Entry tags:!closed, !match-up, ~2023 september, ~~~jason grace (oursavinggrace), ~~~shuri (techsavvyshuri)

Who: Shuri and Jason
What: a matchup
When: Sept. 3rd (backdated)
Where: on her way home from work
Rating: low

Shuri finished work a little earlier than usual and decided to walk to the grocery store and pick up ingredients to make dinner for Miles and herself. She'd worked later the last few days, and so she and her ward mostly subsisted on takeout. Delicious takeout, but still.

She pulled out her phone and stopped, off to the side, to type out a grocery list and text Miles to be sure he would be home. Shuri wanted her ward to make some friends after all.

The Wakandan noticed a blonde teen and flipped through her memory. Jason, she thought, although they hadn't really been friends his last time here and her first time here.

Coming to terms with his imminent death had made Jason a bit quieter than he usually was. It was a lot to accept for a teenage boy, even one who was as close with Death as demigods generally were. He hasn't gotten out much at all, not really.

He was heading for the grocery to pick up a frozen pizza for dinner when he saw...Shuri? nearby and raised his hand to wave to her.

"Hey," he said, because it was the polite thing to do.

Shuri knew a lot about death at this point, having lost every member of her family. She knew that had Bucky not be here for her, that she might have drowned in more grief, not having anything on which to focus.

Thankfully with work, friends, and the White Wolf, the Wakandan managed to slowly get past her grief. Not that it didn't always rest in her heart, but somedays it didn't feel accute.

"Hello. It's, Jason right?" she asked with her accented English and a smile on her face.

"Yeah," He answered with a smile. "I think I've seen you around school." He didn't do much other than school, homework, and spending some time with Piper and Leo, so there weren't that many places he could have seen her.

"Are you enjoying the new year?"

He wasn't exactly thrilled about going back to school, but he was a dedicated student and usually got straight A's.

Shuri blinked at the school part, considering she was in her twenties. Of course, she did look young, so that might be part of it. "Probably around town, as I'm not a student," she responded gently, though.

"I'm just doing my work thing these days, but I like my job and work for a friend, so I can't complain. How's the new school year treating you?"

"Oh, sorry," he said with a bit of a blush. He hadn't meant to insult her, he guessed he just wasn't terribly good at guessing someone's age.

"School's fine. I never made it this far back home so it's actually new stuff. Which is good."

He shrugged.

"It's weird going to normal school. I never learned normal things beyond the basics."

Shuri grinned. "Absolutely no problem. I'm not the best at guessing ages either." She wasn't. Especially not white people.

"Oh. You...I'm sorry." The Wakandan didn't really know what to say to that, but she kind of understood. As best as a living person who lost her entire family to death could feel.

"I didn't really go to school past my early teens. It turns out I was smarter than the teachers and I wanted my own lab to conduct research and build things." Shuri grinned, though. "What did you learn?"
