So far, her pregnancy was going very well. Mary hadn't had a lot of morning sickness and was generally in good health and spirits. Most of all, she was happy. Having another child, one that would allow Ichabod to be a father finally, was a wonderful feeling.
That night when she pulled on her nightgown and stood in front of the mirror, she noticed for the first time that there was a definite roundness to her stomach, much more obviously than there was before. Mary put her hand on it and then returned to the bedroom to show Ichabod.
"Look," she said with a smile, sweeping her hand down to the bottom of her stomach so that Ichabod could see how it had grown.
