"I suppose I've known one or two of those," he said, a certain unsettling smile and high-pitched voice coming to mind. But what was her business with those sorts? Phryne didn't look like she was a constable, but who knew what sort of things happened in her time? He certainly didn't, except for what little Mary had told him.
"Are you in the business of putting them in prison, then?" Edmund asked curiously.
As for the shock... "It was, but... I suppose I must admit that this little piece of America, at least, has certainly grown on me more than I expected it to when I first arrived."
