He felt awkward, like he was standing over her when he really wasn't. He was just standing because sitting made him feel vulnerable, especially in a place like this. He wanted to be high up in the trees, not down low on the ground.
"I, oh. Um. I...I'm...I'm okay," he told her, stammering over the words. He avoided eye contact, keeping his gaze focused on the ground at his feet. The snow had been cleared in this area, and the ground was dark from the moisture of the snow. It gave him a solid place to keep his focus, so he could awkwardly avoid eye contact.
"And you?" he asked, the words stunted, clearly conveying his anxiety. "Areyouokay?" he asked, talking too fast, to get it all out quickly.
