Who: Charles Xavier/Erik Lehnsherr
What: Everything’s gone all wrong
When: Thursday morning
Where: Erik’s bed
Warnings: TBD
Status: Closed/gdoc TBC in comments
Charles had been sleeping quite soundly next to Erik. Then something startled him awake. Looking around he had no idea what woken him, nor why he was feeling rather panicked. But something wasn’t right.
That was when he learned what was wrong. Charles tried to open his mind to sense out for thoughts and got nothing. Not Erik’s sleeping mind next to him. Not the neighbors. Nothing. It was as if his were the only mind left, but he knew that was true. His powers were gone!
He began to hyperventilate.
***
Erik wasn't a very sound sleeper. He'd had to watch his own back for many years so he was awake as soon as Charles startled but he hadn't moved or opened eyes right away. Mostly because he was trying to figure out why the world seemed so flat and quiet. There was usually a spark of energy evident to his senses at all times and the constant hiss and squeal of radio waves was gone as well.
But it was the gasping breath that opened his eyes and made him turn to look at his friend. "Charles? What's wrong?"
***
“It’s gone,” Charles said in a small, fear filled voice. “My telepathy. It’s gone!” And was left feeling vulnerable, empty and alone. Logically, it was ridiculous. Erik was right there next to him, but he couldn’t sense his friend.
He made to scramble out of bed.
***
Erik's hand snapped out to catch Charles by the arm before he could get out of bed. If his telepathy was gone then that explained why everything was so flat and silent. A small thread of panic wormed it's way through Erik's chest but he ruthlessly shoved it down to deal with later.
"We'll figure it out." Because Charles lived like he did with more senses than a normal person and waking up blinded was frightening and confusing but he'd deal with it for Charles.
***
Charles’ head whipped around to give Erik a wide eyed look, his chest almost heaving. Even though he’d lost his telepathy he hadn’t lost his intellect. He realized that if he was without his powers there was a good chance Erik was too.
He lurched back to pull Erik into a tight hug.
***
Erik might not be able to feel that extra energy that should be around Charles like a signature with his own personal magnetic field but he still felt like Charles, and smelled like Charles. That was enough for now. Erik leaned into the hug but he wasn't relaxed.
"Things are always temporary here when things happen."
***
Charles wasn’t relaxed either. Not by half. The hug was for himself as well as Erik. There was relief that he could seek his friend like this. If this had happened after he’d first gotten here, Charles would have been left to his own devices for comfort. He could have done it, but this was better.
“I feel so alone,” he muttered against Erik’s shoulder. “Isolated. I don’t remember a time without my telepathy.”
***
"I don't remember a time without your telepathy either." It was said with his usual dry humor in an attempt to lighten the mood for Charles. "You might feel alone but you won't be alone."
Neither of them would. But good luck getting Erik to admit any fear or vulnerability.
***
Charles pulled back enough to cup Erik’s face with his hands and claim an almost desperate kiss before he put his forehead to his friend’s. For a moment he felt that if he tried hard enough the physical touch would connect their minds again, but still nothing happened.
“I’m glad you are with me, my friend.”
***
"Where else would I be?" Erik put his hand on the side of Charles' face before reaching over to the table beside the bed to turn on the light since it was still a little dark in the bedroom and knocked over a glass of water.
Or at least he had a perfect vision of that in his head before he actually did reach over...and knocked over the glass of water which meant he stared at it in confusion instead of moving to clean it up at first.
***
Charles chuckled. Leave it to Erik to state the obvious. It was refreshing and comforting. Normal. “Yes, of course. Good point.”
He pulled away to sit back as he pushed his fingers back through his hair and tried to think of something positive to make of this. He was having a difficult time coming up with something then noticed Erik staring at the overturned glass.
“Erik?”
***
That jolted him back into moving so Erik snorted and let out a sigh before he leaned over to pick up the glass and figure out what he could grab to mop up the water. "I'm fine, just clumsy." And possibly delusional.
***
“I can imagine,” Charles said with a sympathetic smile and a touch of his hand to Erik’s back. Without his powers it must be like learning to walk all over again.
“Let me,” he reached to take the glass from Erik’s hand.
***
Erik let him take the glass but then even though Charles was right there he saw him in the bathroom with the water running and the glass forgotten in one hand as he held the other over his mouth to muffle himself from panicking out loud.
It made him pull his hand back and rub his forehead with his fingers. "I strongly suggest we don't try work today."
***
“Yes,” Charles agreed quietly as he made to get out of bed once more. “I think that is a very good idea.” He’d call the dean soon to cancel classes for the day then see about a bottle of bourbon. Maybe two.
Then, just as Erik had Seen, he disappeared into the bathroom to have a bit of a meltdown before filling the glass with water.
***
Erik was not amused. First to be blinded (no matter that his eyes still worked that wasn't the primary sense he relied on for information) then to start seeing things that weren't under his control but that weren't exactly hallucinations either...he wasn't sure what to make of it all. And that replaced any of the panic he'd felt himself with anger.
He didn't want to know if what he'd Seen was correct but he could hear enough muffled sound out of the bathroom to suspect he was.
Erik got out of bed and paced around the room because he just couldn't sit still.
Charles emerged from the bathroom a few moments later, glass of water in hand, then blinked to see Erik in such a state. Concerned, he walked toward his friend with the glass held out.
“I cannot imagine this agitation is for my situation.”
***
“It is a disturbing situation.” It was just as odd for Erik to see his friend without powers as it was for him to be without his own. He took the glass of water and put it aside on the table without drinking any of it.
"Disturbing enough to warrant a little agitation.” And here was the down side for Charles without his powers he would have a more difficult time telling if Erik was hedging or not. “And it’s possible it is more than just here, there are many in town with powers.”
***
Charles sighed as he shook his head. There could very easily be people in distress. One in particular came to mind, but he wondered if she wouldn’t see this as a blessing. “Lydia will either be upset or overjoyed.”
Then something else occurred to him. “Perhaps we could put some clothing on and check the networks.” He couldn’t help but smirk a little since he and Erik both were in a very decided state of undress.
***
Erik didn't even bother to look down at his state of undress when it was mentioned. Lydia's state of mind was a very good point. "Then again Lydia hasn't had an episode recently so maybe she wouldn't even notice." Or if she still had her abilities maybe this would be a trigger. You could never tell.
"I'm not sure I'm planning on leaving anywhere but it would be good to know what's going on." He moved back toward the bed to pick up his phone and was hit by a flicker of images of posts before he even touched it but clenched his teeth and managed to pick the phone up anyway before he sat on the edge of the bed.
