Every step Jemma took around the base felt like she was going to float away, every light she passed beneath felt like it might blind her, and every sound was impossibly loud. After more than six months stranded on an alien planet with no hope of rescue, almost no hope of continued survival, she was home, and it didn’t feel like home anymore. The planet didn’t feel like home either, though, and now she just felt lost. Sad, lonely, guilty and plagued by nightmares and fears.
Fitz tried, but he didn’t know what had happened there. He couldn’t possibly know. Jemma didn’t want him to, didn’t want to talk about any of it. It felt like she’d betrayed him, everyone really but especially him for having given up hope. She didn’t know how to face him.
Except she would have to. When she woke up from a fitful sleep not in her quiet room at SHIELD, but in a small, tidy house in Madison Valley. She remembered this place, her home, her life. Where Fitz wasn’t her friend, but her husband. The feeling that she’d betrayed him only grew. It was dark yet, the sun just peeking up, and even when it was too bright to handle, Jemma loved that more than anything. There’d been no sun at all the last six months, and she’d missed that.
She pulled a chair, one she remembered talking with Fitz about getting rid of, she’d thought it was too uncomfortable, to the window and curled up in in it, legs tucked up and arms around herself, gazing out the window. The chair didn’t seem so uncomfortable now.
