Evan held the cell phone in his hand for a long moment, just staring at the dark screen. His palms were starting to sweat, and he knew he was over thinking things. He worried that Connor wouldn't want to talk to him, that Connor would be mad at him for telling Turner there was something to be concerned about. It was Evan's fault Connor was at the clinic, after all, and what little Evan knew about the real Connor, he knew there was a good chance he'd be upset. And he knew, too, that he would be well within his rights to be upset. Evan had ratted him out, tattled, whatever. For his own good, but still.
He sighed, berated himself. He was an idiot. Connor probably didn't like him at all. He lied about being friends, he refused to smoke with him, he told Turner that Connor was in a bad way. he hadn't actually told her anything, not outright. But he'd given her enough information that she'd been able to fill in the blanks. He hadn't necessarily confirmed that Connor was suicidal, but he hadn't denied it either. Connor should hate him, and Evan was a fool if he thought there was even a remote chance the other boy would like him.
The haunting melody of the song he'd sang for Connor's parents the first night he'd had supper with them careened through his head.
All we see is sky for forever We let the world pass by for forever Feels like we could go on for forever this way, this way All we see is light for forever 'Cause the sun shines bright for forever Like we'll be alright for forever this way Two friends on a perfect day
But there was no perfect day, there was no for forever for the two of them. Why should there be? As usual, Evan had messed everything up. He sighed and decided he wasn't going to make the call at all. And then he realised he was pushing the buttons, as if his hands had a mind of their own. And the line was ringing on the other end, and panic seized Evan like a hand around his throat, but he couldn't seem to make himself hang up the call.
