Who: Kayla and Kol
What: Kol shows his daughter magic
Where: their house
When: backdated to Sunday
Rating: lowish?
Status: Closed

Kayla was in the kitchen making brunch for her and her dad. She liked having a big brunch on Sundays and coffee with Kol. With her schedule these days (classes and still juggling two jobs), the teen made sure she set aside a few hours to just catch up with her dad. Plus, this way they could have a check-in, something Cami encouraged as Kayla made more progress with her mental health.

Today she'd decided on waffles with thyme poached fruit and sausages from the local butcher. She hummed as she finished cooking. When she opened the fridge, she made a note to mention to her dad that he should probably run out for blood bags today unless he felt like being a hangry vampire.

"Dad! Breakfast is almost ready!"

"Be right there, love!" Kol called. The witch tugged on his Henley and padded down the stairs, moving at a human's pace. He slipped into the kitchen, pressing a kiss to his daughter's forehead before pouring himself a cup of coffee.

"How are you doing today, darling? It smells delicious by the way." Kol opened the fridge and reached for the creamer, pausing when he spotted the blood bags on the shelf. What were those doing in here? He briefly racked his brain and, eventually, shrugged. Maybe he bought them for a spell or something. He added creamer to his coffee and returned it to the fridge, shutting it without a word.

The witch slid into one of the empty chairs at the table, sipping at his steaming cup of coffee.

The way her father moved gave the teen pause. He looked the same, but he seemed different. She smiled though at the forehead kiss.

"I'm okay. The tutor is helping me make headway in my business class..." she didn't know if she wanted to continue in her direction of school, but she didn't want to give up yet. "Thanks! I did want to try a new recipe with the fruit."

She plated the food and sat down, passing one plate to her father. Her cup of coffee already sat at her place/ "You're running low on blood, Dad. Just in case you didn't notice."

"Good. That's what we bloody pay him for after all." Or just bribe him, whichever works. Curing ailments by magical means worked wonders for getting your daughter through college. He raised his coffee cup to take a sip and offered her a smile. "Looking forward to trying it, love. I am starving." He took a of coffee.

She set down the plates, heaped decently high with food, and Kol waited until his daughter had taken a seat before digging in. "Delicious, darling. Absolutely," Kol complimented, once he'd swallowed a few bites of the meal. Though her next words had him pausing in his quest to fill his mouth with as much food as possible. Maybe she remembered what the blood was for. Kol certainly didn't, but her words implied that he should. Ok-ay.

"Do you recall what it is for? I saw it in there and assumed it was for some spell, but I can't remember which," Kol replied, sighing. He smirked. "I guess it's a sign I'm doing far too much magic for my own good, right?"

Kayla laughed. "True." Though she'd really rather not be bribing anyone so she got through college. The teen preferred getting herself through on her merit alone (though she wasn't above her dad helping in very specific instances.)

She thankfully had her mouth full when her father asked her why they had blood in the fridge. Because her eyes took in her father and she realized that was the different part. Her dad...didn't have that aspect of vampire which always hung around him. That's why she'd heard him enter the room and why he seemed to look slightly less...god like.

The teen made a quick decision because the Dome seemed to have made her father think he...wasn't a vampire. Hopefully telling him the truth wouldn't come back to bite her. But they didn't tend to lie to each other.

After swallowing her food, Kayla said, "So...I think the Dome messed with you because generally you eat blood as a vampire..."

Kol almost choked on his bite of food. Quickly, he reached for his glass of orange juice and took a sip, narrowly avoiding a coughing fit. Vampire? What the bloody hell was she talking about? There was no way Kol would ever be a vampire. He would rather die first.

"Kayla, that's-that's impossible, love. I've never been a vampire in my life. I've always been a witch and so have my siblings," Kol explained, shaking his head. "The Dome must be messing with you."

Yet, Kol couldn't deny the nagging feeling in the back of his mind, telling him that she might be right. That those blood bags were generally what he ate...because he was a vampire. Not a witch. The thought depressed Kol because he loved magic, loved having power, and yet, why would his daughter lie? Why couldn't he remember what the blood bags were for?

Kayla looked over in concern as her father made noises that indicated possible choking. She didn't know CPR. Well she'd picked wrong and silently hoped when her father returned as himself he...didn't mind the words she spoke.

"Oh. Okay. I'm sorry," she said hurriedly, not wishing to make her father worry so much. "I suppose it is." Kayla stuffed her mouth full of food to buy herself a few more seconds because she couldn't remember a more awkward convo with her father.

When she swallowed with some coffee, Kayla decided she needed to change the subject now. "You promised to show me magic after brunch." Okay he hadn't, but if her father was a witch like fuck she'd give up an opportunity to see him in his element.

Kol's expression softened and he offered Kayla a smile. "It's okay, darling," he said, reassuringly. "I promise." He was also immensely relieved she hadn't insisted he was a vampire, but Kol wasn't going to mention that part. He also wasn't going to mention how, for a second, he'd actually almost considered believing her because the two would never lie to one another.

No, it was best to move on from all of it. He turned back to his own breakfast, taking a few more bites as Kayla took a sip from her coffee. He would focus on what was real, on his daughter, and on the power coursing through his veins. Magic. Vampires? That would never be him.

He brightened at her statement. "Of course I did. I don't know why I'm not remembering, but after brunch I will show you a little hocus pocus of sorts." He said the last part with a playful wink, clearly pleased at the idea of showing her magic.

Kayla's relationship with her father had been built on honesty and tough truths at times, never lies. Unlike her birth father, she never felt the need to lie to Kol.

"Okay," she said with a smile. This whole thing was weird, but at least he remembered Kayla as his daughter or this would be more awkward. No, she wouldn't insist something that caused her father distress, no matter how honest. He'd remember in a few days and selfishly, she wanted to see her father as a witch.

"It's been a weird few days." Kayla offered a bright smile. "Good." She could put off homework for a few hours. And move the blood bags so he didn't see them again and be reminded.
