Who: Eve, Matt, and Savannah What: Thanksgiving dinner When: Thanksgiving Where: Sav’s house Rating:low
Savannah didn’t really want to be by herself in this overly large house. Even worse for her, though, would have been remaining in the house Adam bought with the previous girlfriend without Adam. She still felt anger towards Vasic for his actions and then leaving, wondering if she’d be less angry if he hadn't kept pushing her away for the first fourish months of her living here.
But tonight was Thanksgiving and she’d invited her mom and Matt to join her. Savannah would see Sean, Alex, her father etc at a different point, but tonight she really just wanted an evening with her mom and her mom’s boyfriend, especially since she rarely saw Matt outside of work.
Since Savannah couldn’t cook, she’d asked around until she found a place which would cook a traditional Thanksgiving meal: turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato soufflé, cranberry orange sauce, stuffing, green vegetables, and two pies. She’d set out some pretty dishware, and did one last glance to ensure nothing would be in Matt’s way when he made his way to the table.
Matt’s nerves started earlier in the day. He not only had dinner with his girlfriend planned for Thanksgiving, but her daughter decided to host. No matter that Matt saw Savannah at work since she was the law firm assistant (and helped him a lot with Braille translation), this was a different setting and not one with which he had familiarity. He wished, not for the first time, that Jess still resided in Madison, because she would have rolled her eyes, passed him a whiskey and just been Jess about it.
He’d agreed to get a cab and stop at Eve’s first and ordered a cab to take him to the place. Matt could walk, obviously, but he didn’t possess super speed and would prefer to not look rumpled when he arrived.
Finally the cab pulled up to Eve’s and he texted. Hopefully he looked alright in his suit, but Matt didn’t really own clothes that weren’t for working out or for work. Plus, this way, he knew what was actually in his closet.
Eve was nervous as well, but only because this was new territory for her. She knew Savannah liked Matt and she had everyone’s blessing to pursue this, but she had zero experience with family dinners with a boyfriend as an adult with her adult daughter. At least no one would care that she had a giant sword on her back and Savannah didn’t have a toddler where they’d have to worry about them getting hurt.
Her jeans and t-shirt were traded for a dress tonight. She had particularly come to enjoy dresses with Matt as they made taking off far easier most of the time. When she got the text, she grabbed the bottle of wine and joined Matt in the cab.
“You look good. I like your hair.” She often had the urge to run her hands through it and mess it up, but she could refrain from doing that for a few hours. “Paige says hello, but I told her she wasn’t allowed to walk me to the car.” She was mostly kidding, her tone humorous.
Savannah knew what her mother drank by this point and had some ready for Eve. Unlike most people and hors d'oeuvres, Savannah went for mozzarella sticks, veggies and dip, and Paige’s cookies, which, in her opinion, were delicious at any time of day. If the Dome ever sent Paige home, she’d cry from being without said cookies.
She finally heard the door and hurried to let in the pair.
During the drive to Savannah’s (which didn’t take too long), Matt laughed. “I’m glad Paige decided to trust you enough to get into a cab with me,” he joked. “I also say hi.” Yes, he appreciated dresses when it came to sex. Not that he couldn’t remove jeans and t-shirts, but the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen certainly fumbled with some buttons (even did with his own shirts at times).
“What colour is your dress?” he asked as he paid the cab driver and held out an arm so Eve could help him to the front door, even while he could make it without any difficulty. When Sav answered the door, he stepped aside so Eve could greet her daughter first.
“Bright yellow.” She was kidding and was making reference to her April costume almost a month ago. She then amended her statement with. “Mahogany. It looks great on me.” Eve was smiling to herself as she knocked on the door and Savannah opened.
She greeted her daughter and hugged her. “You look good. And so does the house. If you’re hoping to put up lights this year, I volunteer Sean for you. I’m sure he’d do a good job.” Eve was going to make sure Savannah didn’t feel alone this Christmas, even if it killed her.
Eve closed the door behind them. Instead of introducing Matt - since they worked together - Eve went with - “We brought wine.”
Matt huffed out a laugh at Eve’s obvious joke. Man, that whole night of Hallowe’en had been strange, even more so when he could actually see his girlfriend, but not realize Eve was his girlfriend. “Of course it looks good on you. I can’t see the colour, but I can make out your figure in the dress.” And Matt knew how attractive Eve was, so he assumed even in a paper bag she’d look out of this world divine.
“Thanks for inviting us, Savannah,” he commented once Eve and Sav finished greeting each other. Matt could probably hang lights, but nobody needed him to try. “I’m sure the house looks fantastic.”
Savannah took the bottle of wine and returned her mother’s hug. “Thanks, Mom. I like this house more than the previous one.” Mostly since this one came without the baggage of Adam’s house with Llew.
“I thought I’d bribe Sean, Alex, and Nick. But yes, I finished shopping for Christmas decorations, so I just need to actually decorate.” The witch even bought a cute 6ft fake tree that looked snow covered. The gold lights would look fantastic.
“Sorry, Matt, I don’t know what you like to drink outside of your black coffee order with a shot of espresso. But can I get you two drinks?” For her part, Sav had a Mexican beer on the table.
“I’d love a drink. Whatever you have. I’m not picky.” Eve could pretend to have discerning tastes if she needed to blend in with people who thought that was a necessary trait to be successful in life, but Eve was really a simple person. It was probably why nine times out of ten her daughter was always dressed nicer than her. And Eve was okay with that.
After getting her drink, Eve found a seat. “Not sure if this is exactly Thanksgiving conversation, but I’ve been playing with an idea and I figured I’d run it by both of you first. And since you’re both here at the same time, it saves me having to repeat myself.” She took a sip of her drink. “I was thinking of starting up a coven here. There’s enough witches. I’m not sure why there isn’t one already, really.”
Matt responded to Savannah. “I’ll take a beer? I’m not picky.” Given that Matt didn’t exactly work as a lawyer to make money, he didn’t possess discerning tastes either. “But yes, I do love a good red eye.” With a splash of whatever milk because again, Matt didn’t care.
“Oh and water, please.” The last thing he needed was to get buzzed in this situation. And while Matt had a good tolerance…he was still a human.
He used his stick and found his way next to Eve. Since Matt didn’t know much about witchcraft, outside of what Eve and Savannah told him, he thought it best to drink the beer handed to him while the two women spoke. Once Sav mentioned the food options and where on the coffee table he could find them, Matt helped himself to a few bites. “I don’t feel like it’s my place to weigh in on this conversation, but if it’s what you want, then obviously I’ll support you.” Matt leaned over and kissed Eve’s cheek before he took a bite of a mozzarella stick.
Sav passed along the drinks and watched as Matt and her mom settled on the couch. They looked good together, and while she’d always slightly wish her father got his head out of his ass, she couldn’t help the happiness for her mom.
She didn’t look surprised at her mom’s announcement, but if given the option, she’d expect this conversation with Paige instead, given Paige’s experiences back home. “I think a coven makes sense. Are you thinking of including men too? Or just female witches?” Savannah thought it might be nice to make Kol an honorary member too, given his background and knowledge.
“Therein lies one of the bigger questions and why I wanted to talk to you first.” Eve had been thinking about it for a while, but it wasn’t like she had a lot of experience back home. The experience she did have was negative. She knew here it would be different. Before she brought this to Paige, she wanted to have an outline of what she wanted.
“I don’t think it’d be a problem having men in the coven, even if I know that would make some witches back home faint. But I also don’t want it to come off like I’m trying to start up the Interracial Council from back home either. We don’t really need that here in Madison.” She turned to Matt and explained what the council was back home and why they needed it there.
“Your world has those Avengers right?” Eve was careful not to let on about what she knew of Matt since she had no idea who knew what and it wasn’t her place. “That’s sort of a coven for superheroes. Do you think it would be weird for them to accept other superheroes from other worlds?” This was as close to a comparison Eve could make.
Then she looked at Savannah. “At least I’m pretty sure Paige wouldn’t mind if men were allowed.”
“I think it should be open, especially since witches can be men in other worlds. Like Kol.” He might no longer be a witch, but nobody knew magic the way her friend did. “Besides, fuck the coven back home and their backwards ways.” Savannah felt no lost love for those who’d treated Paige badly for taking in Savannah. “I think we could open it up to magic users? Interracial would include werewolves or half-demons like Hope. But magic users seems welcoming. I’d probably invite Kol too because of his in-depth knowledge. He can be our token former witch,” the brunette joked. “If Paige has an issue including men and nonbinary people, she’ll have to deal with my whining.”
Matt considered the question, and took a sip of his beer. “Nah. Superheroes from other worlds exist after all, like…” he paused, trying to recall the name. “Barry? At the end of the day, superheroes have similar experiences.” Savannah rolled her eyes. “Yes, Matt is a superhero. And can kind of see. I’d be a terrible assistant if I didn’t pick up on these things.”
Well then. Hell’s Devil couldn’t help laughing. “Guess that’s not a secret anymore.” He cared less and less the longer he lived here, especially with the arrival of Foggy. Which reminded him he’d need to introduce Eve to Foggy. “I’m not hiding it like I was. People here don’t care and with Foggy, I don’t want to hide things from people anymore.” But he really missed Jess.
Eve looked surprised for a moment, then her expression softened and she laughed. “I’m not sure why I thought you wouldn’t catch on. You are my daughter, after all.” It did admittedly feel a bit simpler now that Savannah admitted knowing. It wasn’t that Eve felt like she was hiding anything from her daughter, but generally Eve hated tiptoeing around subjects. “Well good, now I can get Matt that ‘best Superhero ever’ mug I was eyeing in the store.” She joked.
“But now you’re going to have to tell us when you figured it out because I’m dying to know.” Eve sort of wanted to then compare it to the rest of their friends to see who figured it out last. She reached over and squeezed Matt’s hand briefly, smiling.
Matt also wanted to know and listened, curiosity evident on his face.
