Who: Kira Yukimura and Scott McCall What: Being awkward and adorable? Where: Secret Stash When: Backdated to last week (before MCU disappearances) Warnings: low Status: Closed/Complete
Kira had a mostly quiet day today. Everything went fine with her Guardian job. Mia was as safe as could be with her. She made that her main priority. She volunteered for this, and she was not going to give any reason to make Rose and Dimitri regret allowing her to protect a charge.
That meant she couldn't really hang out with Scott and her other friends from home. Not during school. She was okay with that, though. They could hang out more after school and weekends. She still wasn't quite sure what was going on with her and Scott. She still liked him a whole lot. That was something from home she did not forget about. It was weird, though, hanging out with him here knowing they were more than friends back home.
Either way, it was nice he was here, that they all were. It was still a nice surprise when he stopped by the comic place. She was almost certain he wasn't as into comics as someone like Stiles was. So why was he here now?
"Scott!" she greeted, bright smile on her face. "Hey! You here to check out comics?"
Or was he maybe there to see her? She could have some hope, right?
***
Because of the Guardian duties Kira had taken up, Scott didn't really get to see her throughout the school day. Which, he knew was kind of important for her, but in his mind it also totally sucked. Scott liked seeing Kira throughout the day. So there were weekends and after school.
Scott didn't know exactly what to think about this whole thing with Kira, at least not yet. He guessed things didn't go completely horrible in the next month since she still seemed to like him. Scott didn't even know why he was so unsure about what to do when it came to her. It should pretty much be a no-brainer, right?
But he wanted to find out, which was really the reason he'd ended up at the Secret Stash. He definitely wasn't a comic book person, not like Stiles, but Kira's actual job was here and so he was entertaining the thought of pretending long enough to hang out with her for a few minutes.
"Oh, hey!" Scott smiled widely in return, suddenly second-guessing if this was a good idea. "I, uh… not really? I was just… walking by. And I remembered you work here, so."
Yeah, not at all what he planned to say.
***
Kira's bright grin might have grown just a little more. So he was here to see her? She could certainly live with that. "Oh! Well, this is a good place to just be walking by."
She was cringing slightly internally. That just seemed like a silly thing for her to say. "Um, I can show you some of the newer comics. Stiles might like them, so..."
This wasn't awkward at all. Nope.
***
"Yeah, I thought so."
It was like a weird thing, right, that Scott couldn't stop smiling when he was talking to Kira. Especially if she was smiling, too. That was weird, right? But it was definitely a thing that was happening more often the longer he was in this town. And, besides, Kira was great.
Scott didn't even think anything of whether that was a silly thing of her to say or not. And even if it was a little awkward, he was going to go with it anyway. "Yeah, we can do that. Since you have to work and everything."
***
Kira thought Scott was pretty great, too. In fact, they were pretty happy a few months into his future. There were times when she wanted to say something about it, but she wasn't sure if it would just make things more weird. Maybe she would sometime, but the comic store didn't seem like the right place.
Still, his smile was a good sign to her. He really seemed happy to be in her presence. "Okay. So...are you a Marvel or DC person?"
She wondered if he even knew the difference. No matter, she headed for a shelf filled with comics about various superheroes.
***
Scott was kind of -- well, not kind of, but definitely -- oblivious to exactly what things were like for him and Kira in the future. He'd thought about asking her, but he didn't want to ruin things. Things felt ruined enough sometimes with what he found out about Liam. Because he hadn't known what to do about him. But right now wasn't the right time to think about that.
Scott was glad that he could at least say that he knew the difference between the two as he followed her to one of the aisles. Not that it mattered since this whole thing was just a smokescreen to spend some time with Kira. Nothing more than that. And maybe he'd grab something for Stiles, too.
"DC?" Scott answered, though it came out more as a question.
***
Kira just smiled, knowing he was more than likely unsure of that choice. She thought it was kind of cute in a way. She wasn't going to voice that thought, though. "I think we have something Superman related around here. I'm sure Stiles would appreciate that."
She couldn't help adding that last part, knowing who the real comic fan was of the two of them. But it was the kind of teasing someone does when she likes a person. It wasn't really a big secret. Even from the point in time Scott was from, he must have known she had those kinds of feelings for him. They had been close to being together then.
She found the comic she was looking for and went to hand it over. That's when her hand brushed over his and...that was kind of nice.
***
Scott just kind of had to laugh that Kira knew well enough to know that other than the big, popular stuff, anything else he knew about comics was all because of his friendship with Stiles, so he just gave Kira a nod. "Yeah, that sounds good."
He definitely knew that Kira liked him. After all, her dad had kind of given that much away that one time. He hadn't thought too much about what it might be like in the future when Kira was from, but he had to guess they were still having this whole liking each other thing going on. Or… maybe they were dating? He could ask her, but that seemed weird, and what if her answer was no or something?
Still, there was a slight smile on his face as he took the comic from her and their hands brushed.
***
If Scott did ask, then he'd probably like her answer. They were dating, and it was nice. She'd given him the space he needed after Allison...after terrible things happened. She let him come back to her on his own time. She wasn't impatient, as well she should not have been.
But she also thought just telling him that would make things more awkward. It would put so much pressure on both of them to possibly make things work here. She didn't want that added stress. She thought, if anything were to happen, it should happen organically, and without outside influences.
"Anyway, yeah, this is a good one. You should read it sometime."
She was still smiling in that adorable way of hers. Maybe if he read one, he'd like it, and then he'd keep coming back.
***
If Scott had actually known anything about how things had happened for them, he probably would have been grateful for her, and her patience. Because Scott knew that Allison was a lot to deal with, especially when they were trying to be friends and he hadn't experienced it yet but he had to think after she'd… died he'd have pulled back some.
And he was totally glad now that she wasn't asking for anything from him, that they were just… doing things. Besides, he really liked spending time with her.
"Yeah, I'll definitely read it," Scott said, looking down at the comic before smiling back at her. Her smile was kind of contagious like that. He might stop in to see her again, anyway.
***
Kira very much liked spending time with Scott, too. Who knows, maybe things would fall back into place, the way things were back home. Well, maybe not everything. She could do without the berserkers getting in the way. There was none of that in this place, at least.
"Great, I'll take care of that up for you." She took the comic behind the counter and scanned it and told him the price. "And I have an employee discount I'll just add on to that. Or subtract. You know, because discount
She smiled a little bit sheepishly, like it pained her to make him pay for it at all.
***
Scott followed Kira back over to the counter and watched as she rang it up, a smile spreading across his face as she offered to use her employee discount for him.
"Thanks, Kira. You're the best."
And, of course, he meant that. He definitely meant that. And not just because she was giving him a discount on a comic he might not even read later because he'd actually just used it as an excuse to come see her. She was just the best in general and wasn't even phased about having to pay as he took out some money.
***
Kira's grin that had been there since he had stopped in wasn't going away quite yet.
"I try," she said as she finished up the transaction.
She stepped out from behind the counter and handed him the bag with the comic inside. She would usually stay behind it when dealing with a customer, but Scott wasn't just any customer.
"Thanks for stopping in. There are a lot more if you ever want to check any more out."
Or if you want to see me, she thought to herself. That was kind of implied in the part that was said out loud.
***
Scott took the bag, reluctant to leave, but still knowing that he really, really didn't have any excuse to hang around longer. Plus, Kira was supposed to be working, so he couldn't distract from that either. There was no point in getting her into any kind of trouble.
"Yeah, I'll definitely come by again."
To see her, mainly. But he thought that was pretty obvious.
***
It did seem obvious to her. Or at least that's what she'd been hoping. It made up for her being unable to hang out or talk to him much at school. Too bad it was only for a little while.
She could maybe make it last just a smidge more. That's why she was walking with him toward the door. "So. Um, thanks again! This place could use all the business it can. And... you know, it was good seeing you."
***
Scott honestly didn't think anything of Kira walking him to the door, mainly because he was too busy thinking about how much he wished he could see her more often, but that wasn't anything new. Maybe he should talk to Stiles about what comics he could ask about so next time he could stay longer?
With that plan in mind, Scott smiled at Kira again. "It was good seeing you, too." He glanced back at the door and then to her. "I guess I'll text you later or something?"
***
"Yeah, sure. Text me later," Kira repeated as she watched him head out the door.
Once she was alone, she winced both mentally and physically. Why did she just let him go like that? Why couldn't she find the courage to just talk to him about what she really wanted to talk about? It wasn't comics, that was for sure.
She'd really fallen for him back home. Why couldn't she just tell him that instead of hide her feelings?
