Who: Katniss Everdeen and Rosie Mellark
What: Discovering Prim's gone
Where: A few places in town
When: Tuesday afternoon
Warnings: Hunger Games warnings; mentions of character death
Status: complete narrative
Ever since she learned that her Aunt Prim was alive and well in this strange little town, Rosie had been begging to meet her namesake. Katniss tried putting her off, not wanting the existence of the child to reveal her future to Prim, but she finally decided that Prim would understand it was only one potential future, given the existence of her child with Gale.
She warned Rosie that it would upset Aunt Prim to learn that she was dead in the little girl's world and hoped the child would refrain from saying anything overt. If Prim asked, Katniss knew she wouldn't be able to lie about what she learned and the last thing she wanted to do was burden her sister with that knowledge.
When they arrived at the diner where she arranged to meet Prim, she got a weird feeling in her stomach. Prim was never late and would have sent a message if something was going to prevent her from meeting them. She tried calling and got an automated message telling her that the number was no longer in service. A feeling of dread filled her and she took off to Gale's apartment, pounding on the door, calling Prim's name.
Her knocking went unanswered and she knew. Knew without a doubt that this place had done the most cruel thing it could possibly do and sent her sweet, innocent sister back home to face her death. Poor Rosie didn't understand what was going on or why her mother was so upset. Katniss managed to hold herself together long enough to drop the girl at the bakery with Darcy, who promised to keep an eye on her until Peeta could pick her up, and made it back to the apartment before completely breaking down.
Just like when Gale and Peeta told her Prim's future, she sat on the bathroom floor, emptying the contents of her stomach into the toilet as she shook with the unfairness of it all. There were so many people in this town who were desperate to return to their home worlds and her sister had to be sent back.
When she finally cried herself out, she knew she would need to let the others know, so she pulled out her phone and tapped out a brief message before crawling into her bed and hiding under the covers.
