"No, no," Evan's hand twitched. "I know. I...everyone has been so nice already." Which didn't mean Evan felt like he belonged. It just meant people were nice. Or pretending to be nice. It was easy to pretend. Easier for some people and not so easy for Evan at all.
With Evan, for the most part what you see was the real deal. Except for the things he hid from himself. "You...you're very nice. Kind." Evan nodded. And picked at a loose flap of rubber on the sole of his shoes.
