Inej was humming as she changed her clothes and left the bathroom. Kaz was due home at any moment and she wanted to be at the door to greet him when he arrived. It was one of her favorite times of the day. He left for work at a certain time of the day and if there weren’t any complications or issues, he was always home at the same exact time.
Dinner was on the table. It looked perfect as it always did, though she didn’t remember when she had cooked it. She just knew that she was suddenly setting the table and making sure everything looked nice for her husband.
She heard his key in the door and lit the candles on the table.
When the door opened, she was waiting there to step into his arms.
Kaz worked a normal office job; he was a manager and his hours rarely, if ever, varied. Like the rest of his life. Everyday, he woke up, showered, dressed, and ate breakfast with his beautiful wife, Inej. Afterwards, he’d kiss her good-bye and leave for a day at the office. Unless it was a weekend day and then he was at home, doing yard work or taking Inej out to see a movie. It was all rather mundane. Except for the parts where he did something rather silly and then there was laughter that suddenly rang out.
Oh, it had been happening for as long as he could remember. He was used to it by now. Like everything else, it was just part of his mundane existence.
Stepping out of his compact car, Kaz shut the garage and unlocked the door to the house. Like everyday, Inej was there to greet him, looking as beautiful as she did when he left.
“Inej, how are you, my darling?” Kaz wrapped her in his arms and buried his face in her hair, inhaling her scent. “You look beautiful as always.”
Inej wrapped her arms around Kaz, burying her face in his neck as she heard a low sound of something like “Awww…” as they greeted each other. She had gotten used to hearing those sounds whenever she and Kaz held or greeted each other so it no longer bothered her. It was something that had just always been there.
“I am doing much better now that my handsome husband is with me,” she said as they held each other. “How was your day, my love?”
This was also routine. She would ask him about his day and he would tell her and then she would lead him to the table.
The “Aww” that rippled off the audience was typical for such a moment. It happened every single time Kaz greeted Inej or told her good-bye in the mornings before heading for work. It was something neither of them noticed. If it didn’t happen, they would assume something was wrong.
Her answer coaxed a smile from Kaz. “Normal. Rather boring, but I can’t complain.” He pulled away, but took her hand, allowing her to lead him to the kitchen, like normal. “What about yours? Did you go to the store? Run into any friends?” Which was clearly code for if she heard any kind of gossip.
She smiled as soon as he asked about her day. “My day was pretty normal. I ran a few errands and saw a few of my friends.” Her eyes lit up. “I have heard a few interesting things while out and about today.”
Once Kaz sat down for dinner, she poured his drink and then sat down in her chair next to him.
She waited for him to start eating so she would know he enjoyed the dinner. There was low music playing from somewhere but she was so used to hearing it during her life that she only took notice of it if the music changed to something depressing or alarming.
“Did you now?” Kaz settled into his seat at the table and waited until Inej poured his drink before taking a sip. He was curious. Kaz, for the most part, had a simple existence, but he wasn’t above making it complicated for the right price.
Kaz took a few bites from his plate. It was delicious. Inej was talented in many fields, including cooking. The background music playing was pleasant and completely normal to them both. He set down his fork and folded his hands on the table before looking over at his wife.
“Tell me what you heard today, lovely. I am curious.”
After she made sure that Kaz had eaten some and had a few drinks from his glass, she put her own glass down. She was pretty sure that he would be interested in this kind of news and she took no note of how the background music changed.
“There is a new club opening downtown. Apparently, they’re looking for employees, including a manager.” She gave him a sweet smile that had mischief dancing in her eyes. “From what I understand, most people are hesitant to apply for a job there because of the area it is located in and the people in charge.” She ran her finger around the rim of her glass. “I was thinking that it could be a very interesting diversion.”
If any other woman looked at him like that, Kaz wouldn’t have given the expression a second thought. With Inej, the expression was captivating, but Kaz was talented at compartmentalising. He listened and kept his eyes and ears on her. The job always came first; pleasure was for after the hard work was accomplished.
Kaz pondered her words, tossing around the implications of such a move, before responding. “I’m growing rather bored of my current line of work. I think this sounds like the kind of change I need and it could prove useful. With the owners busy trying to find willing workers, you and I can see if there is anything worth putting our hands on.” Kaz replied. He reached across the table and took her hand, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “Wonderful find, my darling.” If he took a job there, it would give him inside access and a means in which they could do what they did best: steal.
She squeezed his hand, smiling. When she had found out about the club this afternoon, she had known that it was just the thing to share with her husband. This new club has so much potential for them and she was looking forward to checking out the place with Kaz.
“I’m glad you are happy with the idea,” she said with a grin. “Besides, a bored Kaz is an unhappy Kaz and I never want to see my beloved husband unhappy.”
As if on cue, the background soundtrack had to give its opinion.
“Awwwww….”
Of course Inej knew exactly what would make him happy. The potential this new club provided was the exact thing Kaz needed to brighten his mood. Well, as much as Kaz’s mood could ever truly be brightened. Tomorrow, they would go and see what the place had to offer.
“As I never wish to see you unhappy either, my darling.” Of course the soundtrack let out an “Awwww,” but Kaz was accustomed to all of it by now. He gave her hand a final squeeze before turning back to his plate.
“Let’s finish dinner and then we can plan some more. I want to see it tomorrow.” The wheels in Kaz’s mind were already turning, trying to put the pieces of a potential scheme together.
