STATUS: Closed/Completed Gdoc
Since Nick had left, Bobbi hadn’t been enjoying Madison Valley nearly as much as she once had. And it wasn’t even just that she wasn’t getting laid anymore...she missed his company in a real and profound way. She wasn’t going to say the words out loud, but she was pretty sure that she’d been falling in love with him. And then Madison Valley had decided to add to her list of failed relationships, and he’d disappeared, leaving no trace behind. Like he’d never been here at all.
Her tentative, uneasy truce with Cassie didn’t make up for the fact that she’d lost her boyfriend who she’d come to care for far, far more than she wanted to admit.
The gym was the best place to work out those feelings, at least if you were Bobbi. Wearing workout clothes, her blonde hair pulled back in a tight ponytail, she was fighting with the punching bag viciously and without restraint. She had far better form than most of the women here just to lose a few pounds - she was obviously trained, and trained well.
***
The gym wasn’t Izzy’s favourite place to work out, she loved the obstacle course but it did tend to get a little busy on bright days so the gym was a good alternative. She’d been a little sad when the kids disappeared, she loved having Max around even if he had been older this time round. But she never stayed down for too long.
She noticed the woman kicking the crap out of the punching bag, her form was good, she’d obviously had formal training. There were a number of people around here like that, perhaps she was part of the organisation Johnny’s face twin was part of, she felt like there was a lot of them and she saw most of them either at the gym or obstacle course. Their training was different from hers but interesting.
“Rough day?” she asked with a friendly smile as she moved to stretch on the mat near the punching equipment.
***
“Rough month,” Bobbi said, as she spared a brief glance for the girl doing her stretches. “And no, it doesn’t have anything to do with the kids.”
She hadn’t had any arrive, and was glad about it. She was equally annoyed to hear so many people complaining about their disappearance. Bobbi didn’t have much of a maternal instinct.
She stopped, wiping her hand across her sweaty forehead.
“I’m Bobbi. Don’t think we’ve met.”
***
“Well that makes a change, pretty much everything is about them at the moment” Izzy replied with a little smile. It was certainly a sign things were getting back to normal that other problems were on peoples minds.
“Izzy” she offered in return, “So I’m guessing you’re part of the superhero group right? Do you have a codename too?” It definitely seemed to be a thing with Captain America, the Hulk, Iron Man and all the others. And Izzy couldn’t deny she was intrigued.
***
“I guess I am,” Bobbi said. “I was one of Phil Coulson’s team, but I’m not anymore.” She’d taken one for the team and she didn't regret if, but she did miss being a part of them. She missed it a lot.
“Codename?” She raised an eyebrow. “Mockingbird. But trust me, I’m nowhere near in the level of the others. I’m just a spy.” And a good one.
***
“Oh, okay” Izzy nodded, glad she’d been correct though she couldn’t help but wonder what she meant by the ‘not anymore’ comment. But she didn’t ask, it may be something Bobbi didn’t want to talk about.
“Just nothing, being a spy is just as cool” Izzy said, “My boyfriend has a codename too, he’s called the Human Torch where he’s from. I’m just Izzy, no nicknames for us” she grinned. She did think they were fun though.
***’
It was something that hurt, that was for sure. She’d taken a metaphorical bullet for her team, and she didn’t regret it, but that didn’t mean that she didn’t miss them desperately. She did. And the fact that they mostly included her here really meant a lot to her.
“Human torch? He has fire powers?” Why else would he be called that, after all? “Is he an inhuman?”
***
Izzy couldn’t imagine not being part of her team, but then they were her family. Whatever happened they were in it together, even when Jace did go off and do something stupid they were still all behind him trying to help.
“He does. Burns hotter than the sun when he turns the flames on” Izzy grinned, even now she loved Johnny’s ability. “I’m not sure about that but he is amazing”
***
Bobbi could tell how much she cared for this guy, and it was rather charming. She’d never had that much luck with love herself, but whatever. She was mature enough to be happy for someone else when it came down to it.
“Inhumans are people in our world who have powers. And usually some small bit of alien blood.” Or at least that was how it used to be. Things were getting a bit out of control now.
***
Izzy had never ever imagined herself as someone who would smile simply at the thought of a guy but Johnny had changed that about her. They’d both had an effect on each other which neither of them had expected but both now accepted.
“He definitely has powers but he’s never mentioned any aliens” Izzy replied, “I’ll ask him though, who knows maybe there is a connection”
***
Bobbi didn’t know if there was or not; it really didn’t matter much. People in this place were from all sorts of different worlds; maybe super powers were normal in his.
“What do you do back home?” Enough about her boyfriend, she wanted to know more about Isabelle herself.
***
“I’m a shadowhunter” Izzy said, “In my world shadowhunters born with angelic blood which is the reason we can handle the runes" she pointed to her 'tattoos', "They increase our strength, speed, stamina, whatever we need so that we can protect mundanes - normal humans - from the shadow world - vampires, warlocks, demons and whatever else needs stopping. So that’s kind of my job I guess. I’ve trained since I was born and it’s all I’d ever known before coming here”
***
“Wow, so like...supernatural hunters.” Before coming here Bobbi would have thought she was pretty much insane. Yeah, there was crazy stuff in the world to be sure. She’d seen plenty of it. But werewolves and vampires and things like that were myths.
In her world.
Not here.
“That's pretty cool,” she said with a nod. “I guess that’s something that you’re born into?”
***
“Yeah pretty much” Izzy said, she knew it must sound crazy to those who would have been mundanes in her world. This was why they kept their work a secret, most people wouldn’t believe or understand.
“It is” she nodded, “It’s all I’d ever really known until I came here. Getting a job had certainly never happened before” Not that Izzy minded working, it was definitely different.
***
Bobbi wasn’t exactly a mundane. Sure, she was completely human and didn’t have any powers of her own that she hadn’t worked her ass off for, but that didn’t meant that she was entirely clueless that there was more out there. In fact, she knew that there was. She’d seen it and fought it.
“So that makes it a pretty closed club, I guess? If you’re all born that way and have a vow of secrecy?”
***
Izzy got that here people were more aware of the supernatural than they would have been back in her world. It was less about being clueless to her and more just about protecting those who didn’t know the truth.
“Yeah, it’s mostly the same shadowhunter families, normal people can’t handle the runes so we can’t replenish our ranks as it were” she explained.
***
“So does that mean you’re eventually going to die out?”
It was a rather blunt way to put it, but it was also the truth. Insular societies like that didn’t often last long - and for exactly that reason.
“Or maybe you could just have more kids or something? What happens if normal people try to take your runes?”
***
“Hopefully not” Izzy replied with a smile, “I’ve heard from others that in the future we’re able to create new shadowhunters from mundanes with potential so maybe that will save us”
She gave a small wincing smile, “They go mad, it’s a terrible process if you aren’t able to accept the runes. It’s not pretty from what I’ve heard”
***
“With potential?” Bobby wasn’t sure what that meant, but she shrugged it off. “I hope it works out for you. It sounds like you’re doing a good thing.”
She cringed.
“Madness...is absolutely not cool. How do you know if a human can accept runes or not?”
***
“Yeah like some mundanes are born with abilities most people don’t have like the sight or those who are children of shadowhunters who have left the fold” Izzy explained, as much as she was able anyway since this was all new to her too. The point she had come from the Academy hadn’t been used in years.
“Generally a normal human wouldn’t ever have a rune applied. There has to be something about them which shows they have potential to accept it. Some link to a shadowhunter family or downworlder. It’s too dangerous to try on any random person, if they don’t go mad they’d probably die”
***
“Yeah, wow,” Bobbi said, shaking her head a bit. That sounded crazy, and definitely not something that she’d want to go through. Madness possibly ending in death didn’t sound like a walk in the park.
She shook her head. In Madison Valley, it seemed that you learned something new and strange every day.
“I’ve gotta head off, but it was nice meeting you. Thanks for answering all my, er, somewhat prying questions.”
She grinned.
***
Until she’d gone into more detail Izzy didn’t realise quite how awful it could sound, it had never appeared that way to her. But then it was her life. It was readily accepted that the law was the law. Madison had changed all that simply because of the nature of the place.
“Anytime. Enjoy the rest of your day” she said easily finishing her stretches so she could begin her routine.
