The weapons clanged as Kira and Reyna struck at each other again, their breaths visible in the crisp morning air. This was shaping up to be a good workout. Reyna loved her training sessions with Jason, but with him, she knew everything he was going to do before he was going to do it, just as he did with her; they knew each other and their styles too well. And with Percy...well, she could suggest they train with swords and they’d end up in a snowball fight. Kira was that great mix of discipline and unpredictability, which made her a good training partner. When they broke apart to catch their breath, Reyna went to grab her water. The cold drink was refreshing on her heated body. “Have you been practicing on your own?” *** Kira had practiced a lot by herself, but now that she had Reyna had regularly been sparring with weapons, she much preferred that. It was much more interesting practicing with someone else, and much more challenging. Reyna was definitely the right person to be sparring with as far as Kira was concerned. "Sometimes, yeah," she replied, also reaching for a bottle of water. "I try to get out here every day if I can." She didn't care what the weather was like. Once she was in her zone, she didn't notice if it was too cold or hot or if it was raining. She was definitely more disciplined than she was when she first discovered her gift. "Definitely better training with a partner, though." *** “Yeah,” Reyna agreed. “Sorry I had to skip a week. I had…” She paused, realizing how ridiculous it sounded when it just had to be said. But Kira had been here for a while. She'd seen the craziness the dome brought. “I had a future kid show up.” *** Kira just kind of smiled at that. It was to show a certain solidarity that only Madison Valley refugees understood. "That's alright. You had a good reason," she said. "I had one show up, too. Well, she was here last time. Anyway, I understand." She wouldn't have made it here last week either. *** “The kid who showed up for me last time didn’t come this time,” Reyna said, confused. “It was someone else. The weird thing is, I wasn’t with the father of either kid both times.” There was a time, once, when she thought she and Magnus might have become something more, but then he’d left, and now she was with Percy. That didn’t explain having a kid with Jason now, though. *** Kira knew all about that. She sometimes thought about the little girl who belonged to her and Tobias. There was never a chance of that being more than friendship, so that was a little weird. "The dome does whatever it wants, it seems," she said, shaking her head. "I only had one show up this time, but she belongs to me and Scott. I had kids show up in the past who had dads I wasn't involved with, though." It happened. Too bad they could never predict these things. "Next time we have kids show up, we should introduce them all." She was sure Kendra would have liked Reyna. *** “We should,” Reyna agreed. “I could’ve used some help on dealing with my kid. Not that he was bad or anything. He was...scarily perfect. And disciplined. I don’t think either Jason or I were anywhere as put-together as he was.” *** "I can see how that would be disconcerting," Kira said. "Most of my kids that show up are really hyper, like a sugar rush twenty-four seven." That was probably slightly exaggerated, but it did come from a place of truth. *** Reyna smiled slightly. Kira was fairly serious and grounded, but she could see how she could’ve been an energetic child when she’d been younger. She wouldn’t be surprised if Kira’s future kids would be the same. “I think most kids are. But Alex...it doesn’t seem unnatural on him, if that makes sense. Like he was born into maturity and leadership.” Not surprising, given who his father was. Although even Jason had his moments of teenage idiocy. *** "Yeah. That's why I'm usually glad when they go back." Kira did think she'd want to a mom someday, and Kendra was an adorable and good kid. She wasn't ready at this point in her life for kids, especially hyper ones who needed constant attention. "That sounds like a possibility for a kid who is born into the supernatural world," she said, referring to the maturity of Reyna's kid. "Especially a world like where you're from." A society like that seemed to be a great place to learn leadership. *** “Plus, he has Jason Grace for a father,” Reyna said wryly. She didn't feel the same sense of sadness and regret that she used to when she thought of Jason and their lost opportunity. It was much easier to be his friend again when she knew they weren't right for each other - which made it so weird that their kid would show up. “You've met Jason, right?” *** "I don't think I have," Kira said honestly. "I know of him, though, just from seeing him around the network." She thought she'd seen him on there, but she never did introduce herself. "I'm going to have to now." She was curious now. *** “I think you'll like him,” Reyna said. “He's a good person.” And he expected everyone else to be just as good, which was a laudable wish but not entirely realistic, unfortunately. “I'll bring him next time we train.” *** “I’d really like that,” Kira said sincerely. She figured any friend of Reyna’s was worth knowing. She considered Reyna a good friend and she trusted her judgment. It was more the same here. |
