Sara came to consciousness in stages. The first thing she was aware of was that her head was pounding. It certainly wasn’t the first time she woke up with a headache, but she couldn’t remember what caused this one. Had she had too much to drink last night? Had a sparring accident with someone? None of those seemed right and the more she tried to think about it, the more her head hurt.
As she shifted her position, she became aware that she was bound. Okay then. There was no way that this was a sex game gone awry, so apparently the headache was from something sinister. Great. She couldn’t lift her hand up to see if she was bleeding and she couldn’t move her legs, which were starting to cramp from the position she was in.
When she finally forced herself to open her eyes, there were no visual clues to her whereabouts. It smelled dank and musty, like a basement, and there was no light filtering in, so she could only assume that she’d been kidnapped for some reason. Why? She had no clue, but it certainly wasn’t the first time. All she had to do was wait to get her strength back so she could escape.
***
Methos had checked on Sara occasionally but she’d remained unconscious. He was starting to think he’d hit her too hard when he knocked her out but finally this time when he opened the door she was stirring.
She was being kept in a root cellar portion of a basement so there was no light until he opened the door then the dim light from the tiny windows near the ceiling of the basement filtered into the room enough she’d see his outline as he came in so he could check on her. The house was abandoned so there was no electricity and he wouldn’t think of using it anyway.
Once he was inside he grabbed her by the chin to lift her face and see if she was still dazed from the blow she’d taken.
***
As soon as she saw Methos, Sara remembered running into him in the alley outside of Verdant. She had no idea why he’d knocked her out and brought her here though. Wherever here was. “What the hell?” she demanded, forgetting momentarily that he probably wouldn’t understand her. No matter, her tone made it clear that she was pissed.
“You’re going to regret this,” she added. Not only was she more than capable of taking care of herself, but there were probably a lot of people looking for her. Assuming that anyone noticed she was missing.
***
Her tone and her expression said very clearly she was pissed off. Methos had faced down entire peoples who were angry and shouting for the blood of he and his brothers but he was still here so he smiled mockingly at her.
”You might as well settle down and learn your place cow.” Breaking the defiant ones could be the best amusement but he wasn’t sure he had time for that.
***
It would take an awful lot to break someone like Sara who had gone through training with the League of Assassins twice. She certainly wasn’t going to make it easy for him. At the moment, she wasn’t struggling against her bonds though. There was no point in expending the energy to try and escape yet. She needed to regain her strength before that. And maybe he’d end up untying her or making another mistake.
“Let me go now and we can forget all about this,” she said. Maybe he did understand English and was just refusing to speak it for some reason.
***
If he did understand it he was a great actor since he showed no reaction to anything she said. If he knew how hard of a subject she would be to break he would probably cut his losses and kill her now. Methos didn’t need the dead weight at the moment.
For now he was checking all of her bindings to make sure she wasn’t going to get out easily if she managed it. They seemed secure but he would have to test out how she acted if he let her loose at some point if he was going to use her.
”This is taking too much time, where is Kronos, Silas and Caspian.” He didn’t expect her to answer.
***
Okay, then, probably not so much with the understanding English. And since Sara didn’t understand whatever language he was speaking, they were probably at an impasse. One of the words he said sounded almost familiar, but she couldn’t place it. Maybe if her head stopped throbbing, she could figure it out.
She smiled. “Sorry, can’t answer your questions if I can’t understand you.” Only the inflection in his tone at the end clued her in that he was asking a question.
***
Methos turned his attention to her face and watched her intently for a moment. Then he snorted, and stood up to brush his hands off. She could stay here while he was out trying to learn some things about this place he’d found himself. The headache and the bindings should keep her in one place for now.
He’d see how she’d do after more time without water and being tied in place.
Satisfied he turned to leave the room and lock her back in.
***
Sara let out a frustrated noise when he left her again. It would be a lot easier to figure out a game plan if she knew why he’d grabbed her. For now, she was going to rest and hope that her headache would dissipate before he returned.
***
Methos wasn’t back for a few hours but when he came in he went to her little room and crouched down to start undoing the bindings. He wanted to see if she was going to cooperate or not and the only way he could do that was to let her loose and try to direct her.
Which would still be easier if they spoke the same language but he’d manage.
***
After sleeping for a couple more hours, Sara was biding her time and waiting for him to return. The pain her head had subsided to a dull ache and, despite not having food or drink for some time, she was in the best possible condition to fight back and try to escape. The longer she went without sustenance, the more difficult that would become.
She sat quietly, not moving a muscle when he came in and started to untie her. This was exactly the opportunity she was waiting for.
***
Methos was being careful he just didn’t know what he was dealing with in Sara. He undid one hand and one foot to start so she would have a harder time undoing anything or hitting him. He stopped and he looked at her intently again. ”It is in your interest to behave. Not that you understand.”
Then he reached out to tie a new rope around her neck so he could use it to control her after he undid her other hand and foot.
***
He was clever. If Sara wasn’t so annoyed, she would be impressed. Still, she bided her time. The rope around her neck wasn’t as much of a concern as having her limbs tied. She was an excellent fighter and was confident that she could overpower him before he was able to fight back.
Being in the League taught her patience. It wasn’t a virtue that came easily to her, but she knew when she needed to exercise it.
***
He did tend to annoy people no matter what guise they knew him in. At least some things didn’t change. Finally he undid her last arm and leg and nodded to her to get onto her feet. He had a firm grip on the rope but he was within reach used to being able to overpower almost any woman he came across.
***
It took a few moments for Sara to get her balance when she staggered to her feet. The sensation of pins and needles shot up and down her legs once she started moving them. Once she felt steady, she took in a deep breath while she readied herself to attack.
She waited until Methos looked away to make her move. One leg shot out, aiming to sweep his legs out from under him even as she aimed a punch at his jaw.
***
He managed to get his arm up to partially block the punch just because he was starting to turn back toward her. It wasn’t enough to save him from being rattled and having his legs taken out from under him. Methos rolled away from her and yanked on the rope. His healing and the quickening that fueled him gave him a faster recovery than he should have had.
***
Sara wasn’t expecting him to recover so quickly from her attack and she was pulled off balance when he yanked on the rope. Her hands immediately went to her neck to try and dislodge it even as she continued her attack, following as he rolled and kicking at his stomach, hoping to get him to loosen his grip on the rope.
***
She got in a solid kick making him grunt and cough but he wasn’t letting go of the rope. Methos yanked on it again while reaching to pull the butcher knife out of his belt. He was getting very pissed off at this but it sent him icy cold in actions instead of careless. And he finally got a good breath in after that kick so after the yank on the rope he swiped at her with the knife.
****
His second yank on the rope managed to knock her completely off her feet and she hit the ground hard, gasping for breath. She only just barely managed to dodge out of the way of his knife attack and the tip grazed her skin. “Fuck,” she swore, struggling to roll into a position where she could fight back.
***
Methos had the feeling if she hadn’t been weak from the hit to the head and being tied up this would be an even worse fight. He was starting to rethink keeping her. She’d evaded the knife but she was on the ground so he returned the favor of the kick, aiming for her midsection to try to knock the wind out of her.
***
Unfortunately for Sara, she was still a little weaker from being knocked out and his kick landed hard. She made a little “oof” sound and instinctively curled up into the fetal position to protect herself from further attack.
***
As soon as she curled up Methos rolled onto his knees and grabbed her to hold her down and tie her back up before she could get any more hits in. He was swearing in an ancient language while he did it but the tone made it very clear what kind of things he was saying even if she couldn’t understand it. There was the temptation to slam her head against the floor to make her unconscious again but as long as he was able to get her under control again he didn’t want to permanently damage her.
Yet.
***’
Sara considered her options. If he got her tied up again, it would be even harder to fight back later, but on the flipside, if he managed to knock her out again, that could make things even worse. Since she was still having trouble catching her breath, she opted to stop fighting for now. There would be more opportunities later. She was sure of it.
***
Since she wasn’t struggling it didn’t take long to restrain Sara again. Since the rope was tied around her neck he’d used it on her arms and hands as well so she would have more trouble removing or escaping anything. Then he grabbed her by her long hair to haul her back to her feet so he could throw her back into confinement.
Once he had her back where she started he would restrain her legs again as well. He’d had enough being kicked for the day.
