Summer hadn't quite given up its hold, but Octavia could feel the change in the air as fall approached. She was very much looking forward to the cooler weather, at least until it got cold. She needed to talk to Lincoln about the possibility of taking Aurelia back to the house in town for the winter, though she didn't want to do that, she wanted to make sure the baby was safe, and comfortable.
For now, though, the cave was perfect for their little family, and Octavia didn't want to think about going back to the house quite yet. She hoped to have another month or so of decent weather. And she was definitely taking advantage of the cool evening by taking Aurelia for a walk by the river. She hated to put the baby in a stroller, so she carried her in a harness that strapped the infant to her chest.
"Someday when you're big enough to handle a spear, your daddy will teach you to fish," Octavia told Aurelia as they stood by the edge of the river. The fish were jumping. "But you only fish for food. Not sport," she said, though the baby was too small to really understand. Octavia didn't see any reason not to keep her informed from a very young age. Hunting was for survival, not fun.
The baby flapped her pudgy little arms, and spit her pacifier out. Octavia sighed. Leaning over to pick it up with Aurelia strapped to her chest was not easy. She was tempted to leave it there, they were cheap and easy enough to replace.
