Alex: He'd gone out since coming to Madison, to a few bars with coworkers, to dinner with Henry a couple times, on his own personal food tour but he hadn't been dancing. Back home he would have called Nora and dragged her and the Secret Service to one of the clubs in Georgetown where the college kids partied and just got lost in the music and the crowd.
Tonight he really just wanted to get lost with Henry.
Dating was good. It was great to have this time to figure out what a relationship might look like out in the open. But the self imposed speed at which the relationship was progressing was making things hard. Innuendo intended. He knew he looked good when he got to the club where he was meeting Henry, in jeans and a black tank under a long sleeve shirt.
He was going to get his majesty the prince of no rhythm on the dance floor if it killed him.
Henry: Henry actually liked being dominated in a sort of way. When Alex had told him that there was practically getting out of going, they were going dancing. Henry didn’t do dancing but he had the urge to just submit and listen. It was kind of hot.
Henry of course still wanted to take things slow but things were really starting to build and Henry was reluctant to up their relationship even though he practically wanted to jump his bones .
Getting the name of the club, he walked in. He wasn’t wearing a tie but he was wearing a polo shirt along with some khaki pants. He entered the club and went in search of Alex. Finding him after a few moments, he went up to him. “Hello Alex.” Was all that he could get out.
Alex: "Henry," Alex grinned and shook his head when he saw Henry, he looked good, he always looked good - even covered in cake he'd looked good. But a polo shirt at a dance club?
"I should have been more specific about the clothes," impulsively he placed a smacking kiss to the blondes cheek and grabbed his hand to drag him to the bar. "What are you drinking? Martini?"
Henry: Seeing Alex grin was always the highlight. He enjoyed just dating Alex, they had been having fun and Henry hoped he was proving that he could be the person for Alex. He was in a club so it had to prove something.
“You said no tie. And I am not wearing a tie. What’s wrong with a polo and khaki pants? You seriously have a problem with my wardrobe don’t you?” He said laughing. Letting Alex drag him to the bar. “Yes, a martini sounds great.”
Alex: "I love your wardrobe about 90% of the time." Even if it did tend toward the more formal side of things, they'd had to put him in Alex's clothes at that karaoke bar in Texas just so he hadn't stood out. He leaned in to order a martini and an old fashioned and then turned back to Henry.
"The other 10% of the time I would honestly prefer you without clothes so I guess its fine." And here if anyone noticed him and recognized them it didn't matter. So, so what if Henry stood out from the crowd.
Henry: “I don’t exactly HAVE clothes like you do. I only have clothes that make me look professional. I mean I do have lounge clothes but they aren’t suitable for clubs.” He said looking at him as Alex ordered there drinks. “At least I’m not wearing a tie.” He smirked at him.
“Well, duly noted. I’ll have to remember that then.” He said with a smile on his face. “I have never been to a club like this before. I mean the only actual dance event was your NYE party.”
Alex: “I don’t have all that many clothes here really,” he’d arrived with literally a change of underwear and a clean shirt. He’d had to buy some things for work, and for working out and if he was honest, for going out with Henry.
“I love places like this,” he handed the bartender a card to keep a tab when he brought their drinks and handed Henry his martini before sipping his own. “Loud, anonymous, just the music and the beat and the crowd. It’s like that bar we went to, no one cares enough to know who you are. They’re here to dance.”
Henry: "Neither do I. I had to get the essentials for work. I do need to go shopping for more than suits and polos. It's just that with my teaching job, I have to look professional." He said shrugging his shoulders. Though he did need t-shirts and comfortable pants. He did have sweats and under shirts for pajamas.
"Yeah, I did love that bar. That night was really fun, except for the massive hangover the next morning from all the tequila shots. So I was grateful you let me sleep in." He said with a chuckle. "But, you know I look like a wet noodle when I dance, so I don't know if that is going to happen tonight."
Alex: “I miss my closet almost as much as I miss my folks and Nora,” he admitted with a laugh, took another swallow of his drink. “We should go shopping for our next date.”
It might be hot watching Henry try on clothes, like Pretty Woman.
“I thought about staying in bed all day, but figured my dad might have something to say about that,” and at the time he hadn’t been entirely sure where his dad had come down on the whole ‘my son is bisexual’ thing. “I’ll get you out on the dance floor somehow.”
Henry: “Oh? A shopping date? I could go for that. I do need to add on to my wardrobe here.” He said with a smile on his face. He liked this, just simply dating the guy that he really liked.
“All parents do. I would get woken up by all these palace officials in the mornings or by David” he said laughing.
“I think that’s up for debate.” He said smirking. “I do like the music though. And it looks like you have a few admirers too. They are not making it discreet either.” He said laughing as he took a sip from his martini.
ALex: "Shopping date it is," he glanced over at where Henry had looked having not really noticed that he might have acquired any admirers. There were two women obviously eyeing him and the blonde and a little farther off a dark haired guy who was possibly less subtle about the eye he was giving him.
"I think those women are looking at both of us." He drained his drink and smirked at Henry. "Which one do you want me to dance with? Since you won't dance with me."
Henry: "We can get dinner afterwards and make it a proper date." He said with a grin on his face. He then was seeing the women and the men just eyeing them. "We must be some pretty good eye candy. Or maybe they are just all staring at you." Trying his best to flirt, even though he was terrible at it.
"You really think so? Well, I hope that they know that I am not interested." He said as he finished his first martini and then asked for another one. So that sort of made him a little bit jealous, but he wasn't about to show it on his face. "I don't know.....maybe that one on the left. But, if she touches you in any sort of way...." He trailed off and went back to sip his martini.
Alex: "Hey," he leaned in close, eyes dark and intense. "You know I'm not interested in anything but a dance either. Right?"
She would probably touch him in some sort of way, but he got what Henry meant. "I'm not going home with her."
Okay he wasn't going home with Henry either but that wasn't the point.
Henry: "I know...I was just simply saying. If I have to come and save you because some girl is thinking she has a shot at you....I will." He said, wanting so badly to kiss him just to prove a point, but he didn't.
"I should hope not. Especially when you are here with me." And even though after tonight they would go their separate ways, he really hated that they lived in separate places. Maybe he could change that with one of his Christmas gifts.
"Go dance, I know that you want to. And I'll be here waiting and I'll make sure that you don't get dehydrated." He said as he pecked Alex on his cheek.
Alex: "I'll just tell her my boyfriend doesn't dance," his smile was warm as he stepped back, fingers trailing along Henry's collar. "Or that you like to watch."
He smirked and winked as he turned toward the women and walked over to talk to them. He did in fact tell them his boyfriend didn't dance, but was soon moving out onto the dance floor with both of them. He was too much of a gentleman to stare at Henry as they danced, but he did glance at him periodically obviously enjoying the music and the crowd.
Henry: "Oh so we're officially boyfriends huh? I do like that we are at that level." He smirked and he felt goosebumps starting to appear on his skin when Alex touched him. He then wanted to prove a point and he at this point he just didn't care. He pulled Alex to him and kissed him. After he released Alex he smiled. "Now they know." He patted his chest. "Go have fun. And just to compromise. If it's a song that I think I can dance to, I'll owe you one. Since that's why we're here."
Watching him dance with both of the women made him smile. Alex looked like he was living his best life. He stood at the bar and leaned back on it sipping his martini. He was bopping his head to the music. He would look at Alex every once in a while and give him a smirk.
Alex: One song turned into two, and the guy who'd been eyeing him half joined the trio on the dance floor getting a little closer than was comfortable. Alex shifted away, shook his head and le the guy know he was only interested in a dance which Henry could probably see even if he heard none of it over the music.
Then as the third song started Alex ducked away and went back to the bar. He'd been flying since Henry had kissed him, even that light brush of his lips a thrill. He gestured at the bartender and at their glasses and held up two fingers when he got back to the bar, the guy nodded and started to mix their drinks.
"How many martinis do you think it will take to get you to dance with me? Just one and we can discuss going to eat instead if you really hate it here."
Henry: Watching them closely, he noticed that more people were surrounding Alex and the other women. Was a guy trying to make a pass at him? Should he go over and just pretend that he knew what he was doing with dancing just to be close to Alex? He didn't know, but then he saw him not take the advances. He looked over and another man at the bar was trying to buy him a drink and he shook his head and held up his glass already.
Seeing Alex coming over to the bar and ordering more drinks. He tipped back the glass to finish up his other martini. He was feeling the vodka and it was going to his head a little bit. He did trust Alex, and it was proven when he didn't go and beat the guy up trying to make a pass at him.
He put his arm around Alex. "Well, maybe a couple more. How about a couple shots as well." He put his fingers up for 2 shots of tequila. "I'm sorry if you feel like I am a drag. I am trying though. And you have been patient all night. So how about after the shots and drinks, I'll go out to the dance floor with you. I don't hate it here by the way."
Alex: "You're not a drag, I wanted to spend time with you and I wanted to dance. I'm getting both." The bartender brought a new martini, Alex's old fashioned and two tequila shots with lime.
He licked his wrist, added salt and held up his shot to toast before licking the salt clean, and swallowing it down followed by a wedge of lime. Then he slid an arm around Henry, as he sipped his other drink, they were comfortable together, and touching in private but this was still new.
Henry: "Yeah? Well, you did look great out there and it is just not the martini's talking either. The last couple of times that we did go out, like your NYE party and then the bar in Texas, I never really went out to places like that. But, I am getting that I need to get out of my comfort zone every once in a while."
Taking his drink, he practically downed it. Then he put salt on his wrist, licked it, took the shot of tequila and then ate the lime. When Alex slid his arm around him, he smiled. He felt comfortable being touched by him in public. The song changed and he put down Alex's glass and grabbed his hands. "I do owe you a dance."
Alex: "You only have to get out of your comfort zone if you want to," he gave the hands in his a squeeze and touched his forehead to Henry's.
Then he let himself be led back out onto the dance floor, the song had a solid beat but wasn't too fast which meant a bob and sway would be appropriate so he wrapped his arms around Henry and started to move.
Henry: The music was going and Henry felt comfortable enough to just sway as he put his forehead on Alex's and just let the music guide him. He didn't want to screw up this night and it wasn't all that bad. It was the high thumping music that was going to get Henry into trouble because of course he looked like a wet noodle. Which made him laugh.
As they were dancing, he pressed his lips to Alex. "I don't even know if we will make it to New Years Eve." He laughed. "But, the more I think about it, the more I know that it is going to be worth the wait."
Alex: “Anticipation makes it hotter,” they’d make it, hell they’d gone actual weeks between seeing each other back home. Even if it might be uncomfortable, particularly when Henry was this close.
“Our anniversary.” Of sorts. Henry was a better dancer than he thought he was, Alex’s hands going to his hips as the music changed so they moved with his.
Henry: "It is a tough challenge to get through. Thank god that I have a job that requires a lot of grading papers and syllabus and assignments, plus having a ward in the home as well to keep me busy so I'm not even thinking about it." He said as he started to feel the effects of the alcohol and loved just embracing Alex.
"So you still consider NYE as our anniversary? Even if we have broken up for a little bit?" He said with a sly smile. "I actually like that." He said as he put his forehead against Alex's and closed his eyes and just swayed, moving to a faster pace and letting Alex be in the lead.
Alex: "Even if its not exactly our anniversary," and he's not sure when would be. They might have to restart that clock a few times. "It's the first time you kissed me."
His bisexual awakening, with fireworks and starlight. He couldn't think of a better thing to celebrate. He let his forehead drop to Henry's as they danced, one song turning into two, then three completely oblivious to the rest of the crowd and the looks they might be getting.
Henry: "That is true. Are you one that celebrates all the milestones. I've heard that is a thing. First date, first kiss, etc." He said with a smile. "I mean if you are, I won't judge you for it or anything. You'll just have to remind me so that I can make sure to know and do something special for it."
Henry was looking and seeing many people just watching them. Particularly the women and the guy that was dancing with Alex earlier and the man that tried to buy Henry a drink. "Hey, so we're dancing and holding each other in public. I think that's a huge step for me. But wait, I take that back, kissing you in front of everyone is a huge step for me." He said as he continued to dance and there was song after song after song. Henry felt the sweat start to drip. Okay so the polo shirt was a bad idea.
Alex: "Not all the milestones. But I figure we need an anniversary. It's up for debate but we didn't really have a traditional relationship before now, our first date was a state dinner where we spent all of five minutes together before you snuck into my bedroom. Or it was a trip to a children's hospital for a photo op."
And that was why he was wearing a tank top, though he was pretty sweaty too by the time he pulled Henry back to the bar.
"How about we have one more drink and then I'll walk you home."
Henry: "Well, I sort of like how our first kiss could be our anniversary. It was when I was telling you that I had feelings for you in my own way. Or we could wipe the slate clean and this NYE can be the starting point and we go from there." He said shrugging his shoulders.
Following Alex, he wiped the sweat from his forehead as he took a glass of water and nearly downed it. This was a fun night and he didn't embarrass himself with his dancing either.
Henry nodded, "Yeah, I should get some sleep anyway. I have a few classes to teach and I really don't want to go in hungover. Plus, with Charlie home by himself, I know he's probably okay but I shouldn't be out too late." Wow, look at him talking like an actual adult. "I really did or well, still having a good time."
Alex: "A fresh start," he liked that idea. He had his own glass of water, and paid their tab before slipping his card back into his wallet.
"Let's get you home before curfew then," he grinned, because it was sweet the way Henry worried. A+ adulting. Though Alex figured the kid was probably fine, he was a teenager - the things Alex had gotten up to at fifteen didn't bear repeating.
Henry: "Yes, a fresh start. I mean, it's already starting out great. We're out here, in public holding each other. I think I turned over a new leaf." He said looking at him and intertwining their fingers.
"I completely forgot that today is Saturday. I don't teach on Sundays. How about you come over tomorrow for brunch? Unless you think that tonight is enough of seeing each other and we can do shopping and dinner perhaps on Wednesday? I don't teach on that day." He said as he drank another glass of water and then took Alex by the hand so they could head out.
Alex: "I could be talked into brunch," and shopping midweek. It was nice being able to see Henry more often than they used to manage when they would go weeks, or longer between visits.
He kept Henry close as they walked, fingers tangled and shoulders bumping.
"I work Wednesday, but could take a half day." All he was doing was research.
Henry: “Good. I actually am learning and can make a men’s quiche.” He said smiling over at him. This was really nice and they were walking in public and holding hands. This was exactly what Henry wanted for his life.
He tangled his fingers with Alex’s and just kept walking. “This was really nice. And in all honesty, I’m glad that you dragged me out.” He said with a chuckle.
“And yeah, that will work. It’ll give me time to work on assignments and readings for my classes.” He liked this whole dating Alex thing and it was working for them.
Alex: "Anything I can bring for brunch?" he brought their clasped hands up so he could brush a kiss across Henry's knuckles. "Fruit? Juice? Breakfast meats?"
That last one was only sort of meant to be innuendo.
"And I'm glad you agreed to go dancing, I didn't want to go alone." Though he could probably have gotten Sav or Foggy to come with him.
Henry: “you could bring fruit and of course you could always bring some massive sausages.” He said with a wink.
He swung their hands and placed a kiss on Alex’s lips.
“Yeah, we will have to do it again some other time. I didn’t mind it at all. This was a great date night.”
Alex: "I figured I should plan some of them, so it's not all on you making this relationship thing happen." Alex had let Henry do a lot of the planning, probably subconsciously seeking assurance that Henry really want this, to be out, to be with him. Not that he'd admit that even if he was aware of it.
"Besides, I'm the only one of us who has even the faintest idea of what dating in the real world looks like." He teased with a laugh.
Henry: "How about we plan date days and nights together. And if we want to surprise each other, we will just let the other one know." He said with a smile on his face. As they continued to walk back to Henry's house, he just held Alex's hand tightly.
"I mean, you aren't wrong. But, I do get to do it here with you. And I like it, holding hands, kissing and holding you." He sighed, he really didn't want the night to end but knew that Alex would be back for brunch the next morning. "Thank you for being patient and everything else. You make me smile daily. I know it sounds really corny." He said with a chuckle.
Alex: He liked it too. Like how normal it felt. Liked being anonymous. Just Alex and Henry.
"You don't need to thank me." He paused on the front walk and pulled Henry toward him so he could kiss him lightly on the lips. It was not easy to pull away, but it was the right thing for them right now and he pressed his forehead to the other mans. "And I like when you're corny."
Henry: This was as normal as it was going to get. And Henry was enjoying it all.
“No….I need to thank you. If it weren’t for you. I wouldn’t be my true self and being happy.” He said as he returned the kiss. Closing his eyes as they had their foreheads pressed together and he laughed. “I’m glad that you enjoy my corniness. I’ll remember that from now on.”
Alex: “Don’t give me all the credit, you did this yourself.” Maybe Alex was a catalyst but he couldn’t imagine Henry living a lie forever even if he’d never met him.
He kissed him again, still light but a with a little more heat than the first one before he forced himself to step away.
“I will see you tomorrow.”
Henry: “Let’s say 50/50 then.” He said chuckling a bit. It was Henry that made the ultimate choice and he was happy with his decision.
Returning the kiss and when they pulled away he nodded. “See you tomorrow. Text me when you get to your place. So I know that you made it safely.”
He then went inside and shut the door.
Alex: Alex waited until the door closed behind Henry to turn away and start walking home. It wasn’t too far so soon he was in his own bedroom, texting.
*Made it home safely. Goodnight sweetheart.*
