Who: Eve Levine, Foggy Nelson, and Matt Murdock What: Foggy meets Eve When: January 1. Evening. Where: Off Broadway Taproom Rating: lowish
Matt suggested Foggy and Eve meet at the Off Broadway Taproom, since it involved nothing fancy, tasty burgers, and beer. If nothing else, the trio could agree on those three things. While Matt could clean up well, he didn’t prefer to do so. Thus, the decision of Off Broadway. Plus, Matt could really go for their barbecue sauce on a burger with bacon.
He got an Uber and made his way to the restaurant, and walked inside, sensing whether or not Eve and Foggy already arrived, before making his way to a booth, telling the server he’d order when the other two arrived.
Eve didn’t do ‘nervous’ most of the time and this was not one of those times. This was Matt and his friend and from what Matt had told her about Foggy, he was a good guy. Besides, either he’d accept the huge ass sword seemingly magnetically attached to her back or he wouldn’t. Of course, she tried to be strategic enough to get there first to avoid some of the awkwardness.
Well, she got there second. Same thing, she supposed.
“Been waiting long?” She asked Matt as she rested the sword against the table edge and took her seat. “Are you and Foggy more a sit side-by-side pair of friends or do you want me to change spots so I’m beside you?”
“We’re the side-by-side pair of friends,” Foggy said, as he arrived at the Off Broadway Taproom shortly after Eve. “Don’t you dare try to sit by my friend.” He grinned at Eve, and offered her his hand. “I assume you’re the Eve I’ve heard so much about.” He seemed rather unphased by the sword that was resting against the side of the table. It wasn’t the strangest thing he’d ever seen.
Foggy honestly didn’t care where he sat, so when Eve had chosen her spot, he slid into the spot beside Matt. Solely because he figured Matt would be more comfortable sitting beside him than Eve would. Seeing as he’d known Matt for far longer than he’d known Eve.
Seeing as he just met Eve.
“Hello, Matt,” he said, greeting his friend.
He greeted his girlfriend with his patented grin. “You look great. No. I only arrived here a couple minutes ago.” Matt sensed her nerves. “He’ll love you.”
Matt couldn’t help his chuckle that Foggy declared the pair as side-by-side friends. Although, Matt knew they spent a lot of time beside each other. “Yes, I’m sure her ultimate goal is to dare come between us,” he joked. The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen hadn’t expected Foggy to be phased by the gigantic sword.
“Hello Foggy.”
Well, she liked him already.
“I am. Nice to meet you Foggy. You came at the right time of the year to meet me.” She glanced to Matt not that they could do any sort of sharing-of-expressions like other people could. That was fine, really. She learned now to read his facial expressions in most situations. Eve just wasn’t sure how much Matt had said about her situation. Seeing as it was a part of her that wasn’t going away any time soon, she decided to explain. She doubted Matt was the sort to want to keep something like that a secret.
“Half the year I’m a ghost and it can make socializing hard sometimes, as you can imagine.” Even with her mastery over manifesting, there were limits. “The Dome saw fit to make me whole during the cold months.”
Her expression to Foggy said, ‘fun, right?’
“That sounds very convenient,” Foggy said, in response to her explanation. “Here, you don’t have to be a ghost all the time, but only when it’s frigid outside. Sounds like a blast.” He then offered Eve a small smile. It was not the strangest thing he’d heard in his life. After all, he lived in a world where people like Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones existed.
He could handle Eve.
“Can people see you when you’re a ghost?” he asked, curious. “That has to be a drag.” He couldn’t imagine having to be a ghost half of the year. He didn’t think he could handle it.
He then side-eyed Matt. “She may want to come between us, Matt, you’ll never know. She’ll become your new best friend and then where will you be? You’ll have no one to translate Punjabi for you.”
Matt didn’t plan on answering for Eve, obviously. Though, he felt glad that Eve and Foggy seemed to be getting along and Foggy didn’t feel phased by the sword or her life as a part-time ghost person.
“If someone becomes my best friend besides you, assume I’ve lost my memories,” he joked. There was only one best friend for Matt Murdock: Foggy Nelson. “Though, I’m sure Savannah could learn enough Punjabi to help like she has with Braille.” Matt mostly kidded. “Though I’d be sad without you, Fog.”
It was clear these two were good friends and Eve was happy that Matt had someone from home again he was close to. She knew his other friend Jessica had left. “So you speak different languages then Foggy?” Eve didn’t know a lot of other languages, but it wasn’t like she ever needed to. She didn’t feel compelled to learn now either, though she had pride for her daughter who was learning more.
“Are you the one who is the common sense between you two or does that fall to Matt?” She assumed Foggy was since Matt was a lot more like her. She figured Foggy would play a similar role to Trsiel… though Foggy probably had less holier than thou moments.
Foggy gasped softly at Matt’s words, “You would let Savannah take over my Punjabi translating skills? I am offended, Matt Murdock.” He grinned a bit at his best friend as he spoke, clearly kidding. He then focused on Eve for a moment, his head tilting slightly. “Funny story, really. I took Punjabi because of a pretty girl. I wanted to impress her. …I came out of the class actually being able to read and speak Punjabi yet without the girl.”
He actually took a moment to consider Eve’s next question. He would usually jump on the chance to claim he had the most common sense out of the two of them. But he found he wanted to be honest with Matt’s girlfriend. She was important to Matt, and therefore important to Foggy.
“I have my moments,” he said. “Just like Matt has a lack of common sense at times. We tend to even each other out in that area – sometimes it’s me, sometimes it’s him.”
“No. I wouldn’t. Promise,” Matt said, only partly joking, though he took promises, especially with Foggy, rather seriously. “He actually sounded pretty good speaking Punjabi.”
Matt appreciated that Foggy told the truth. “Who has the most common sense really depends on the situation.” After all, as far as Matt knew, Foggy never ended up half dead in a dumpster.
“Fair enough.” Eve liked the answer. It made sense. Though for her partnership it was mostly one-sided. Except for that one time. It probably had something to do with hers being an angel, though thankfully he was the coolest angel. “I guess I’ll get to find out when the Dome pulls another one of its tricks.” A half-joke.
“How about we order some food and you two can tell me how you met?” Eve wanted to get to know Foggy since Foggy was important to Matt and Matt was important to Eve.
