During all the weirdness that was the previous week, someone had delivered a small package to Santana’s apartment. The only thing weirder was that it was addressed to Johanna. It wasn’t anything new. People would sometimes mistake one for the other and in an alternate world, Santana and Johanna would be dominating the world and making it their own. But this was Madison Valley which sorely lacked in a need of domination so they cornered their own niches. And since they were on good terms and friendly, Santana figured she’d bring the package to its rightful owner, mostly to see what was inside. Santana knew where Johanna lived from past conversations and headed there after she had finished with her college classes in the morning. Work was later and she knew she could make the delivery plus sneak a nap in before her shift. She found herself at the door and knocked. “Delivery for one of the most beautiful ladies in Madison” she said in a sing-song voice. *** Katniss was the only person home when the knock came and she was on her way to opening it when she heard a voice calling out. The voice was very familiar and she wasn’t surprised to see Johanna’s doppelganger on the other side. “Hi,” she said, clearly amused by Santana’s declaration. “Johanna’s not home, but you can come in.” Ever since Valentine’s Day, she was in a happy mood and feeling a lot more social and outgoing than she ever had before. She was grateful that she and Ash hadn’t been caught up in the latest bit of craziness. *** “Katniss” Santana said, surprised but she recovered quickly enough. “You know, you’re pretty hot too” she said with a wink. Santana had always kept her options open and you never knew when the right lady would find their way. She shook her head from the thought that as running through her mind. “So, I got this delivery for Johanna even though I’m clearly not her” she said with a stupid grin. “Figured I’d bring it by, but now I’m not going to find out what’s in the box. Just like everyone who watched that movie about the serial killer and the box” Santana said, waving her hand at the box. “So, what’s kickin?” *** “Thanks,” Katniss said. She wasn’t entirely sure what to make of the compliment, but she figured there was no harm in thanking the other girl. If she wasn’t with Ash, she might be willing to consider dating a woman, but she was, so it was a moot point. She took the box and set it on the small table in the hallway where they left mail. “I have no idea what movie that is,” she admitted. “Is it something I should watch?” *** “If you like dramatic thrillers with some pretty messed up stuff, then sure. Otherwise, steer clear for something more happy” Santana said. “So, you fall under the power of love - or not love - as the case was a few days ago?” she asked, curious. She didn’t know too much about Katniss, so it was always interesting sussing the basic relationships out of people. *** That didn’t sound like something Katniss would enjoy. She’d already lived through plenty of drama and messed up stuff. It wasn’t entertaining to her. “I think I’ll pass then,” she said. “And, no, I was luckily not involved. Ash and I had a nice Valentine’s Day together.” She was grateful for that. It took her long enough to be ready for that kind of step and the idea of the dome rushing them into something they weren’t ready for was unpleasant. “How about you?” *** “That’s nice, having a good Valentine’s Day” Santana said, wondering if it would be rude to look in their fridge and deciding against it. “I’m safe, or was - me and Q had a good, non-crazy Valentine’s Day, which means that something is bound to come up the next time something crazy happens. I can only imagine what that could be” she said. “So” she said, pausing and eyeing Katniss “Do you like it here? In Madison?” she asked curiously. *** “Oh, I love it here,” Katniss said. “I don’t know how much you know about Panem, but it’s not a good place. At all. Being here is so much better.” There was no violence, everyone had enough to eat, and her sister was alive here. Those were all amazing things and the fact that she also met Ash and had other friends was a significant bonus. She leaned forward a little, curious to know more about Santana. “Who’s Q?” she asked. “And I’ve given up on trying to even guess what this place might do next.” *** “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Panem” Santana said frankly, shrugging her shoulders. “Q” she said. “Oh, Quinn, my fiancee” she added. “She and I are from the same place, though a bit different in the whole timeline thing. Used to be frenemies, but better friends than enemies kind of thing and then it transformed into more” she said with a grin. “I don’t give up, but I try to plan for things. Like if dinosaurs or zombies show up, I’m totally ready. Well, maybe for the zombies” she added. *** Katniss was a little surprised that Johanna had never told her facetwin about their lives back home. Then again, it wasn’t really something any of them liked to talk about. “Oh, congratulations,” she said at the fiancee explanation. “Panem is a terrible place,” she said. “Johanna and I were both forced to fight in something called the Hunger Games against twenty-three other young people. Last person alive wins.” And winning wasn’t exactly a great thing either with what was expected of the victors. *** Santana’s mouth dropped open. She thought she had heard stories or mentions of things amongst the talk of aliens and vampires and all that myth turned reality stuff, but hearing it straight on was a shock. “What the ever loving fuck?” she said, more as a statement rather than question. “You’re shitting me, right? Wait” she said, her mind thinking. “Does that mean you’re dead? Or Johanna is? Or did something more fucked up happen?” she asked. “Girl, I am glad you and her are here and not back there” she said, almost wanting to hug her. *** “No, we were in the Games at different times,” Katniss said. “We both won ours. Well, then we ended up in a second time together which is how we met. But no one won that time because there was a secret resistance that broke us out.” There were a lot of details she was leaving out, but that seemed to be the most pertinent information. She was used to people reacting like Santana was when they heard about her home world. *** Santana shook her head. Compared to that place, Lima seemed like a slice of Heaven. “Damn. You both won?” she said. Katniss didn’t look like much and Johanna, looked like her. She flexed her arm just to wonder how powerful Johanna could possibly be. “Well, I’m glad you two got sprung, because that just sounds worse than anything I could ever think of, and I can think of some pretty bad stuff” she said. Nothing too harsh of course, just enough to break someone if she had wanted to back in high school. “You know, if you ever want to talk about that life, though I doubt you would, I know you got Johanna but if you need a reactionary ear or face, I’m down. As long as there are drinks too” she said. *** The offer caught Katniss off guard, but she definitely appreciate it. “Thank you,” she said. “I will let you know if I need to talk to someone.” It was highly unlikely that she ever would take Santana up on the offer, but it was nice knowing there were people there for her. “Speaking of drinks, can I get you something?” she asked. “Or do you need to get going?” *** “I need to roll” Santana said. “I’ve got a bed calling my name since I work tonight. Figured I’d get a few hours of sleep in before I head in” she said. “But drinks in the future is something I’m down for. We can keep that on the table.” *** Katniss stood up so she could see Santana out. “Sounds good,” she said. Drinking wasn’t really something that she indulged in regularly, or really ever, but maybe it wouldn’t be a bad thing to get out of her comfort zone now and again. “Have a good night at work. And thanks for dropping this off. I’ll make sure Johanna gets it.” *** |
