It was a little after two when Sirius drug himself out of bed. He’d been out drinking half the night, then he’d gone home with some girl whose name he couldn’t remember. He’d finally dragged himself home just before dawn and crashed in his clothes.
Now he was starving, and he stumbled into the kitchen, opening the fridge and rummaging around. Not finding what he wanted, he found Lily in the living room.
“You’re out of roast beef, Lils.”
***
Lily was used to Sirius’s shenanigans and she couldn’t even make herself be angry with him when he came home at all hours, smelling like booze and sex. Being in Madison Valley was better than him wasting away in Azkaban and she wouldn’t begrudge him the opportunity to enjoy himself while he was here.
At least he wasn’t bringing his never ending parade of lady friends home.
“I’ll be shopping today,” she said. “Add it to the list on the fridge. And anything else you need.”
***
“Cool,” he said, collapsing inelegantly in a chair in the living room, sprawling as he nibbled on the bread, cheese and mayo that he’d prepared for his sandwich.
“How are you, Lily? I mean, really? James treating you well, or do I need to kick his ass?”
***
“James always treats me well, Sirius,” she said, rolling her eyes a little at the question as she set her book down and gave him her full attention. “We’re enjoying the time we have here with Harry.”
And idly considering giving their son a younger sibling. A sister, if that glimpse into their potential future was accurate, but she didn’t share that yet. They hadn’t made a decision.
***
Sirius had expected that answer, or he wouldn’t have asked the question. James was his best friend, and he’d better damned well be treating his woman right.
“Yeah,” he said, his voice breaking. “I’m glad you have that here.”
It was his fault, of course, that they didn’t back home.
***
It was absolutely not his fault and Lily wouldn’t hesitate to remind him of that as many times as she needed to in order to get it through his thick skull. “And I’m happy you’re here to share it with us,” she said. “James is much happier with you around.”
Some women might be jealous that their husband had such a close relationship with his best mate, but Lily knew what she was getting into when she married James.
***
“Yeah, well, he’s closer to me than my own brother.” Regulus had hated him, just like the rest of his family had. But he and James had something special. A bond that wasn’t seen all that often. Had he been jealous of Lily? Maybe a little. But he’d never admit it to her.
“And plus, I’m me. Who wouldn’t be happier with me around?”
***
Lily chuckled. Neither Sirius nor James was even remotely modest. Sometimes she wondered how they managed to get along without their egos conflicting. “I am also very glad that Harry will get to know his godfather,” she said. Especially since Hestia was gone.
“Have you gotten to know Hermione at all yet?” she asked. “She’s brilliant. One of Harry’s best mates from Hogwarts.”
***
“I’ve talked to her on the network but no, I haven’t really met her.” It was a bit awkward, because she was kind of hot too. And not that much younger than he was at this point in time.
“That’ll be weird for her, to see Harry grow up.”
***
Even if Hermione wasn’t perfectly happy with Oz, there was no way that Lily would let Sirius make a move on her. She knew all too well how he treated women and Hermione deserved far better. “She’s so good with him though,” Lily said. “She entertains him with stories about their years at Hogwarts. Which is also nice for me and James.”
Since this version of Harry would never get to attend Hogwarts presumably. They would have to cobble together his magical education themselves. Which was worth it for them to have a chance to see him grow up.
***
Sirius would take offense at that, thank you very much! Sure, he wasn’t looking for a relationship, but he wasn’t the kind of man who took advantage of women. Sirius’s girls knew what they were getting into from the beginning and he always made sure that they left very satisfied.
“Yeah,” he said, a bit gruffly. “It must be nice for you to know how awesome he was at Hogwarts. Because no doubt he did both of you proud.”
***
“It makes me sad knowing that he had to take up our war,” Lily admitted. She didn’t regret for a moment making the ultimate sacrifice to protect her son, but she wished that he could have lived a happy and war-free life. Still, she was very proud of the things that she’d learned about his future.
She glanced over at Sirius. “Were you here when our granddaughter was in town?” she asked. “It was delightful meeting her.”
***
“I don’t remember,” he said. The first few months he’d been there he’d been drunk and bedhopping and didn’t remember much more than that.
“Was she awesome?” Sirius had no doubt that she would be. Everyone related to James was automatically awesome.
***
Lily laughed. “Of course she was. She was my namesake.” Which probably had exactly nothing to do with how awesome Lily Luna was, but one couldn’t be married to James Potter for as long as Lily had been without picking up a bit of his bravado.
“One of her brothers was called James Sirius,” she added, figuring he would like hearing that.
***
Sirius did like hearing that. It touched something deep inside his heart that Harry would go to the trouble of naming one of his kids after him.
He blew it off with Bravado, though, as he wasn’t exactly great with emotions.
“Well, if you want to give a kid an awesome name then that’s definitely the way to go.”
***
That was pretty much the response Lily was expecting. She knew that Sirius loved her son almost as much as she and James did and was grateful to know that he would be there for Harry in the future when they couldn’t be.
“I suppose I ought to get ready to go shopping,” she said. “Make sure you let me know what else we need.”
***
“I’ve got a list,” he grinned. He always made a super long list with all the alcohol and snacks he wanted on it. He didn’t expect Lily to get all of it, but he always hoped for as much of it as he could get. It was always amusing to see how much she’d actually buy for him.
He pulled his list out of his pocket and handed it to her.
“Thanks, by the way.”
***
Lily rolled her eyes at the length of his list. She definitely wasn’t going to buy him everything on it. For one thing, he didn’t need that much alcohol. For another, she expected him to eat some food that was moderately healthy from time to time.
