Madge was glad that she hadn’t been affected by the recent weirdness. It was impossible (she thought?) for her to end up any older than she already was, since she was dead back home, and the last thing she wanted was to be younger. She didn’t want to think about who she’d been then. The world had moved on, District Twelve had been destroyed, and Madge wanted to look forward, not back.
It was the only way she could keep herself going.
She’d gone out to the store today after her work at the school, and picked up some groceries and some other essentials they needed. Exciting things like dishwashing soap, and toilet paper, and all of those things that she never thought were anything to think about until she’d had to provide them for herself. She’d never known that there were so many different varieties. This place had a glut of products for sale. She’d never seen such wealth before.
Coming inside, she closed the door behind her and put the bags down.
“Gale, are you home?”

“In here,” he called from the bedroom. He came out to meet her, though, and smiled when he saw her. The sight of her always made him smile. It was hard not to, when he thought about how she’d been nearly dead when she arrived in town, had died back home in Panem, and here she was beautiful, robust, and perfectly healthy.
“I’ll help you put the groceries away,” he told her. But first, a kiss. He caught her around the waist to pull her to him.

Madge squealed, but didn’t resist. She liked being held in his arms way too much to protest, and she liked his kisses even more. She let the kiss linger for a good while before she pulled back, smiling a little at him.
“I’d appreciate that.”
She turned to the bag with the frozen groceries and started unloading it first. It still never ceased to amaze her how easy and inexpensive food was to come by here.
“I’m still not pregnant yet,” she said finally. She was beginning to wonder if she ever would be.

“It’s going to happen,” Gale told her. He was sure of it. Madison Valley was their second chance. And what better way to show they appreciated it, than having a child? He never would have considered children back home, and Madge...well, she didn’t have much choice, since she was dead.
“We just have to be patient. Sometimes it takes a while,” he told her. He’d been reading up on fertility and what not. “I know it’s hard, but we just have to keep trying.”
