Still unbothered by everything that had been going on lately, he’d tied an extra knife beneath his sleeve, slid one into his boot, Briar was focusing on the change of the seasons. Spring was on them now, and that meant work. Even if it wasn’t really work the way most people understood it. He spend most of his free time tending his garden behind the house, pulling weeds and clipping, replanting as needed, but he’d done so well with it last year there wasn’t much to do with upkeep. Which wound up sending him out into the rest of town, checking on potted plants outside buildings and, as today’s case was, stopping by a raggedy looking rosebush by the side of the road.
It was in poor shape, reaching with his magic he could feel it struggling. It had grown poorly, too much of it asking for too few resources, and there was nothing anyone could do to make it live the way it wanted to.
Crouching beside it, Briar just huffed a sigh and with a flick of magic loosened the twine holding his knife in place to drop it into his hand, a graceful twirl setting it right as he set to work sawing off the plant’s branches. “What d’you think you’re doing trying to grow like that?” he chastised, not thinking to wonder if anyone might be nearby. “You ain’t going to make it through summer if you keep this up.”
