Zee was at verdant. Big surprise right? Only she'd given up on watching John out of the corner of her eye and was hugging her glass of whiskey like it was a lifeline. Okay so it was. She was tired of waiting. Tired of everything. Tired of being her.
Sorta because NYE had been delightful. That part of her she loved. The rest, meh. She was tastefully not in fishnets and heels, heels yes fishnets no. She'd given in to the cold and was in jeans and a long sleeved black shirt that, if you looked at it sideways, glittered with threads of silver.
She laid her head on the bar and groaned.
***
Sam hadn’t really had a chance to say much to Zee since she’d come in. He’d given her the drink, but otherwise he’d been busy. Eventually he took his break. Rather than go to the back, he moved around to sit in the empty seat beside Zee.
“You wanna talk about it?” he asked her. He barely knew her, but he decided he wanted to get to know her better, because why not?
***
She flirted with your girlfriend, totally a good reason to get to know her better. Right? Right. “Uh do I get to punch someone for being alive at the end?” She held up a hand, “kidding mostly. I'm just tired.” She smiled faintly.
“Tired of watching him work his way through town, tired of giving a shit.” Then she shook her head. “So let's skip the what's wrong with Zee thing, might be too depressing. You have a good Christmas? Fun New years?”
Dodging the touchy stuff was a good plan from her. She hated the fact she just couldn't actually let go. What a sad excuse for a magician, though she was better. She wasn't moping so much as angry and annoyed. Hard to ignore what was publicly posted after all.
***
“Say the word and I’ll punch him for you,” Sam offered. He’d do it too. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d gone toe to toe with Constantine, and probably wouldn’t be the last either.
He rolled his shoulders, though, when Zee went on and shifted the conversation from the potential fun of delivering a smack down to John Constantine. “It was nice. We had Christmas, Sara’s birthday, and New Years one right after another.” And in particular, the celebrations with Diana involved had been very nice.
“Busy week, but yeah. Good,” he told her. He’d ask how her holiday was, but it was kind of obvious and he didn’t want to put her in a position to have to lie. Or tell the truth. Even though Sam was more in touch with his feelings than his brother a lot of guys, he sometimes knew when to back off on the over share.
“And I mean, new year, new start, right? Things can only get better.” Which wasn’t true, but it sounded nice.
***
“Any time you want, Sam, I'm down to watch him get decked a few times. I think even if my knee jerk reaction is to patch him up, he deserves it from time to time.” It wouldn't even be her last time going toe to toe with the man.
“I'm glad. I know Sara was excited about all the things people were doing for her birthday. I'm glad it went well.” She smiled warmly. The truth hurt. The truth sucked but she'd have answered him.
Because she'd had her own fun that week. She'd learned to let go a little. Sometimes that was a start all on its own. “Mhm yes something like that. I've started a new project, had a little of my own fun, and despite how angry someone makes me, I put on a damn good show. It felt good.”
***
“And I’m down for kicking his ass. Seems we are well matched in that respect.” Sam really did enjoy punching Constantine. It felt carthic for him. Just the thought of it actually made Sam feel better when he felt like he wanted to punch something.
He nodded, when she said Sara must have been excited. And as she went on about her new project and what not. “You were amazing the other night,” he confirmed. He’d seen her show at Verdant, though he’d been working, everything had kind of slowed down to watch her.
***
“Team kick Constantine’s ass. Though I think a better name might be worth it.” She laughed softly, smiling. Punching him, or throwing him out on his ass, made her feel better when she was angry at him.
“It felt good. I'm used to touring when I'm not doing Justice League stuff and whatnot. I haven't put on a show since I got here. Then when I went home, I had just done a show at Madison Square garden.” Her nickname was mistress of magic for a reason.
***
“Hrm. We’ll have to think of a good name for this team. Because I am so on board with it.” He didn’t entirely hate Constantine. He actually appreciated how he’d been around, looking after Dean there for a while. He knew the man had been bound to it, but still. It was the fact he’d interfere with Sam’s personal mission of self destruction and then he’d actually lobbied for killing Dean when the Mark was over taking him. Sam would never, under any circumstances, ever abide by killing Dean.
“I’m sure Sara would be down for having you perform at Verdant from time to time, not just the big nights like New Year’s Eve. I could talk to her if you wanted?” He thought it would be good for business. Of course the club was Sara’s baby, and the decisions were hers to make, but Sam didn’t imagine she’d object to this one.
***
Deep down she didn't hate Constantine. She loved him. Therein laid the problem. He didn't want her in his life and she couldn't stay away.
“That would be fun, actually. I'm so used to performing I feel weird not. I'm more than happy to do stuff at Verdant, even do more adult shows to mix it up a bit.if she'd be cool with that I'd love it.”
***
“I’ll let you and Sara work out the details.” He had no doubt Sara would agree to having Zee perform. Sam wasn’t the most business minded, but he knew a good thing when he saw it. He had a feeling adding Zee to the schedule could bring in a bit more business.
It was definitely something he would bring to Sara. She’d have to make the final decision, of course, but he was confident he wasn’t just blowing wind at Zee. “Even if you have a bad habit of throwing snowballs at me when I’m not looking,” he added with a wink that said he really didn’t mind.
***
“Oh, you poor thing, I’m pretty sure you’ll live.” she laughed as she pushed her hair out of her eyes. “I would enjoy that, I think. It’d be good for everyone.” she waved a hand “You figure it out and I promise I won’t blast you with too many snowballs or magic anything.”
She grinned at him, laughing a bit. “Thanks, Sam, you’re a good person you know that?” she grinned again as she shook her head a bit, she needed something to focus on.
***
He reached out to give her hand a squeeze. “Yeah.” Whether or not he was actually a good person was up for debate, but he tried to be. He tried to do good things and make good choices. He didn’t always succeed, but it was definitely easier here in Madison Valley.
“But you are too. Don’t ever forget that,” he said to her with a grin to match her own.
***
Zee paused for a moment then returned the squeeze. Zee often lost herself in her own world, her own shadows, and tended to forget that people outside actually wanted her to be her. According to her, trying to make the good choices was what made you good. Not the fact you sometimes made the wrong ones.
She winked at him as she pushed to her feet, and blew him a kiss. That, magically pressed lightly against his cheek. “Careful, I might take that to people want me hanging around more.” she smirked.
***
Sam just gave her a small smile. “I for one wouldn’t mind that. If you were around more, I mean.” If he weren’t in a relationship, he might be flirting. But his relationship with Sara was pretty solid. Open to having a third join in, sure, but he was, at the end of the day, only interested in Sara.
***
Zee didn't take him the wrong way, oh she was a flirt but she mostly just flirted with Sara to tease him a little. She did think Sara was hot and fun to flirt with, obviously, but he seemed to enjoy watching Sara flirt a bit. That didn't mean he wanted the same. Zee got that. Even if she toed the line just a touch sometimes.
So she smiled, took it for the offer of friendship that is was and nodded. “I look forward to getting to know you better. I'll catch you later, Sam. Give Sara a kiss for me.” She grinned before “hsinav” she literally vanished before his eyes.
