Adam hadn't gotten any better at Valentine's Day after a couple of years. Oh, he could do the celebration itself well -- Finch never had any problems with what he did for her, and he never hit on the wrong side of doing too little versus doing too much. His problem was in figuring out what to do. He and Finch were celebrating their third Valentine's Day together, after all; he felt like something special needed to done. Maybe not something extravagant, but something special nonetheless. She deserved it.
She and Katie were out -- it was one of her turns with Katie so he had a chance to be alone, to have time just for himself, or to do homework, or to do whatever. He had his turns with Katie, too. They'd agreed on those early on, realizing that it was equally important for each of them to have time to themselves as it was for them to be a spouse and a parent. And sometimes he did his homework, sometimes did watched TV with no redeeming social value, sometimes he just took a nap without having to worry about needing to get up and deal with work or go take care of Katie. (Which he never minded doing, but even so.)
And today? Today he was trying to decide on Finch's present for Valentine's Day.
He'd finally, after a little while of thinking and entirely too much flailing at Johanna, to start with what he wanted to get Finch as a gift and then go from there. The other woman had reminded him that things were precious to Finch, not because she was materialistic but because she'd had so few truly meaningful things in her life that truly belonged to her. He'd done jewelry before, and books, and other things. They'd all been perfect -- not the "I'll never be able to meet this level again" kind, but the kind where he'd hit the right note. And while he'd flailed at Johanna, he'd also realized after a while that it meant, once he listened to his damn self, he was really pretty good at picking stuff for Finch.
Which was why some poking the internet -- God he was glad the internet still somehow worked -- led him to a necklace that he thought was perfect for her. Because she was brave, so brave, and she didn't even realize it. Brave through her fear, always had been, and he'd loved her from the moment he'd met her -- even if he hadn't realized it then. And after that it hadn't taken him long to find the other necklace he wanted to get her.
Grateful that the decision hadn't taken long after all, Adam did his ordering and then went to get dinner started since Finch and Katie would be home soon.
