Who: Mal & Harry Dresden
When: Sunday Afternoon
Where: The woods
What: Lets do magic!
Warnings: Probably none, but who knows!
Status: Closed/In-Progress

In theory, Mal hadn't held up her hand to help Harry when Sigrun had reached out for volunteers. Mal hadn't been very forthcoming with most of the magic users in Madison Valley whenever there was chatter on the network. She had her reasons. Mal's magic was different in her opinion. It was dark and light, bad and good, dangerous and helpful. It was everything that made Mal who she was, but also who she didn't want to be.

Her magic was special, though. Mal had worked so hard to ensure that it never defined her. That wasn't how magic worked. You controlled it, but you also let it flow freely through you. It was a part of you, but did not make you.

That was just part of what she was hoping to share with Harry. The idea that all this permission was needed was ridiculous in Mal's opinion. She didn't need anyone's permission or approval. Especially the people of Auradon and Ben. If they couldn't appreciate her for who she really was, that was not where she was meant to be.

With her spell book in her lap, Mal was sitting on what seemed to be a tree trunk. It was a bit knotted and twisted in it's shape as a sign it was made with magic that was definitely a bit darker than most. It was hardly dangerous, though. The area Mal had found was warmer and void of the bitter cold that was everywhere else. Another spell thanks to her. She had even conjured up some lanterns and some hot chocolate.

If Harry didn't learn anything from her, he could at least see what sort of things one could do with magic when they were having fun.

Harry came jogging in out of the forest and grinned as he saw her, eyes curious and eager and warm. "Hi!" He let his eyes meet hers and sweep away like usual, to avoid the soulgaze magic. He didn't want to do that again.

"Sorry if I'm late. Just had an errand to run."

Mal looked up at him and shrugged. "It's fine. I'm not really one for being punctual all the time either." If at all.

Closing the book, she set it aside for the time being. He wasn't ready for that book, but in Mal's opinion, no one ever was. She even had to question herself when she flipped through the pages. A lot of bad had come from it, but also some okay things.

"So, you can do magic, huh? Lets see it." She smirked and crossed her arms. Mal preferred getting right to the point when it came to magic and mischief.

"Ah, okay." he gave the book a curious look, then hmmmed. The thing he was best at was fire, so. He gathered his will, and concentrated on a bit of wood in the center of the clearing, then spoke. "Fuego!" And a bolt of fire hurled out and slammed into the wood, turning it to ash immediately.

"Like that?"

Mal had taken a few steps back at the sight of the fire and her eyes went wide as the wood was burned away. Letting out a low whistle, Mal stepped over to the pile of ash and toed at it with her boot.

"You definitely got some power behind you, kid." Mal was impressed. Genuinely so. Making her way over to Harry, Mal circled him once and settled to stand in front of him.

"Anything else?"

Harry blushed, then nodded. "Uhm sure." He had been practicing this one, and he summoned his concentration. "Invisio." And he shimmered and vanished from sight, the air blurry at first, then calm.

Under the veil, he shifted, slowly, moving to the right, and forward a few steps, then moved to the right a little more, careful to disturb nothing on the ground and to stop softly. He held it for long seconds before letting the veil drop and reappearing.

"I'm still working on that one."

Mal grinned when he vanished. Looking this way and that, she applauded once he reappeared. "Now that? That is a great trick. What are you working on with it? Holding the spell longer? Can you make someone else invisible?" That would have been handy when they had been trying to get the fairy godmother's wand.

That would have been helpful during a lot of situations.

"So, you do big magic, huh? Not just little things?" Mal asked as she went to retrieve her book. Returning to Harry, Mal held it up to show hi the cover and bindings.

"This is my magic. And a few other things, but it's mostly all in here. Plus other spells I come up with." Which didn't always work as she found out during the holidays.

"Well, I am working on both of those, and also to make it work on scent and heat, as well as vision. It's harder than the others because air and I do not agree as well as fire." he grumbled at this, being annoyed.

"I do a lot of different things. But fire is the easiest. And kinetics."

He peered at the book and goggled. "That is so cool! Is that a grimoire? I've heard of those! So cool!" he was bouncy.

"I've never invented my own spell. I need more study, I think, before I do that."

"Whoa there." Mal made a face and took a cautious step back. While she enjoyed using the spells from her book, she'd never seen someone quite as ecstatic about it as Harry seemed to be. Maybe it was something about guys named Harry since Harry Hook often reacted the same way. Silly Harrys.

"Is this a...what? No. No, it's just a spellbook." Of course, Mal wasn't familiar with the other term, which meant the same. Her initial thought was that it was something dark. Much darker and perhaps more evil than even her mother's magic considering the name. "I mean, it has curses and things, but I don't use those." Not intentionally, but certainly not the ones her mother had used time and again.

Clutching the book tightly against her, Mal suddenly felt strange about having shown it off like that. Flashing it around without a second thought. "It's not important, though. Your magic. You can use fire and you're working on air. What's this stuff about kinetics? What's that even do?"

Harry blinked and backed up, raising his hands and shaking his head. "Sorry?"

He blinked at her words. "Ah, grimoire just means spellbook. Like... especially if it has been passed down. Sorry." He shrugged, flushing. Sometimes, he still forgot other magic users were not from his world.

He nodded, feeling awkward now. Darn it, he had messed things up.

"Kinetics? That's the magic of storing kinetic motion and releasing it when you want to." He raised one hand, again and showed off a simple silver band. "This ring stores the kinetic energy of the motion I make every day, and can release it when I want to, giving an impact that is stronger than a normal punch."

It wasn't Harry's fault. Not at all. Mal watched him pull back and she shook her head. "No. It's fine." She was supposed to be letting loose. Opening up and having fun. That was what Evie had instructed her to do. So far, Mal wasn't fairing well.

"Grimoire, huh? That's new for me. I've never heard of it called that before. It's just been the spellbook, you know?" Easing her stance, letting her shoulders drop the tension, Mal offered a slight grin. Okay. It was all going to be alright.

"Everything in that band? So, you use it to punch people? Well, magically punch them? Wicked. Do you have to use it a lot? Back home I mean."

Harry took a long breath, and smiled tentatively. She seemed over it. Good, good. yay!

He smiled again and nodded. "I dunno. It might mean different things in different worlds. But in mine, it usually just meant a really old spell book that had been passed down. " He nodded. "Cool."

"Yes. And... I use it mostly on wood." he swallowed, going a little paler. "I've only used it on a person once. When I was defending myself against my first master. He tried to put me in thrall." Harry shivered, looking down at the ring.

"Sounds like he deserved it if you ask me." Mal had her own opinions about taking over others and having control of them. She had dabbled in it once or twice, but it never turned out well for anyone involved. "Well, good. I'm glad you have it. Never know when someone else might try that." Then again, this place seemed pretty low key. That was really a shame.

"Want to see something cool?" Mal grinned. "I mean, besides the warming spell and lanterns and hot chocolate and stuff." Plucking an acorn from the ground, Mal held it out to him in her hand. She moved her finger in a few motions creating a faint trail of green shimmering smoke before the acorn turned into a brightly-colored cupcake.

"Try it. Don't worry. It won't put you to sleep or anything. That's so last century."

he grinned and nodded at her. "I would love to." he smiled at her and watched her do the thing, and his eyes got wide.

"Okay!" This was so cool!" he smiled as he took a bite of the cupcake, eyes wide. "Wow!"

"If you thought that was cool?" Mal smirked and felt comfortable enough to open her spellbook once more. She would, of course, stray away from the darker spells that littered the pages.

"Just wait until you see this." It was going against rules set by Harry's guardian, yes, but Mal wasn't one to follow them anyway. She wasn't trying to corrupt Harry, but it was her opinion that all young magic users should have some fun every now and again.

Harry raised his eyebrows and peered at her and her spellbook, waiting to see what would happen, and glad he had come out.

This was going to be awesome!

His eyes shone as he peered at her magic. "Cool!"
