Who: Nick Sorrentino and Kate Danvers What: Someone’s suddenly human! When: Thursday morning Where: The Little Pack House Warnings: attempted sexytimes Status: Closed/Complete
Sometimes, in Madison Valley, someone woke up to something weird happening. Over the years, Nick had woken up to children, as a child, in the past or on a ship or not remembering town at all. Not once had he woken up feeling quite so different as he did today.
There was nothing wrong, exactly, but something wasn’t right either. There wasn’t any sense of dread of something happening out in town, no anything. He just felt different somehow.
Laying in bed, Kate beside him like she usually was, that at least still felt right and just as it should be, wasn’t any sort of source of confusion, at least no more than it normally was to him, looking up at the ceiling, Nick couldn’t quite put his finger on what was off. But there was definitely something.
***
Kate was fairly well attuned to Nick’s sleep patterns and she cracked her eyes open when she sensed he was awake. It was a little earlier than he actually needed to get up to be ready for work and she was tempted to roll over and go back to sleep until the alarm went off.
And then she remembered that Rocco was up at the big house this morning which meant there was no chance of them being interrupted by a crying baby. That was something they could most definitely take advantage of since it didn’t happen all that often.
Shifting so she was closer to Nick, she ran one foot along his leg.
***
That was definitely one way to distract him from musing about what was going on. If there was anything even going on at all. Maybe it was just his imagination.
“Hi.” There was a touch of laughter in Nick’s voice as he shifted to turn into her. He liked where she was obviously had in mind, and it was exactly the reason why he often made arguments in favour of leaving Rocco with the others for the night. And a serious contributing factor to his being against thinking about starting a family of their own.
They had way too healthy a sex life to ruin it with kids they couldn’t pawn off.
***
“Morning,” Kate said, reaching over to touch his cheek as she rolled to her side to face him. “We have about twenty minutes before your alarm goes off.”
Which meant they had a good half an hour before he actually needed to get up and start getting ready for work. That was more than enough time to get in some quality sex and start the day off right. Kate certainly didn’t mind being able to do this when they let Rocco stay with the others. It wasn’t like she was chomping at the bit to start a family. Yes, some day she wanted Antonio to exist, but not for a few years.
***
It certainly didn’t seem like she wanted years to Nick. But there were better things to consider almost all of the time, especially at the moment.
“Twenty minutes, huh? What’re we going to do with all that time?”
There was no doubt that Nick was thinking about spending it, and in all honesty probably a little more than what he actually had, having sex. Flashing a smile, he leaned in to kiss her, pulling her close.
***
Since he was kissing her, Kate figured she didn’t need to actually answer his question. They were obviously on the same page as to how they wanted to spend their unexpected time and she didn’t resist at all when he pulled her close.
After kissing for a bit, she shifted so she was straddling him, looking down at him with a wicked grin as she reached for his wrists and pinned them over his head.
***
Normally, Nick wouldn’t have thought anything of that. But the force with which she pushed him actually kind of hurt. He just took it to mean that she was more eager than he’d anticipated, and grinned right back up at her, struggling for a moment to free his hands from her grip. He wasn’t trying earnestly, though even then it should’ve been easier.
Nick just took it as more evidence to Kate’s mood, and grinned back up at her. “I hope you’ve got something in mind here.”
***
Kate figured that he his attempts to free his hands were half-hearted so it didn’t phase her that he wasn’t able to do so. “Oh, I’ve got a few things in mind,” she said, shifting on top of him in a very deliberate way to tease him on purpose. She wouldn’t do that for very long since they were on the clock, so to speak, but it was fun to tease.
And if her movements were rough, well, that was just how werewolf sex was.
***
Normally, Nick wouldn’t have even been fazed by getting a little rough. That was how they were. They could take it, and it was just what happened when they let themselves be what they were instead of being mindful of hurting someone. Normally, Nick wouldn’t have thought twice about it.
But normally, Nick gave as good as he got.
His brow creased just for a second as he once again tried to free his hands, but didn’t have the strength to pull loose of hers, and he could feel her fingers pressing into his skin, leaving bruises. That was unfamiliar.
He wasn’t going to dwell on it, instead squirming beneath her in response to the teasing. “You’d better get on with it before I get ideas of my own.”
***
Too bad that Kate noticed his brow creasing and actually paid attention when he tried to free his hands this time. It seemed like he actually was trying and unable to which was unusual. They were usually pretty evenly matched strength wise and if he couldn’t put forth a better effort to pull away, there was something wrong.
Even though they didn’t usually get sick, her mind immediately jumped to some sort of bizarre illness, remembering all too well how many people went down with that weird plague almost two years ago.
Still, since he didn’t seem bothered, she decided not to say anything yet. “Oh, really?” she teased. “What are you gonna do about it?”
***
Nick might not have the strength to free himself for some reason, but he still had a lifetime of training. He still knew how to move. So he did, twisting beneath her to push her off of him and onto her back, using his weight rather than his strength to pin her.
“Something like this,” he answered her lightly, leaning in to kiss the side of her neck. “Stop wasting time, Katie.”
They had more than enough, and it wasn’t like Nick was going to mind if he went to work a few minutes late for her. But they didn’t get nearly enough time just the two of them anymore, and he wasn’t going to let any of it go to waste.
***
“Mmmm.” She didn’t really have a problem letting him take control and she tilted her head to the side to give him better access to her neck. “I wasn’t wasting anything,” she countered. “I’m making the most of it by not rushing.”
With a baby around, they usually had to resort to quickies. Not that she had a problem with them, in fact, they were fun sometimes because they felt so illicit, but when they had the time to draw things out, she was going to take advantage of it.
That didn’t stop her from wrapping her legs around his and holding him close.
***
There were better parts of their time together to not rush, as far as Nick was concerned. The parts where he wasn’t being teased, specifically.
“Uh huh,” he murmured against her neck, not really listening to what she had to say anymore. The pressure of her legs was a bit more than what he was used to, something was definitely going on, definitely not right, but Nick had way better things to think about for the moment. Things that were Kate.
Things like running a hand across her skin, taking full advantage of their twenty-some minutes.
***
As much as Kate liked the way Nick’s hands felt against her skin, she wasn’t going to let him tease her more than she teased him and she moved to flip him off of her so she could be on top again. They had fairly athletic sex 99% of the time, so this was nothing unusual for them.
“Now who’s teasing?” she asked as she switched their positions and straddled him again.
***
Nick tried to resist her, really, actually tried, but true to this morning’s form, couldn’t. He flew onto his back with a soft ‘oof’, the wind all but knocked out of him even on the soft bed.
“Still you,” he said nonetheless, trying to focus on her, rather than his own odd reactions. His muscles might not be working right, but the rest of him definitely was. And the problem with his strength probably wasn’t anything to worry about. Maybe he’d just pulled something or hadn’t woken up properly yet or something.
***
This time, she definitely noticed that something wasn’t quite right and it made her pull back and frown down at Nick. “What’s wrong?” Kate asked, the concern obvious in her tone.
As much as she wanted to take advantage of their free morning, she wasn’t going to do anything that was going to cause trouble for Nick and something was definitely off in how he was reactions.
***
They so rarely had time like this between Rocco and the Pack and their jobs and social lives that Nick just wanted to focus on it, take advantage of the time.
“Nothing.”
It was a shame that Nick was a terrible liar.
Something was definitely up, he didn’t feel quite right, and still had no idea what, exactly, it was.
***
“Liar,” Kate said, moving so she was no longer straddling him. “Tell me.”
Werewolves almost never got sick and if he was, then she needed to make Jeremy examine him immediately because it couldn’t be anything good.
***
“I don’t know,” he admitted, even as he moved to reach for her again. “It’s just a feeling.” That something wasn’t right, with him specifically. It wasn’t really anything bad, just not right, and he was more interested in Kate than solving the puzzle.
Nick wasn’t someone who cared about puzzles or anything like that. He was content to let them be. Particularly when the alternative was having sex.
***
Too bad for Nick that Kate did enjoy solving puzzles. And she also didn’t like the idea that her partner apparently had a bad feeling about something. She moved out of his reach with a frown.
“What kind of feeling? Do I need to call Jeremy?”
She wasn’t about to take any chances with his well being.
***
Nick sighed. There went his hopes for a good morning. Apparently talking about his weird feeling was what was happening instead.
“I don’t know. Just...different.”
He felt weak, but in a way that wasn’t like he was sick or anything. He’d been sick as a kid, before being a werewolf had kicked in. It wasn’t like that.
***
Kate didn’t even attempt to stifle her sigh. “Different how?” she asked, trying to get some sort of actual information out of him so they could try to figure out what was going on. If there was something weird happening in town, they needed to know.
Now that she wasn’t distracted with fooling around, she scanned him carefully and paid attention to all of her senses. Her eyes widened in surprise.
“Uh… we definitely need to get Jeremy,” she said. “You don’t smell right.” After a moment, she realized how that probably sounded. “I mean, you don’t smell like normal. Like a werewolf. You kind of smell… human.”
***
“Human?”
That was ridiculous. He wasn’t human. He hadn’t ever been human, not really. Growing up he hadn’t really been a werewolf either, but that had always been who he was anyway. He wasn’t human. And how could he just suddenly not be what he was? It wasn’t like he could turn off being supernatural.
“I think your nose is fooling you, Katie.” No way was he just human.
***
“I know it sounds crazy, Nick,” Kate said. She wasn’t even sure if she trusted her nose in this situation. But having grown up around werewolves and knowing what they smelled like, even before they fully manifested, like Rocco, she was well attuned to their scents and right now, Nick smelled more like Stiles than anyone else. “But, seriously, you kind of smell the same as Stiles right now.”
She wasn’t sure if there was a problem with him or with her or maybe even with both of them. But whatever was going on, they needed to not deal with it alone.
***
Crinkling his nose, Nick paused and sniffed the air around them. And nothing. It was just air. He took a deeper breath, and still there wasn’t even the faint after-scent of clean laundry or the unscented soaps they all used. Nothing.
He listened, carefully, and couldn’t hear Kate’s heartbeat or anyone up and talking in the big house.
Surprise was underscored with a touch of fear when he looked at her again. “I think I’m human,” he agreed. How the hell did that happen? “Maybe you should get Jeremy.”
***
Kate nodded, biting her lower lip out of reflex because she was worried. It seemed like there was something weird happening in Madison Valley again, but she couldn’t figure out why it would make Nick human. They obviously hadn’t swapped bodies with anyone or turned into other people. Was there some wacky universe out there where Nick was human? It was hard to imagine how that would be the case.
“I’ll go get him,” she said. “You stay here.”
He was safer in their little house than he would be anywhere else until they figured this out.
***
Safe wasn’t something Nick ever tried to be. But he’d listen this one time, for as long as it took to get Jeremy at least. He just nodded, made a show of being settled in bed to make it clear he wasn’t planning on going anywhere, at least not yet, waved her off and watched her go.
It wasn’t like he lived a dangerous life, though. As long as none of the Pack tried to throw him around or anything like that, he was probably going to be okay. He might not even miss being a werewolf that much.
