After what happened at Brunch, Sue knew they needed to talk and get on the same page. She wasn't sure what had caused the shift, or even when it had happened, but it had and they needed to talk about it like adults. Since she had Archie and Fred at her apartment, Sue asked Adam if she could come by after her shift at the genealogy shop with dinner and a bottle of wine. She hadn't gone with the dreaded 'we need to talk', but that had been the jist of it.
She knocked on his door and offered him a small smile when he opened it. "Got your favorite," Sue said by way of greeting. "And mine." At that, she held up the bottle of wine. Hopefully they'd be able to sort out their missteps. Over the past couple of days, she realized that she did care about Adam but she was still insecure about how she fit into his life.
***
Chaos often reigned at Adam’s house thanks to Star and Marco, but when he made plans with Sue to come over to talk, he gave the kids fifty bucks and sent them to the movies so he could have some peace and quiet for this conversation. He wasn’t entirely sure where Sam, Mary and Castiel were, but he’d given them the heads up about what was going on and they’d thankfully made themselves scarce.
“Thanks,” Adam said, taking the bottle from her with a shaky smile. He’d been doing a lot of thinking since brunch and his conversations with Jaime, Nick, and Clay definitely helped him put things in perspective. He liked Sue a lot, but it seemed like they’d been drifting further apart over the past couple of months instead of getting closer. “Smells good. You didn’t have to bring over food.”
***
She knew she didn’t have to, but given the shaky smile he was giving her, Sue had a feeling she knew where this conversation was going. The thing was, if they weren’t on the same page, she still wanted to be friends with him and that meant behaving like an adult. “Conversations that aren’t necessarily fun are sometimes better with good food,” she countered with a small smile as she followed him inside.
“And while I never actually said the dreaded ‘we have to talk’, I think we both know that something isn’t working.” Sue wanted to see if they could make it work, but she also wasn’t interested in trying to force Adam into being someone he wasn’t or for him to do the same to her. She moved toward the kitchen so they could get settled and start to eat.
“I’m sorry for being so upset about Thanksgiving.” That was as good a place as any to start.
***
Adam followed her to the kitchen so he could get plates and glasses for their meal. It would be a good place to sit and talk. If the kids or anyone else happened to come home, at least they’d have a little warning. As soon as she mentioned conversations that weren’t fun, he knew that she had probably been doing the same kind of thinking that he had.
“I’m sorry for being a dick at brunch,” he said. He really hadn’t been fair to her or to Fred and there was no reason to make things so uncomfortable.
***
It was comfortable, if a little stilted, for them to get dinner situated. She uncorked the wine and poured them both glasses. "I appreciate that," Sue replied. He had definitely been a dick, but she'd been unfair to him about showing up, too. There'd been a lot of judgement being passed around lately and she was half at fault for that.
"It bothered me a lot that you didn't come for Thanksgiving after you said you'd try to come." That was where a lot of it had started, so Sue offered up that first. "I know I didn't give you a lot of notice and I know that Paige, Lucas and the twins are important to you." She paused and pushed some of the food around her plate for a moment. "I just thought I was important enough for you to come have dinner with me and Archie."
***
“It’s not just Paige, Lucas, and the twins,” Adam said. “It’s Nick and the rest of the Pack too. They’re my family, Sue. And, yes, you’re important to me, but it caught me by surprise that you’d make other plans for the holiday knowing that I usually spend them with the Pack.”
Especially since it was so last minute. “And I’ll be honest. It sounded like you were having a pretty cozy and small family thing and I kind of felt awkward about the idea of showing up.”
Which, as Nick pointed out, was probably a red flag. Ever since she’d decided to adopt Archie, Adam wondered about his place in her life and now with Fred in town, he felt like his position was even more tenuous.
***
"I didn't realize that meant you just automatically spent every holiday with them," she replied with a frown. Sure, there'd been a handful of events she'd attended at the Pack House over the past year and a half that she'd been in town, but somehow Sue hadn't ever really put it together that Adam just automatically was always going to be there from start to finish.
"Feeling awkward about showing up never stopped me from going with you to the Pack house when I was invited," she pointed out. She'd only gone when invited to the monthly events the Pack house put on because it did make her uncomfortable to be around so many people that she didn't know at all. Some she knew better than others, but for the most part, she didn't know any of them and it always felt like she was intruding on something that she wasn't a part of.
"But I went because you asked me to, because you're important to me."
***
Adam didn’t think that her feeling uncomfortable about attending events at the Pack house was quite the same since they were huge, open events that the entire town was invited to. The dinner she planned was a lot smaller and more intimate. But he wasn’t going to argue with her, because he knew that he should have at least called to let her know he wasn’t going to make it instead of just not showing up.
“You know, we’re both saying that we’re important to each other, but… maybe we have different ideas of what that means,” he said.
***
“I was thinking the same thing,” she replied with a small sigh. Sue didn’t fully understand what had happened to cause this divide, but she wasn’t sure the right move was to try to bridge the gap. It had been a little harder to keep her relationship strong while also juggling taking care of Archie, adjusting to having Fred in their lives, and keeping up with Izzy all while also working.
“I’m sorry.” This wasn’t how she wanted their relationship to go, but she was glad that they were able to have a conversation about it instead of shouting or sniping at each other.
***
“So am I,” Adam said. Their food was getting cold while they talked, but this seemed too important of a conversation to eat during. “I think we have different priorities right now. And that’s okay, but… I don’t think they’re really compatible.”
He was nowhere near ready to be a parent, was happy to be the doting uncle to the twins and help corral Star and Marco. She adopted her teenage ward because she wanted a family. Those were pretty diametrically opposed viewpoints.
“Maybe part of the attraction was the forbidden angle,” he added with a slight smile. “We can tell Johnny it’s all his fault.”
***
“I pushed you. I shouldn’t have.” She’d been upfront about wanting a family, but she had thought she was okay waiting. Archie had changed that almost as soon as he’d arrived and if she has to choose between Adam and Archie, she was going to chose her son. Being a mom just meant too much to her to hand that off, even if Fred being in town was the perfect excuse.
“I am all for blaming my brother,” she added, and she managed a small smile for her now ex-boyfriend. “Maybe I’m just being an idiot here but...still friends?” Sue was hopeful, but she’d also understand if that wasn’t in the cards, right now or never.
***
Adam reached across the table and took her hand. “Always friends,” he promised. “There’s no reason we can’t be.” After all, this was hardly an acrimonious split and they’d been friends for a long time before they actually tried the dating thing.
This was the first time since Savannah that he actually tried something serious and maybe he wasn’t as ready for it as he thought he was. Honestly, if it hadn’t been for Johnny being so vehemently against them flirting, he probably wouldn’t have given it a shot. He was glad he did, but he was also glad that they could handle this like mature adults.
***
Sue smiled more widely. Her life would've been a lot more boring without Adam in it, so she was glad that they could still be friends. "At least we're on the same page somewhere," she replied, making a bit of a joke. She gave his hand a squeeze for a brief moment before letting go so that they could get back to eating their dinner.
"So, fill me in on the twins, Star and Marco, how is everyone?" Sue suggested. It was easy from there to just have a normal conversation and even if it was a little awkward here and there, ultimately it was two friends having dinner. That was alright with her.
