She should have realized sooner that this was just another one of Jeanine's torture simulations. It didn't have the finesse or the complexity of something Tobias would have thought up. She should have seen beyond her own relief at seeing him unharmed to know that there was something wrong.
There wasn't enough pain in her body for this to have been anything close to reality. Tobias hadn't even asked her if she could walk or how her wounds were -- something that he had always done before. When her brain finally made her see sense and see that this was just another damn simulation, she almost collapsed with the disappointment.
"You are the simulation," she whispered to him, before kissing him. If she was going to die in this, she was going to it on her terms.
She pulled away from Tobias, making her battered body stand up and face away from him as she started screaming at Jeanine.
Instead of the simulation ending and Tris finding herself back in the lab, strapped down, she found herself in what looked like a park.
"No," she whispered, shaking her head. "No!"
It seemed that Jeanine was changing her torture tactics -- moving Tris from one simulation to another before she could recover any part of herself.
She felt the grass beneath her knees and she wasn't sure if she could keep from breaking down if this one lasted very long. It was too nice; too clean and calm for her to be used to.
It seemed unnecessarily cruel to do this to her when she had already lost everything that mattered.
