Ayana sat on the grass at the edge of the park, where the trees and town met. Brax was curled up against her hip, the wolf snoring faintly. He was her constant companion, and despite many attempts in her life to get him to leave, he never left. Here was no different. She was comforted by the fact. He was familiar in a way this place could never be. Long fingers laced through the thick fur of his scruff and soothed her worries. This place wasn't awful - full of strange things and beings, but not awful. No one wanted to sell her to produce children for others, so for her, it was a good place overall. She leaned forward, lifting her hand from his neck, resting her chin it both hands. we are strong, and proud, and beautiful and there are not enough stars in the night sky to measure our worth, she repeated in her head, a line she often repeated back home.
In this place it was easy to forget how hard she'd struggled to survive.
This place was heaven in comparison, but she wasn't happy either. She missed her friend, and even her family that she knew must be dead. But she missed them nonetheless. Her fingers left her face and strayed back to Brax even as his hackles raised a hair, causing her to look up to see who approached. He was a good wolf, though, and didn't move. Just lay there and stared.
