It was probably really, really sad that Amaar’s idea of an exciting Saturday night these days was grocery shopping at Walmart. It wasn’t like he could go out to the local club or anything like that, though, he didn’t do that anymore, not since he’d become devout, and Walmart was a lot more exciting than grocery shopping in Mercy had ever been. The small town had been even smaller than here, but it evened out, he thought. In Mercy they could drive to Regina if they needed something they couldn’t find in town.
He found he didn’t really hate being here, though. It had a familiarity of a small town that was comforting to him, and he’d wound up working as a lawyer again, which, okay, he’d never been great at but at least it was something he knew how to do, and that helped too. Not having a community the way he always had back home was hard, especially when it came to prayers, which were usually more of a group activity, but he was making do.
Standing in an aisle, examining a can of beans, though, he was struck by just how hard it could be to be Muslim in a small town with a population of exactly him.
“How do you get pork by product in canned vegetables?” he wondered aloud looking at the ingredients list.
