While it seemed that many people had been thrown into some kind of relationship drama, Chloe found herself to be the happiest she had been in a long time. She was married to Sam, and they had just moved into a new house. It needed a bit of work done on it, but it was still theirs - a place they could mold into the perfect home. Since she no longer worked for the police department, Chloe had more free time than she knew what to do with and worked on fixing up the house while Sam was busy at work. DJ had only a half day at school today, and she decided that they would surprise Sam for lunch at work. She had suggested going out to eat somewhere, but since he was working near the water, DJ wanted to sit outside and have a picnic. “Mooooommy, you’re taking too long. I’m going to starve before it’s time to eat.” DJ whined as he circled the kitchen impatiently, head tossed back in defeat. “You will not starve to death, and I told you that you could have a piece of fruit or some peanut butter crackers. Both of which you don’t seem to be interested in.” She replied simply, giving him a look. “I’m almost done anyway,” Chloe added and started packing up the food into the cooler. She grabbed a large tote bag and tossed in the paper goods they would need, along with some chips, fruit, and bread for DJ to feed to the ducks after. She slid the bag over her shoulder, grabbed the cooler, and ushered DJ out to the car, picking up the blanket along the way. It took them only ten minutes to arrive at the work site and once she parked the car, DJ ran out of the car and went in search of Sam. “Daddy! Daddy! We’re here!” He shouted gleefully, careful not to get in anyone’s way. Chloe just sighed and grabbed the stuff out of the car before following behind him, waiting for Sam to join them. She remained a safe distance and waved in his direction before blowing him a kiss. Sam had heard a little about some drama concerning relationships people were in lately, mainly from Dean, but the ideas were vague and he wasn’t paying much attention anyway, not with the new house he and Chloe had just bought and the repairs and touch ups they were doing. He was finally in a place in his life where he was really happy. There wasn’t an apocalypse looming or a crazy Chuck or Amara running wild and threatening to destroy everything. It was good, all good, and he planned to take the time to smell the roses and appreciate everything he had. And he had a lot. More than he deserved, but everything he wanted. Like he had taken a knife and carved out the life he wanted. A small and familiar voice rang out in the distance, and Sam looked up and grinned as he saw DJ running through the job site. He almost held up a hand to stop him, but DJ stopped himself before he made it to an unsafe area and waved frantically when they locked eyes. As he went over to DJ he looked around for Chloe, knowing she couldn’t be far behind, and saw her just before he scooped up DJ, and smiled, blowing her a kiss back. He gave his son a few tickles as he settled him on his waist, and jogged over to meet Chloe. “This is a really nice surprise,” he greeted her, giving her a real kiss. He set DJ to his feet and took the tote and cooler from Chloe, and with another kiss, wrapped his arm around her waist as they started to walk towards a nice and empty spot of grass near the water. “How’s that? That work for you guys?” Chloe leaned into Sam with a smile and reached up to brush his sweaty hair away from his eyes. With the blanket over her arm, she followed alongside Sam to find a decent spot to sit down on. "Yes. I think this is perfect. Thumbs up, or down, DJ?" Chloe asked the young boy who replied with two thumbs up and a happy dance. Chloe laughed and spread out the blanket over the grass before moving to sit down to take out the food. "This was DJ's idea, by the way. I said we could surprise you for lunch and I figured we would go out, but he wanted to eat by the water." She had an assortment of cold cut sandwiches in the cooler, along with some macaroni salad, Capri sun for DJ and iced tea for the adults. She knew that Sam had quite the appetite while he was at work, so she had made more than enough sandwiches for them all. "Oh, I hate to bother you while you're on break, but I think there's something wrong with the plumbing in the guest bathroom. It's so noisy when you turn on the water and I noticed the water is a little rusty." Buying a new house was always such a hassle and it seemed like they were finding new issues on a daily basis. Laughing, Sam gave a playful roll of his eyes at DJ’s happy dance, and put the cooler and tote down on the blanket Chloe had just laid out. It was nice seeing DJ that happy. He hadn’t been exactly worried about him, but his son was never as quick with his smiles as a six year old should be. He wasn’t going to question it or point it out though, he was just going to enjoy it. “Oh yeah?” he said, while he grabbed one of the sandwiches that Chloe had laid out. “It was a good idea. It’s been forever since we had a picnic lunch like this.” As he spoke, one of the ducks started quacking loudly as it chased another one into the water, and a second later they were joined by a gaggle of quacking, flapping ducks in the water. “I’ll check that out when I get home. It could be a bad pipe or something. I think the water was off for about a year before we bought the house, so it could just be that it hasn’t been used in a while, but I’ll take a look. Probably eventually have to replace the entire plumbing thing.” And the electrical, and the AC. None of it seemed really bad, but it was kind of older and he wanted to nip things in the bud before they had a real issue and the cost to fix it was double what replacing it would have been. The finding a new issue nearly every day was getting old, but having a home of their own and the security it provided their little family was well worth it. “What do you guys have planned for after you leave here?” "Is it even really a picnic if you don't get chased by some wild geese or crazy ducks?" She teased playfully and grabbed a Capri Sun for DJ, along with a sandwich on plain white bread instead of a roll. Chloe handed him the drink and then unwrapped the sandwich for him, before getting one for herself. She moved to get closer to Sam and leaned against him with a smile, rubbing her hand over his leg. She cringed at the thought of needing to replace all the plumbing, and she wondered how much that would cost. "Okay. If the water hasn't been used in a year, that would definitely make sense." She agreed with a nod and unwrapped a turkey sandwich, taking a bite. Chloe turned to look over at DJ and smiled over how happy he was, eating his lunch and watching the ducks play around. "I'm not sure, yet. I was thinking maybe we would stop by the playground for a bit and maybe enjoy the swings or something. He really loves that one tire swing. What do you want for dinner? Any special requests?" Chuckling, Sam took another bite of his sandwich and leaned a little into Chloe when she drew closer. It was nice how things had turned around in his life. About a decade ago he would have never dreamed that he’d be here, like this, completely content and with a wife that his dreams were made of, and a brilliant son that he knew was going to grow into an amazing man. He hadn’t been happy to be here when he’d first arrived, but now he couldn’t imagine going back home. “It could be something simple, just letting the water run for a little while. I’ll check it out though. Lucky I have some friends that do plumbing and electricity, and roofing, or I’m sure this would cost us an arm and a leg.” It wasn’t going to be cheap, but at least they would be able to work things out with him. He nodded and kissed Chloe’s temple. “I’d love to put one up in the backyard, but I don’t think the branches of any of those trees would support the weight.” He shrugged a little, leaning forward to grab his tea. “Maybe surprise me about dinner. I’m not picky. DJ might have a few ideas.” And Sam was sure those ideas would be mac and cheese, tacos, or pizza. None of which he would complain about. “After we get done moving in, we’re gonna need a vacation,” Sam laughed. “Seriously. We had fun before, we should pick another place and go soon.” “I was pretty lucky with the house I moved into years ago. We didn’t have any major issues.” Then again, it was quite possible that Lucifer had intimidated the sellers into making sure there were no surprises. “Can’t you put up a freestanding tire swing? Like-” Chloe paused in thought, not sure how to describe what she was thinking. “I’ll draw you a picture later, but I’m sure it can be done. It’s not tied to a tree at the park, but it is part of a larger swing set.” DJ would absolutely be thrilled to have one at home. “Surprise you about dinner, okay. DJ always has a few ideas.” She added with a laugh and looked over at the young boy who was happily chatting up the ducks. “Ooh, yes. Another vacation would be absolutely fantastic. I think we should definitely do that. Should we go somewhere with DJ this time?” She was sure that he would be happy to stay in Madison with Dean, but she didn’t want him to feel excluded. “In a screwy way, it’s kinda nice to have things to be done to the place. To make it our own and not just live among the - ruins of someone else’s life.” Sam didn’t know if he was making sense out loud, but in his head it made perfect sense. It was their house now, and all these touches and repairs they had to make were making it more theirs. “I could do that with a swing,” Sam chewed thoughtfully. “I’d have to find a base for it, or get some made. It probably wouldn’t be too hard. And down the road if we decide to get an above ground pool or put one in, we can just move it.” Yeah, he was excited, this was the first thing that he had ever owned, in his own name, that he had and was still working for. It meant a lot. He was building a mini mansion in his head and it looked great. Sam shook his head with a smile as he watched DJ, and reached for another sandwich. He was starving, and glad it looked like she had brought a few. “Maybe we can visit Disney - world? Land? And bring him, towards the end of summer before he goes back to school. We could invite Trixie and Rory, too.” He doubted either of them would want to go away for a few days with him in the group, even though Rory seemed to tolerate him, and like DJ. Maybe they could get Dean, Lisa and Charlie to come too, but it would probably be too close to their wedding to even consider it. “I was thinking more of an us trip, just you and me. Something cheesy and romantic since we didn’t really get a honeymoon. Somewhere we can see the sights from the window and I can keep you in bed all day.” “Yeah, I see what you’re saying.” Chloe agreed with a nod. Even though it was a little overwhelming, it was nice to put their own touch into the house. “I am highly confident in your abilities to put up a tire swing for DJ. You can always ask Dean to help you.” She suggested, not wanting Sam to take on so much work himself. “I think we should definitely do something with the kids, and I would love to invite Trixie and Rory to come along, absolutely.” She still wasn’t sure if Trixie would ever accept Sam, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t keep trying. “It’s okay that we didn’t have a honeymoon, but I wouldn’t complain if you wanted to go somewhere.” Chloe turned to look at him with a smile and pressed a kiss to his jaw, rubbing over his arms. “But maybe we should finish working on the house first?” She hated being practical, but it was necessary. “I asked Dean to help me paint a few rooms and build a fence, I think I should give the old man a break. I’ll look into it, it doesn’t seem like it would take long.” And it wasn’t like Dean ever asked him to do things around his house, not that he was even here when his brother got his. A younger him could have been doing grunt work alongside Dean for all he knew Sam wasn’t going to give up on Trixie liking him, at least a little, but he wasn’t going to be pushy either. Things like vacations and dinners and even just random nights out at bowling alleys or the movies - he would ask to include her if she wanted to join them, but he wasn’t going to make her like him if her heart wasn’t in it. He hoped one day it would be though. “I do want to go somewhere. I’m old and I get burned out fast, I need to be somewhere else with my hot wife for a few days” he joked. Truthfully, he wasn’t really comfortable unless he was traveling. Passenger seat in the Impala and road trips across the country were a large part of his life, and something he knew he would never forget. He would always be at least a little bit restless no matter how settled he was. And he was settled. He leaned down to kiss Chloe on the lips. “We’ll finish the house first. Might ask Jack to wave his wand and take care of a few things for us.” He laughed then, but he wondered if Jack was even capable of stuff like that. Mrs. Butters seemed to be. Chloe laughed at the old man comment, enjoying the dynamic that Sam shared with his older brother. “Alright, but you should at least let me supervise. Just in case you hurt yourself somehow.” Even though Sam was usually careful, you could never be too sure. “You’ll have no complaints from me about taking a trip. I’ll check out the transportation center and see what the options are.” Chloe curled up against him with a dreamy sigh, her hand rubbing over his thigh as she listened to him talk. “Wait, what? Can Jack really do that?” She pulled back a little to look up at him in surprise. “I mean, obviously, you’re kidding about the wand part. He’s an angel, not a wizard. But can he really do stuff like that? I’ve never really asked him what he is actually capable of.” “You can supervise,” Sam grinned over at her. “I have this carpenters belt that you have to wear though. That’ll probably distract me immensely, but as long as you kiss any boo-boos I get.” He was thinking of her in just the belt, but he couldn’t really voice his thoughts with DJ standing nearby. Sam hoped the waggle of his eyebrows and the grin he wore clued her in. “France would be nice, I think I remember Paris being on the list before. I’ve always wanted to go to the Louvre,” he put the rest of his sandwich down and wrapped his arm around her. “I don’t know, honestly. Jack’s capable of a lot of stuff, and a lot more since he came back from the Empty. If I asked him, he would try, he was always wanting to help us back home.” Sam paused for a moment. “I did tell you that Jack is the new God, at home, didn’t I? He’s a few days off I think, when he comes from. But he doesn’t know. I have no idea how he would take it.” Sam gave a shrug, wrapped his other arm around Chloe and pulled her closer for a kiss. He’d much rather do that than ponder things he’d probably never have an answer to. “Ewww!” Sam looked up at the giggling figure of DJ, and gave Chloe another kiss before he got up to chase his son around. |
