WHO: Kenny McCormick and Nico di Angelo WHAT: Arguing WHEN: Early Friday morning WHERE: Horst's WARNINGS: Arguing Teenagers STATUS: Closed/Completed Gdoc
Nico didn’t like Kenny. It wasn’t anything Kenny’d done that made him feel that way. It was more something that Kenny hadn’t done. You weren’t supposed to come back from the dead. You weren’t supposed to die more than once. It was unnatural and wrong and it reminded Nico too much of the time when the Doors of Death had been propped open and the monsters (and worse) kept coming back again and again.
So without even really knowing Kenny personally, he annoyed him. And he wanted to stay away from him so that he wouldn’t just break and give him a piece of his mind for flaunting the rules so badly. It just wasn’t cool.
So when he got stuck at Horst’s with him this morning, he was not a happy Nico. Especially since he’d really wanted to sit down and have breakfast and warm up and there was only one free chair. With Kenny.
He frowned, and considered for a moment whether it was better to just go back to his cave and freeze, or sit with Kenny.
It was a difficult decision, but after a moment he went and sat in the chair without asking.
“It’s the last one left,” he said.
*** Usually Kenny would just grab his food and go, but since he had a bit of time before he had to go to work, he decided to sit and eat his breakfast instead. The place seemed pretty packed and he was lucky to have found an empty seat to himself. He started eating, checking his phone for awhile before he heard footsteps and the chair across from him scraping against the floor as someone sat down.
He didn't mind Nico. The kid seemed alright. Kenny just wished he'd shut up about the whole immortality thing. Yes, he was aware that what he did was not natural and was against the rules of nature or whatever. He didn't need to be reminded of it.
A quick glance around told him that Nico was right - this was the only seat left. "Okay then," he shrugged then returned to his phone. As long as Nico kept quiet, he was fine with him sitting there.
***
Too bad. Usually Nico didn’t have any problems keeping quiet, but about this, well, he just didn’t feel that he could stay quiet about it. It was just so wrong. It wasn’t evil exactly, but it felt evil to Nico, who scowled at him for a long while in silence first. Finally, he just couldn’t take it anymore, though.
“So, have you died lately?”
There was so much annoyance and scorn in Nico’s voice that several people near them turned around.
*** Kenny just pretty much ignored him. That is until the younger boy had spoken up in that tone that made him look up from his phone for a moment. After the initial shock wore off, though, he just shrugged and returned his gaze to his phone.
"Yep, I got run over by a truck on my way here," he said sarcastically. It was a lie. If he had gotten hit by a truck, his clothes wouldn't been covered in blood. But they were clean and fresh. He did die a couple weeks ago, though. At least, he was sure it was a couple weeks. Could've been a few weeks. He wasn't sure, he stopped keeping track a long time ago.
***
Nico had been around enough demigods to know sarcasm when he heard it. That didn’t mean that he appreciated it. His frown deepened.
“Well, too bad it didn’t take.”
It wasn’t that Nico hated him. He didn’t even dislike him on a personal level. It was just that what he did was so wrong, so against everything Nico knew, that he wished that he’d just die and stay dead and stop doing this awful thing.
*** "Well, maybe you'll get lucky and I'll choke on this muffin and that'll finally do me in." He doubted it though. There was a lot of things he didn't know about his immortality. He still aged like normal, did that mean he'd die for good eventually from old age? He didn't know and he guess he'd find out when the time came. For now, though, it was just something he had to deal with.
"But then death by muffin isn't something that happens often," he shrugged but then starting snickering because death by muffin sounded funny to him.
***
Nico, on the other hand, didn’t think it sounded very funny at all. Well, to clarify, he didn’t think that Kenny’s snickering about it was very funny. If he actually died and stayed dead by choking on a muffin then that might just be the funniest thing that Nico had ever heard. But he wouldn’t stay dead. He’d come back. And die again. And again. And again and again and again.
And it annoyed the shit out of Nico every single second. Sometimes it woke him up in the middle of the night annoying him.
“How do you get out? How do you come back?”
He still didn’t understand that part. He shouldn’t. He should just die and stay dead.
*** If he'd known Nico was losing sleep over it, Kenny would probably tell him to get over it. He couldn't control his coming back from the dead. He didn't even ask to become immortal. It just happened.
He didn't quite understand the first question, so he ignored it and just answered the second. "Dark and cosmic magic," he shrugged. At least, he guessed that's what it was. He still didn't know much of what happened. All he knew was his parents did some rituals from the Necronomicon, which was full of dark magic. And his immortality also had something to do with Cthulhu, who was a cosmic entity from deep space, currently in a death-like slumber deep in the Pacific Ocean.
***
“Last time dead things kept coming back to life it meant that Gaia was rising and trying to take over and destroy the world,” he spat. That was probably one reason that he hated it so much. The memories of that, and what had happened to him in Tartarus were not something he liked to be reminded of. By anything or anyone. He’d seen things in there that turned him ice cold when he thought of them under the noonday sun, things so horrific that he couldn’t even put words to them.
“I’m a necromancer,” he frowned. “It’s not that easy to bring people back from the dead. And when you do, they don’t come back like you.”
***
"I doubt that's what's happening now but it's too bad it isn't. Maybe she'll succeed in destroying the world and I won't have to listen to bratty kids anymore." Okay, he didn't actually want the world to end. Not really. But this kid was annoying that as long as he was gone, Kenny didn't mind the world ending so much.
"Hey, I was too young to remember the rituals. Go ask one of Cthulhu's cult members how they do them. Go ask Cthulhu himself." Maybe the kid will go insane from seeing him or die of fright or something. Highly doubtful since he doubted the Great Old One will appear here, but he could dream.
***
After Tartarus, it was hard to scare Nico anyway. Sorry, Kenny. Once you’ve been lost by yourself in the depths of the lair of the scariest monsters in the world, nothing much was scary anymore. That was the only good thing that had come out of that.
“Yeah, I don’t think he’s here,” he said. There was another important point for Kenny to remember. It wasn’t like they had oceans here. “Too bad, though. Maybe I could convince him to leave you dead next time.”
*** "Go ahead. I doubt he'd listen to you, though. The Great Old Ones don't really care for puny demigods and humans. Plus, Cthulhu fhtagn. I doubt he'll wake up anytime soon either. He will but not for a long time and hopefully we'll both be dead." Okay, so Cthulhu had awakened back in his world but he was defeated and was now back in R'lyeh.
"But until then, I'm just gonna die and come back because it's so fun," he grinned. It wasn't that fun, though, it was painful. But he enjoyed and sometimes took advantage over the fact that he could test the limits of his body and be okay.
***
“There’s no way it’s fun,” Nico said, calling his bluff. “I mean, yeah, sure. Sometimes if doesn’t hurt as much of others, but I’ve not met a single person in the Underworld who told me that dying was fun.”
He’d buy a lot of things, but he wasn’t stupid enough to buy that.
**** "That's because I've never been to the Underworld," he said sarcastically. He had been to Hell, though. That wasn't really fun but Satan was alright. When he wasn't torturing him, that is.
"But yeah, that part sucks. Like really fucking sucks. But the part where I can come back, that's pretty cool."
***
Nico scowled some more. For a long time. Dying was supposed to suck, although it didn’t always hurt. Old people who went in their sleep didn’t hurt. Freezing to death wasn’t supposed to hurt. Some ways to die definitely sucked more than others.
“So is there any death you wouldn’t come back from?”
Maybe he could make sure that was the one that happened, and fix this abomination.
*** Kenny just looked at the younger boy with a hint of amusement in his eyes. Now that he thought about it, it was kind of funny how worked up he got over all of this. He just died and came back. Big deal. No one else seemed to care, not even Death.
He paused and thought for a moment. "Old age maybe?" he shrugged. He did age like normal, sort of. He assumed he'll die from it eventually but he wasn't sure. "Sorry dude, but not a lot kills me."
He sipped his coffee. "Actually, there's a couple people here who can kill me for good. Go bug them."
***
Now that was a hint of good news. If someone here could kill him then he wasn’t completely immortal.
“Who?”
He had to have been expecting that question.
*** He was but he wasn't going to just tell him like that. If the guy really wanted to kill him, he could figure it out himself.
"Not telling but they're pretty obvious." One of them was very obvious. Surely Nico could figure out that one at least.
***
“Death,” he said. Obviously. She could kill anyone, couldn’t she? She was kind of like Thanatos. Or his dad. Or something like that.
He thought for a moment who else might be powerful enough to do kill him. There were a lot of powerful beings here, after all.
“Lucifer? Castiel?”
*** Kenny nodded as he finished up his muffin. He knew Nico would've figured that out.
"Yeah, Lucy too," he said but the next name caused him confusion. "Who the fuck is Castiel?"
***
“The other angel,” he said. “I wasn’t sure if he was as powerful as Lucifer or not.”
Apparently not, since Kenny didn’t know who he was.
*** "He's an angel, so I'd say yeah, he could kill me for good."
He honestly wasn't sure why he was even telling Nico how to kill him permanently. He wanted to die, sure, but not anytime soon. He was certain Death wouldn't do it, though. Even if she was upset with him, he was sure she wouldn't. Because she got everyone in the end and she had a lot of patience.
The other two, he wasn't sure about. He knew Lucifer and was on good terms with him. But would he kill him? Kenny wasn't sure. As for Castiel, well, he simply didn't know him so he didn't know what he'd do.
***
“Good,” Nico said. “Options.”
There might have been a triumphant little smirk on his face. Maybe. Probably. Definitely.
*** "Yep," Kenny shrugged before he started gathering up his things. "Let me know what they say," he grinned. "I'm curious what their answers will be." And either Nico will be happy or he'd be the one with the triumphant smile. He gave him a quick nod before heading off.
