"We like to give people a choice on whether or not they are bitten," she said. "It doesn't always work that way, but it is ideal. This is partly because a lot of people do die after being bitten. It's hard on the body. Not everyone's made for it."
She raised her hand as if looking at her nails, but one at a time, her claws appeared. She wasn't threatening him, but it was a good way to show her control.
"In time, those of us who survive - or are born that way - learn to control it. I can change completely if I wish, or just change certain parts of myself when necessary."
