Rhys awoke and planned for his usual breakfast: a piece of fruit in granola with yogurt, which mostly tasted like nothing, but kept him full for the morning. Imagine his utter shock when his sliced strawberries tasted like those from home and his yogurt possessed the perfect tartness and tang.
He texted Mads first and asked if she’d like to go on a picnic the following day. Given this seemed Dome influenced, Rhys assumed he had at least one more day of everything tasting delicious.
But tonight after work he wanted an evening with Raelle, where they could enjoy a meal without weird false memories hanging overhead. Plus, they hadn’t hung out much lately.
Raelle had enjoyed her PopTart that morning way too much. She knew she should eat something better, but on occasion she forgot to do the whole feeding yourself thing. Rhy’s text seemed to confirm that it wasn’t some fluke and after having a handful of nuts that also tasted really good, she made up for it later with a salad for lunch.
Needless to say, she was looking forward to some actual food while hanging out with Rhsyand. She swore she was an adult… though maybe barely.
She brought some chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter cookies because she wasn’t sure if Rhys ever had them and if they were going to taste delicious, now was the time to do it. She knocked on the door and waited patiently with a smile. When the door opens, she held out the little box she had. “I brought cookies.”
Rhys was in his 500’s, High Lord of the Night Court, led armies, and still didn’t feel like an adult at times. What did people say these days? Where is an adultier adult? Given that everything tasted delicious, Rhys tried a peanut butter milkshake and a bacon cheeseburger for lunch, with a Greek salad.
For dinner, Rhys made lemon linguine to accompany a roasted chicken, complete with roasted vegetables. While cookies existed back in his world, the High Lord tended to lean towards cakes and pies when it came to desserts.
“I will never turn down cookies from you,” Rhys commented, hugging Raelle briefly. “It’s still so weird to wake up in a new house.” Yes, he’d lived in it for a week, but it still felt weird to him. “But cookies are appreciated, because I didn’t get around to cooking dessert. Do you want an appetizer and a drink first?” Rhys asked as he ushered her inside and shut the door, before gently taking the box of cookies to the kitchen.
She hugged him back and stepped into the house. “It smells delicious - and so far this place looks great. I kind of wonder if we’re on a different planet why all the houses still look like they’re from Earth, but I guess we’d all freak out a little more.” Not that she could figure out what an alien home would look like. Maybe something made entirely of goo?
“I’d love an appetizer and drink first.” She was hungry. At least that was what was good working most of the day. “How’s it been, being able to actually enjoy everything? I’m half tempted to get some foods I don’t normally like to see if they still are good. Like brussel sprouts.”
Rhys snorted. “This place seems so far removed from anything back home. I rather prefer a house that seems familiar…ish.” No house would ever be the Townhouse or House of Wind, but at least Rhys recognized things like stairs, and a refrigerator. “Thank you. I hope you enjoy it.”
He smiled and nodded. “Would you rather have a glass of wine, an Old Fashioned, or a Bloody Mary?” Rhys pulsed out his charcuterie board of an appetizer and brought it to the island, where they could sit and chat. For himself, he made an Old Fashioned, complete with orange and smoked maple bitters. “Honestly? I almost cried in relief. Sometimes I forget how food should taste.” Which…he realized sounded rather sad. “I might get sick from eating all of the food.” The High Lord laughed at the brussel sprouts remark.
“Maybe a Bloody Mary?” She said it before she watched him make the Old Fashion and she was wondering if she made the right choice. Even so, she didn’t say anything more.
“I wonder if we’re able to like, store something we make now and then it’ll taste good later… probably not. The Dome isn’t that nice.” But she decided she’d try, if only for Rhysand.
And then it hit her and she had to resist reaching for her phone to immediately text Rory. However, she decided to share her thought with her friend. “So… if things taste good. Does that mean -” She made a vague hand gesture out in front of her and her tone changed a little to suggest she was talking about something ‘risque’. “Other things taste better too?” She already liked the way Rory tasted, even if that was a bit crass to say out loud, but she wondered if suddenly it’d be something life changing.
Rhys made a Bloody Mary, complete with a pickle, spiced celery, and a couple cubes of cheese. He’d been looking up garnishes and that sounded the tastiest to him. Besides, Rhys could always make his friend a second drink.
“I won’t get my hopes too high, but I will save some just in case.” Unfortunately for the High Lord.
Did Rhys blink and Raelle and then burst out laughing? Yes. The half-Illyrian almost fell over, but thankfully he’d passed Raelle her drink. “I don’t know, but now I feel the need to text Madison after this.” Hey, Raelle brought up the risque topic, not the High Lord. “But, I’ll take food for now if nothing else.”
Raelle was perfectly comfortable with Rhys having a healthy sex life.. It wasn’t like either of them went into the nitty gritty, though the thought made her think back to Tally and Abigail. She pushed the thought of her friends from her mind. They weren’t here and she had gotten ‘used’ to the idea they wouldn’t be here, much like everyone else who were stuck in Madison.
She grinned. “You should.”
She took a sip of the Bloody Mary and admittedly, it was delicious. “So good. And the way you make it is impressive too. I should take some lessons from you. I’m not good at that stuff at all.”
Rhys generally spoke about such things with Cassian and Az, but he’d been separated from his brothers for decades, only returning home briefly before being brought to Madison.
He laughed. “Noted.”
At the compliment, Rhysand looked proud. “Whenever you want to learn some drink or food tips let me know.” He checked the time and they still had about a half hour until dinner would be ready. “I like making drinks, it turns out.”
“I think it’d be cool to know a few of them to show off.” She’d like to try to impress Rory, not that Raelle thought she needed to impress Rory in any grand way. It was one of the things she liked about her girlfriend.
“Maybe you can show me the Old Fashion after I drink this, because that looks so good too.”
