Since Rosa wasn't really good at anything outside an interrogation either, there was a good bet the whole uncomfortable thing was going to stick for a while.
At least for as long as they were making small talk. If they had something in common they could talk about instead, it would go a lot better.
Finding that out was probably the point of small talk.
"Fine." Was that short? That was short. "It's not New York." She could take that however she wanted. Missing people, missing her life, hating the small town thing. Any assumption would be right.
