The big blonde Swede gunned down her Mum. Which meant she'd never get an answer to her question. Did she really love Lila? Or was Lila just a tool in her toolbox, to be used and discarded? Lila stuffed her feelings down deep--no time to deal with them now.
Everyone in the barn was staring at the Swede, shocked by his sudden arrival and violent action. But it wouldn't last. He'd try to kill everyone else, or he might flee, or they would attack. However it worked out, Lila needed to not be there. With a briefcase she could take time to figure out how she felt and what she needed to do. She'd have all the time in the world to plan her return to the barn, to save her mother, and get answers--from her and from Diego and his family. Who was telling her the truth? Mum? Diego?
Lila broke out of the freeze first, lunging for the case. Screw Five and his claim that she wasn't cut out to be an assassin. She was moving while everyone else still gawked. She snatched it up, triggered it, and vanished--
--only to reappear in the middle of a two-lane street. Screeching tires and a blaring horn were evidence of just how close she came to getting run over. The driver's angry shouts were barely audible through the windshield, but his gestures got his point across well enough. Lila returned the gesture, then moved to the sidewalk as he raced off, horn blaring again.
Breathing hard and shaking with reaction to her near-death encounter, Lila looked around. She was in some small town. In America, judging by the architecture and signage. But there were oddities. People were using phones that wouldn't be widely available for decades yet. And some of the automobiles flew through the air. Wherever she was, it was not when or where she wanted to be.
Well, that was easily fixed. She reset the briefcase and triggered it. Nothing happened. She tried again, and again, nothing happened. Her heart sank. If the briefcase was fucked, so was she. She'd be trapped here and now, unable to travel. It was while staring around in frustration that Lila noticed something odd about the light and the shadows. A glance upward revealed two suns overhead.
Wherever she was, it wasn't Earth. And that changed everything. "Fuck me."
