Marius had closed his office at noon, and while he still carried his phone in case of emergency calls, he was looking forward to the weekend as much as anyone else. Molly was coming over later, and they were having dinner and an, uh, night in, and to be honest, his life seemed rather pleasant at the moment. Occasionally he felt a twinge of guilt over not being home, helping with the War effort, but he also strongly felt that War was not something one should particularly miss. It wasn't like it was an enjoyable thing, to be certain.
He liked this town. He liked the peace of it after the quick pace of London. He liked the different sorts of people here. He loved reading of the advances in Medicine that had taken place since his day, making his chosen profession look almost as magical as the spells and charms that his siblings could perform. He liked having his own practice, and time off to enjoy himself away from the fear of battle and death. It was truly one of the best places he'd lived, and he found himself...almost happy. It was strange how quickly one could grow accustomed to a new place.
Today, after closing, he'd made his way down to the market not far from the apartments. It wasn't as large as Walmart, or Kroger, but he felt more at home there, less intimidated by the size of the place and the vastness of the selection. This place was a simpler market, with everything a person could need, and still considerably more than was available to him in war-rationed England.
He brought his groceries to the check-out lane, and got in line. The person in front of him was counting pennies for their order, and still seemed certain to come up short. Pulling his debit card out of his pocket, he smiled and offered it to the clerk, to cover the difference. It was true, he'd grown up rich and spoiled, and without much time for those who were less advantaged than himself, but he'd quickly learned how little money meant when it came to real happiness.
He smiled at the person in front of him, without a great deal of condescension (at least for a Black), and nodded. "It's no problem, I assure you."
