Harry extended his senses and felt around the warm power emanating from the ward around the apartment. It was well done--if simplistic in comparison to Harry's own--with a mild touch that--if Harry were not so excellent at controlling his mind and outside influences on it--would compel him to back off and leave it. He could have knocked it down without much effort, but he figured he wouldn't like the results of that from what he could read of it. Plus it was rude to force the kid to have to put it back up. He examined it for a while longer, finding the threads that connected it and making a mental note on how to subtly improve it, if the kid ever wanted to know what Harry found lacking. But otherwise it was sufficient and nicely done.
New living spaces were hard to ward, hard to defend, because it wasn't home until you made it that. He could have forced his way in, and brought a considerable amount of his own strength behind him, while lopping off a significant fraction at the same time. But there was no need for that kind of dramatics.
The wizard knocked.
And gripped his staff in his left hand, newly carved and unabused, but better and comforting and strong in his grasp. The duster draped over his shoulders, a cherished gift Molly'd given him, and absolute death in the Summer heat but necessary for protection.
So what? It was a healthy wizard's sense of caution, okay? Paranoia, whatever.
When Sirius opened the door Harry peered at him with all the natural menace that came with an NBA sized madman carrying a wicked cool staff and wearing a black leather duster in the middle of freaking Summer. Even while not trying to look intimidating.
"I brought beer," he said, holding up a grocery bag.
