WHO: Chloe Decker and Lucifer Morningstar
WHAT: She looks to him for help
WHEN: Recently
WHERE: The Iron Pepper
WARNINGS: Low
STATUS: Closed/Completed Gdoc
Chloe had been spending the past few weeks using her deductive detective skills to attempt to figure out what the heck was going on here. So far, she’d come up with absolutely nothing. Nothing made sense except the most ridiculous explanations; the ones that everyone repeated constantly but she just couldn’t get her head around.
The things she knew for sure were very few:
They were trapped in this town.
Some people had been here for over three years.
Nobody had figured out a way to escape.
Nobody knew what or who had done this.
So in other words, she knew absolutely nothing whatsoever.
Tonight after work, she’d waited around, wanting to talk to Lucifer when his shift ended. He certainly had his eccentricities, but he was also quite smart and maybe he’d have something to add to what little she’d already gathered.
So she got a bottled water and waited at the bar, reading the network as she did.
***
Lucifer didn’t care about the whys or hows of Madison Valley. He was just enjoying the reprieve from his Dad and annoying siblings. It helped that he could usually con a high roller every now and then to keep himself as close to the lifestyle he was used to as possible. Madison Valley certainly wasn’t on the same fiscal scale as Los Angeles, but there were benefits to be had.
He enjoyed playing and singing for the casino. He didn’t really care if anyone else listened or liked what they heard if they did. It was one of the few things he had left over from his days before dear old Dad got pissed at him. But he always noticed when a pretty lady was in his audience, so he smiled when he saw Decker come into the bar.
He chose a special song to end his set...just for her.
***
Chloe couldn’t help but roll her eyes a little. Sure, she enjoyed listening to him sing - he had some talent and she couldn’t deny that. But being serenaded was a little weird and she’d rather look annoyed than start blushing.
She finished her bottle of water, and when the song was over she walked over to the piano, leaning on it a little.
“You’re impossible, you know that?”
***
Lucifer watched her approach the piano as he took a drink from glass he had on the corner. He could tell by how she walked that he’d gotten under her skin with that. Now the real trick would be figuring out how much he had.
“Impossible?” he scoffed in mock offense. “Hardly, detective. Ask anyone. I’m quite easy.” Lucifer smirked. He loved turning everything she said into innuendo.
***
That earned him a much more dramatic eye roll. “Yes, I know you are.” She crossed her arms, wondering for a moment why she’d even bothered. He was as incorrigible as ever.
“Am I the only one who has ever said no to you?”
***
Lucifer pretended to think about that as he signalled a waitress for another drink. “Hmmm. No, afraid not.” Then he held up a finger. No, not that one. “Oh! Dad. He told me no once. Then he kicked me out, grounded me for a few millennia until I decided I didn’t want to be grounded anymore and here we are.”
He smiled at Chloe as he bounced his brows at her. Lucifer knew she wouldn’t believe him. She never did.
***
“Right. Uh huh.” She was getting rather tired of rolling her eyes, so she just crossed her eyes and looked at him boredly. He certainly was dedicated to his silly little story.
“Well, it looks like me and your father have something in common, then.”
***
Lucifer as he took another drink then set the glass on the piano. “Well, if you didn’t come here to finally give in to my many charms, why are you here?”
Lucifer could count on one hand how many actual friends he had that were female and still have fingers left to use on the rest. Decker was one of them. But he was who he was, and if they didn’t go through the usual hoops she might think there was something wrong with him.
***
“You know, I’m not really sure anymore. I should have known you were utterly incapable of adult conversation.” There was amusement in her voice, though. She wasn't about to give in to his supposed ‘charms’ but at least he was worth an exhausted laugh once in a while.
***
“Oh, now that’s unfair,” Lucifer protested with a childish pout on his face. “My conversations are quite adult. Definitely not family friendly.” He grinned at her with a wink.
“But seriously, detective. What’s on your mind?” He picked up his drink as he stood up from the piano then gestured to a nearby table.
***
She nodded and joined him at the table, taking a sip of her water.
“I’ve been trying to understand this place,” she said. “I’ve taken some notes and was hoping you might have something more to add.”
She pulled out her little notebook and scooted it across the table to him.
***
Ah. This. Of course she’d be trying to figure it out, but she might as well be trying to figure out the music of the planets. Lucifer smiled as he looked at the notebook, but didn’t open it up. Instead he took a drink.
“Detective,” he started. “I can add nothing to your investigation of the town, the dome or any of it.” He gave her a solid look. “Because I don’t want to know.”
***
Chloe exhaled in annoyance.
“How in the world can you not want to know? Don’t you want to get back to LA? To Lux? Maze? Your adoring throngs of groupies?” Yes, there might have been a little disgust in that last comment.
“I want to get back to Trixie. And my job.”
***
“No, I really don’t.” Lucifer rarely got annoyed with Chloe, but this time he stood up from the table, drink in hand, to pace away, a sure sign he was approaching frustration.
“Luz, Maze.” He glanced at Decker. “Trixie. They’ll all be there without even knowing we were gone if what I’m told is true. There are people here now that have gone home and come back.” He waved a hand in the general direction of the exit. “Go ask them.”
***
It was true, he didn’t usually get annoyed with her, and it left her a little perplexed. She sat back in her chair and watched him go.
“I thought you liked LA. The work we did together there.”
***
“I do,” he said as he leaned back against the piano. “I did. And if or when I go back then I will pick up right where we left off. But here…” A smile returned to Lucifer’s face as he looked around the room as if he were looking at heaven. “Here I don’t have my father or brothers trying to force me back into the family business. Maze isn’t lecturing me about who I am. Here I can just be,” he paused for a moment to look back to Chloe with that smile still on his face, “...me.”
***
Chloe watched him, that look of pure contentment on his face something that she wasn’t used to seeing. Maybe he was happier here than he was in LA. Who was she to judge?
“Well…” she sighed, grabbing her notebook and returning it to her pocket. “I’m glad you’re happy here. I really am.” But the truth was, Chloe wasn’t. She was frightened, overwhelmed, and missed her daughter.
***
Lucifer was happier here. When he’d quit Hell this was more what he had in mind. Unfortunately he got pestered at every turn until he’d been ready to revert to form and remind everyone why he’d been King of Hell. But that would have defeated the whole purpose of being on holiday.
“Decker,” Lucifer said with a sigh then walked back toward the detective. “I know you loathe not being in control of your surroundings and circumstances, but sometimes not being in control can be enlightening. You should try it some time.”
***
“I’d rather not, thanks,” she replied. She really wasn’t in the mood to lose control, not after turning up in a place like this. She needed to keep her grip and not lose it, or she was pretty sure she’d just collapse in ruin.
“But i’ll keep your suggestion in mind.”
As what not to do.
***
Lucifer knew what she meant. He’d known her long enough by now to have guessed. He also knew there was no point in trying to press the point. If he didn’t agree with her she was happier that way.
“Suit yourself,” Lucifer said. He toasted her with his glass before taking a drink then leaning on the piano. “I’ll be here when you are done beating your head against a wall.”
