"I'm glad she's here with you," he said. It seemed like the right thing to say. Parents usually seemed to like their kids, so it made sense that they'd want them with them. He guessed.
"No, I guess it wouldn't. Military careers and childrearing don't mix so well." There was a bit of sympathy in his words - he wasn't a total jerk.
As they got closer to the clinic, he pulled away from her.
"I can make it from here."
Somehow it seemed more manly to hobble in on his own than let a woman half carry him inside.
