Boy...and girl...and their toys
Who: Luke and Amy
What: Talking about Earth guns

Luke waited for Amy to arrive at where they'd agreed to meet. He had been good with various types of guns for much of his life, because it was a necessity for life on Tattooine, but he was curious now if the firearms here were the same as what he'd used as a boy or not. He liked that, although he was unhappy being away from Mara and his family, he still could satisfy his love of exploring and learning new things. He did still hope that at some point, he could meet with his mother and show off what he'd learned. It seemed so normal...a kid wanting to show his mom what he could do...that it was easy to forget how extraordinary it was at times.

For now, he was ready to be a student for once, and learn.

Amy was a little disappointed that it seemed like Jake had been sent home. Even though things were a little awkward between them because of their mutual attraction, it had been nice having him around. It was possible he was still here and just blocking her messages for some reason, but she didn't think so. She'd have to bug Rosa to double check.

For the moment, she was happy to be distracted by teaching Luke Skywalker about modern day Earth guns and possibly learn about blasters in return. She wasn't nearly as much of a sci-fi nerd as Jake, but she was definitely familiar with the Star Wars movies. She was, however, determined to keep her cool and not act like a complete idiot.

"Hi, you must be Luke," she said when he entered the range. "I'm Amy."

Luke nodded, extending a hand to shake as she greeted him. "Yes, that's right. And you're Amy, right?" he said. "Nice to meet you in person." He offered a smile.

He did sense a little sadness coming from her, but as usual, he didn't do any probing-if she wanted to talk about it, perhaps she'd mention it. If nothing else, maybe this would at least cheer her up for a bit-she did seem glad to be meeting with him.

"Have you been exposed to any of our modern guns?" Amy asked. She wanted to know if she needed to start at the very beginning or if he at least had some working knowledge of the weapons. "The weapons you're used to largely rely on energy blasts, correct?"

That's what she seemed to remember from the movies, but she knew that there might be a lot more that wasn't portrayed in the films. There always seemed to be more to the story, which she supposed made sense given that the fictional versions of these worlds were only a snapshot.

	"Actually, I have been to a point, I think. Growing up, we had what we called slugthrowers" Luke replied. "Mostly, they were found on backwater planets like ours. They were still pretty useful, though. I think they're similar to what'd be called a rifle here." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

It was fascinating to hear things like that and Amy nodded. "I was thinking we'd start with something smaller," she said. "Just to let you get used to the feel of it. I'm not sure if energy weapons have the same kind of kickback as projectile weapons."

That was definitely something he would need to adjust for before trying a larger caliber firearm.

[note: I don't know much about weapons so I apologize if I get something totally wrong]

	Luke nodded. "That makes sense. Slugthrowers did use projectiles rather than energy, but still, I can't tell how different the ones used here will be." he said. Amy was itching to get her hands on a blaster so she could try one, but she figured that could wait. "First things first," she said. "We need to get you some eye and ear protection. They're required on the range." She moved behind the counter and pulled out earplugs and noise cancelling headphones.

"You can choose one or the other or use both," she said. "And you'll also need to wear these." She pushed a pair of safety glasses across the counter to him.

Luke nodded. "Good idea, just to be safe." he agreed. He would be more than able to deflect an errant projectile, but he still wasn't going to argue with the precautions.

He examined the goggles. "Ah, these are a little like the goggles on my flying helmet." he said, remembering his X-Wing days as he put on the items. "The helmet helped to dampen the sound, too...so I can understand why these things are needed here." He thought he'd be more used to the headphones, since they weren't entirely unlike a comm link set, so he put those on instead of the plugs.

It was a little difficult to verbally guide someone through how to load a weapon once they had their ear protection in place, but Amy led him onto the range and showed him how to insert the bullets into a clip. Once the clip was full, she demonstrated how it went into the gun.

"You do it," she said, nodding at the box of bullets and stack of clips in front of them.

Luke watched closely, and then followed what she said. The bullets looked something like the slugs from his old rifle, but he suspected the mechanism of the weapon was different. He couldn't hear well, as he'd expected, but he focused a little with the Force, making it a little easier to hear just while she was giving instructions. He loaded it just as she had, making sure he followed her directions exactly.

	"Good," Amy said with a grin as he easily followed her lead. "Now, you aim for the bullseye." She turned away from him and raised her gun, taking a moment to line up her shot before pulling the trigger. Her shot hit a little left of the center of the paper target that was hanging at the other end of the lane. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Luke nodded. He watched her shot, which hit a little to the left.

At this point, there really wasn't even conscious thought as he connected with the Force while making the shot. It was a natural part of him now, just like breathing or speaking. The shot hit the center.

"I should try it with my own ability...I don't even really think about things much...the Force is a natural part of who I am. But I want to try it like I did as a boy."

With the next shot, he concentrated on focusing and aiming, just the way he'd done as a kid. The shot still very close to the center, with just a slight deviation.

Luke nodded. "I agree...there's never any harm in practicing and keeping your skills sharp. There's always room for improvement." he said.

"As a boy, I had to be able to defend our farm...there were some dangerous native species on the planet, and even a sentient race that was usually rather hostile. I would simply try to drive them off if I could, but sometimes, there was no stopping the wildlife."
