Who: Raelle and Rory What: A Date When: Evening Where: The Fair Rating: low
Raelle couldn’t remember the last time she’d been to a fair except that she was ‘young’ and it was when her mother was still alive. It felt like another lifetime ago. She was excited to go and even more excited to be on a date with Rory. At some point in the last month, Raelle realized that she had stopped mourning the loss of Scylla. It wasn’t like she forgot her completely, but Raelle realized that here? She was happy with Rory. It was a strange feeling to have, but also one that made things feel lighter on her shoulders.
“These deep fried Oreos are way more delicious than they’re allowed to be.” She took another bite and enjoyed the way it was melted in the middle. “I don't know how I’m ever going to be able to eat regular Oreos again.”
Rory didn’t go to fairs back home. Probably her mother took her to one, but she’d been busy with work. So usually Rory spent time with her aunts. Who, while wonderful, were not the fair type people. She should check in on her Auntie Eve, actually.
Lucifer’s daughter couldn’t imagine a life without Raelle in it. Even as just friends, although Rory preferred their step past friendship.
She laughed at her girlfriend eating the deep fried Oreo. “I’m glad I feel secure in our relationship or I might envy the cookie. But for real, that’s how I feel about the deep fried Snickers. The Oreo tasted nice, but it’s not the same.” Rory could do many things for Raelle, but she didn’t think deep frying Oreos was in her future. “Maybe we should open a shop and we only sell deep fried fair food.” Mostly she joked.
She flashed a grin to Rory at her joke at feeling envy before she took another bite. Raelle had to wonder if she’d ever get to do something like this back home. She had a sinking feeling the answer would be ‘no’.
“That actually sounds delicious. And I have no idea why someone hasn’t done that already. I mean, you have your main course and dessert options all there and they’d all taste good. Though I’m still not sure how they deep fry milk or butter.” She’d seen the booth for it and hadn’t had the nerve to try some. “I’d say magic, but I don’t think I’m capable of doing that.” Deep fried poisonous mushrooms, maybe.
“Oh hey -” She finished up her last bite, wiped her hands and tossed the empty carton in a nearby bin. Then she pointed to a building that said ‘Fun House’. “Think it’s actually fun?”
Rory grinned at Raelle. She loved these relaxed times the two of them shared.
“I’m going to skip out on deep fried butter. That sounds like a terrible thing to do to butter.” The half-angel shrugged, finishing her treat. “Right? The menu practically writes itself.” While she fully believed in Raelle’s capabilities, she didn’t think deep fried food was in Raelle’s wheelhouse. Maybe Mads’?
“Sure, I’m game.” Rory threw out her garbage and pulled out one of her hand wipes, offering one to Raelle. While she knew she wasn’t a germaphobe, she didn’t enjoy the feel of food residue on her hands.
Raelle took the wipe and did the same with a ‘thank you’. Then they headed for the fun house. “I’m not sure I’ve ever actually been into a fake one before? One that doesn’t have magic, I mean.” She assumed this was a simple carnival one, though maybe she was jinxing it by saying that. “Hopefully we’re not utterly underwhelmed.” She was expecting anything mind blowing, but hopefully it wasn’t just a disco ball and a mirror or something.
“Have you been in a real one?” Rory asked, slightly alarmed. The half-angel nodded at the thank you and started walking towards it. “I visited one with my Auntie Maze and Auntie Eve when I was about five or six? Apparently I found it boring.” Which honestly didn’t surprise Rory that much knowing herself as she did.
“I would like to not be utterly underwhelmed,” Rory agreed. Hands clean she gently took Raelle’s and added a kiss to her knuckles. “Thanks for coming with me.”
She smiled instantly at the kiss in the love-dopey way that only someone who was very fond of another person could. Raelle lightly squeezed her hand in response. “I like doing things with you. Especially when those things aren’t laced with danger.” She was thinking back to the whole mechanical bugs incident. “Though I would like you on my team when shit hits the fan.” She meant it, even if she was flirting with Rory at the same time.
They entered and the weird circus music already started. “Why does it sound like the start of an 80s horror film?” Raelle kind of felt a little on edge, though all they were doing right now was walking through a mirror maze-like thing.
Rory appreciated that smile and would not be taking it for granted anytime soon, thanks. “Aw, I like doing things with you too, the mechanical bugs notwithstanding.” Even if they’d forced the pair to be open about their feelings. “I like having you on my team too.” This time the half-angel kissed her girlfriend’s temple.
“I think you’re giving it too much credit,” Rory commented dryly. “That’s almost an insult to 80’s horror flicks.” As they walked further she added, “I hope nobody with enhanced hearing comes in here or they may literally go crazy from the sounds.”
“I’m not actually sure what kind of music would be better for this now that I’m immersed in it though.” Picturing something like hardcore EDM was weird to her. “Yes, by the way. About the fun house. I’ve been to one where witches had enchantments. So you’d go into a room and you’d see cool things or smell something fun. Nothing too extreme.” From what Raelle could tell, there were worlds where magic was a lot stranger or perhaps more wide with range. Of course, she’d say that while also acknowledging she could make exploding mushroom bombs.
“Okay… I’m actually lost.” She laughed. She’d taken a bit of ‘the lead’ simple due to the size of the hallway, but she’d been paying more attention to Rory than where they were walking.
“None. The answer is none. I’m pretty sure it would just insult music in general.” She winked at Raelle, though. “You’ll have to tell me more about them, because now I’m super curious about the things you’d smell.” Rory stopped and burst out laughing. “Great. I definitely followed you,” she teased.
“Wanna try this direction?” Rory did not possess strong directional skills. But she figured it couldn’t be that big of a fun house?
She laughed at her answer about the music, then she answered the smell question. “Mostly just things kids would like to smell. Cotton candy, cookies, S’mores.” Some people still thought something as innocent as that was evil because it was magic.
“Let’s do it.” Going that way seemed to work for a while and then Raelle picked another location. Eventually they ended up out of the maze and into a room with a bunch of fun house mirrors. Raelle stood in front of one where she was long and thin like some weird alien. “Well that’s a look.” She chuckled.
She listened intently as Raelle answered her questions. “Somehow I think I’d like your version more.”
Rory yelped and landed on her ass at seeing her reflection in one mirror. “Fucking yikes,” she said with a laugh as she stood. “After this I think I need a drink. What say you?” Not that the half-angel planned on rushing Raelle through the mirror part.
The mirrors were fun, but she wasn’t sure she had the mental stamina to linger. Maybe had she been a child, she’d be fascinated how the mirrors changed the way you look. Raelle understood science enough for that particular aspect to wear off.
“A drink sounds good. I wonder if they have anything good around here.” She reached out for Rory’s hand. She was having a good time tonight.
