The ground is alive and there are things down there that will eat you.

Why would The Dome want to open a portal to a world full of giant worms? Who picks out these portals?

If it's from the movie someone was talking about, the creatures hunt based on sound. A gun will probably guarantee getting swallowed, unless it's a very big gun you can shoot from a distance.

Yeah, called Tremors. Stars the great Kevin Bacon.

It's a small little desert town. Not much to see anyway, besides giant worms.
