be easier for him to do the things he did, and he liked that. He did wish he could get off early and go steal Mat to fishing with Perrin, but he knew his dad would get on him if he tried that. He wanted to go fishing through. Taylor Mantield had spotted some big fish, or so he said. And Mat, Rand, and Perrin thought it would be fun to catch them, and cook them. Rand loved fish. He was turning to grab another bale when he suddenly realized he was somewhere else, somewhere cold, and on top of somewhere high. Rand blinked and rubbed his arms as he looked around at the snow-covered roof, and then peered over the side, staring as he realized he was more than two stories up. He looked out and beheld what had to be the biggest city in the world! But how had he gotten here? And where was he? His dad was so going to tan his hide! “Oh no…” *** Nyssa was reacquainting herself with the city, which for her meant moving rooftop to rooftop. She was, at least, in regular clothes for once, her boots being her only from home own besides her bow. She jumped onto the next rooftop when she saw someone appear. That was a first, even for her, though she assumed it was the Dome being the Dome. She made her way across towards the roof. “You okay?” She called out, breeze whipping her hair across her face for a moment. “You just get here?” Because clearly he looked a little dumbstruck. She was already wondering why her. It wasn't like she really wanted to be helpful but maybe it would go a long way to proving to the others she really wasn't all that bad. Mostly. *** Rand jumped when he heard the voice. “Hmmm? Me, I’m -----weejfgvfg” He stumbled, feet slipping on the snow, and felt himself tip for a moment toward the space below him, before his hands caught the edge of a brick and tightened. There was a whirl of nausea, and suddenly he was, somehow, suddenly standing with his back against the chimney he had grabbed, and panting as his heart tried to climb out of his throat. “I’m good, yes, uhm, Yes, just got here. Oh mannnn.” His hands were shaking and his legs too and he felt like the world was whirling around him, with black spots coming to his vision. “Can’t--- can’t breathe...” *** “Uh take it easy kid. Sit down. Take slow breaths. This place is pretty crazy, I know.” She rubbed the bridge of her nose as she looked at him. Lord help her she didn't have patience for this. Except she clearly did. She'd nursed Sara back to health once. She could handle this. “Stay with me, you got a name?” Nyssa ran a hand through her hair. “Focus, please don't pass out on me. It's cold and a long way to the clinic.” *** Rand slowly felt the darkness recede and swallowed as he slumped down. Right. Breathing. That was important. He smiled at her as a wind swirled down from the forests and hills, and through the buildings, and brushing over his shirtless top. He really wished he had his shirt, and his cloak, and maybe his better boots, now, too. “My pa is so going to kill me. I don’t remember getting drunk or taking a ride to the biggest city ever, but somehow, here I am. When he finds out, he is so going to tan my hide.” he looked around, still, a little wide-eyed, still feeling and looking pale. “Where am I? Who are you?” *** She leaned on the wall and shook her head. “You're not drunk or anything. This place kidnaps people via some kind of magic. Unfortunately there's no real way out but small bonus, you're still home too. It's fucked up.” Nyssa shrugged a bit. “Madison Valley, Indiana. It's 2018 and I'm Nyssa. You got an name, kid?” *** Rand sank to sit on the roof and stared at her. Half her words made no sense to him, and he sighed as she asked his name. “I’m Rand, miss, Rand al’Thor, and it’s a pleasure meeting you. I’ve never heard of Madison, or Indiana, for that matter. And what is 2018?” He was confused. A lot, by everything. “Is this the capital of some country to the North? Or… South? Or somewhere far away from the Two Rivers?” *** A brow arched upwards - “A pleasure, Rand.” she smirked a touch then shrugged. “It’s in the United States. Two rivers? Where’s that?” she asked looking at him sideways. “It’s the year 2018.” she said after a moment. Lord help her, she ran into someone who doesn’t even know the years. She sighed softly. “Madison Valley is a city, in the state of Indiana , within the country of the United States of America, north American continent.” she rattled off. ** “Two Rivers is the region, Emond’s Field is the town I live in. And it’s 918 NE. 2018 is… a huge time later!!” he flailed. “And I have never heard of any of those places.” Rand sat down abruptly and waved a hand. “This is crazy. Am I crazy? How is any of this even…?” He looked up at her, and swallowed. “I am so confused.” *** “Welcome to what is probably the future. Time is funny here.” She shrugged a bit. She didn't think he was crazy. She'd felt very similar the first time she'd been here. “You're not crazy. It's, for lack of a better explanation, magic. Your friends and family won't even know you're home, you're still there as if nothing happened. It's complicated.” She shrugged a little. “The welcoming committee will be here soon. How old are you, by the way?” *** “Argh.” he headwalled, thunking his head against the wall behind him. “I don’t even… how?” He groaned as he looked up at her. “Magic? Do the Aes Sedai run this place then?” Those were the only people he had ever heard of who did something called magic. “17. Of age back home, but not really old enough to do anything.” He nodded. “Welcoming committee? Do they know more about this place?” *** “Uh no, the poor people who are locals aren't really skilled in such things. They don't know what's going on either.” She only shrugged gently. “You'll probably get a guardian here, someone of age to take care of you until you're 18. Of course they'll be able to teach you about this time.” She smiled warmly. “Yeah, sort of. They're not terribly helpful but they'll find you a place, they're just rather stiff.” *** Rand squinted and nodded. “Okay. Uhm, who would it be, do you think?” he wasn’t too sure about this. What would his dad think? “Okay.” He sighed and looked over as he heard a noise, to see several people climbing over the edge of the roof. “Is that them?” He was a little scared suddenly. *** “I don't know. It is isn't something I have not had any experience.” She smiled faintly then looked back at the people. “Yes, they are them.” Nyssa laughed a bit, “they're awkward aren't they?” She leaned back and waved them over. It was a nicer greeting than they'd gotten from her. She'd pointed a bow at them. Then laughed. *** Rand nodded and stood, and listened to what the people said, understanding very little. When eh said that, they turned from him and handed documents to Nyssa, before retreating… very quickly. Which worried Rand, just a little. “What did they give you?” he glanced at Nyssa, worried. *** Nyssa looked at the documents, then cursed in Arabic. Her fingers looking over the documents then the words they'd spoken to her. She plucked a small dagger from her boot and sent it after them. If she'd wanted to hit then she would have. Instead she missed. “Money, a phone to connect to the network, and they've decided I am to be your guardian.” Her lips pressed together. This was a cruel joke. Sending her back here then giving her a ward. ** Rand ducked as she threw a dagger, eyes going wide. “What was that for?” he stared at her, and then blinked. “You?” Oh, well, at least he knew her already. Except that was not a happy look on her face. She looked like Nynaeve when she had tasted a bad lemon. “Uhm… you look mad. I could go after them, asking them to assign someone else?” *** “I am not a good person, Rand. I am not generally kind.” Sara was going to laugh say her. But she sighed. “No it will be fine. Perhaps it will be enough to convince a few of my old friends I mean well.” She laughed softly then sighed. “Come then, I will show you the modern era.” *** “You seem pretty kind to me.” He eyed her, then smiled a little, and nodded. Might as well follow. He was utterly lost. “Lead on, Matron Nyssa. I’ll follow you. “ As he nodded, then he smiled. “Do they have bows and arrows around here?” *** Nyssa tilted her head back and laughed. “Only because you are not a threat to me.” She smiled gently then nodded, “Come then.” She stepped off the side, landing on the roof just below. “Sorry habit. Stairs to the left.” She waited then nodded, “though most likely not what you think. Or know. We will get you settled. Then I shall show you.” *** Rand stared as she went down and shook his head, then went down the stairs, following her. “Okay. I was pretty good with one back home. If these are not too different, maybe I can learn.” He paused and glanced back up, then at her. “And can you teach me to do what you just did?” *** “You don't need a bow here, but you'll see” Nyssa took in a deep breath, “perhaps. We shall see, I am not the best teacher in the world but perhaps.” She raked a hand through her hair, then sighed, turning to bring him towards the apartments, sighing. It was a long night. ** “Oh, how do you get food then? Do you farm?” And then he saw a car, and eeped, and fell backward. “What is that???” He stared at the multiple things whizzing by, eyes wide, and the electric lights, and… “This place is… I don’t…. What?” What was this place? *** “Welcome to 2018, that was a car. A vehicle.” She laughed, then slung an arm around him. “Prepare for your world to be shattered. We buy food that others farm. It will be like nothing you've ever seen.” “Come it will take time. But you will learn.” She grinned, softly. ** Rand swallowed. “That sounds painful. “ he nodded, listening, and nodded. “I will, Matron, I promise.” Somehow, he would learn. Wow. “Lead on.I wont fail you.” He steeled himself and nodded. The people of Two Rivers, born of Manetheren, were stubborn, a warrior race turned farmers, where the blood of the first ones still ran deep. *** She grinned at him, thinking perhaps, this would not be so bad after all. She licked her lips, then smiled. “Just Nyssa, I'm not that old. Matron sounds so old.” Dark eyes fluttered shut for a moment before she smirked. She'd show him the apartment, show him things he didn't know, she was preparing for a long night. ** |
