Jack didn't hate school. He hated sitting in a classroom. Sitting for long periods made his hinges tight. He had to waste the time between classes going into the bathroom to oil his elbow and his knees. He was almost always late to class because oiling his metal parts wasn't something he could do quickly.
He decided he needed a break from the routine, and made the choice to skip school on Friday. He headed to the park, despite the early morning chill, and found a bench where he could sit. He carried his backpack, with his school books inside, so he could study. He wasn't really trying to get out of doing the work, he just hated the routine of going to school, and sitting for so much of the day.
He groaned when his math textbook slid off his lap. Metal legs were not as functional as flesh and blood for a number of reasons.
