Sam hated working on Saturdays. Normally his schedule allowed him to have the weekends off, and that had been a big plus when he’d taken the job months ago. But there were occasionally days like this one, days that the workweek bled over into the weekend and he and a few of the guys on his crew had gotten far enough behind that working was necessary. The overtime pay would be nice, and he was enjoyed the thought of going home from a workday to Chloe. It wasn’t often that he got to do that, go home to someone who wasn’t DJ, but as he’d asked her to keep him that day he was going to be able to see them both. It was just as nice as he expected it to be, opening his front door to sounds of people and the smell of cooking food, and after he initially greeted them both with kisses hello he hurried off to shower and change his dirty clothes so that he could get back to them. “Hey babe,” he greeted again as he ran his fingers through his still drying hair. Sam came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on the cheek. “Everything go okay?” When Sam had asked if she could watch DJ while he took in some extra hours, she had been more than happy to agree. Her and DJ spent some time at the park, until he started to get cranky, and then she took him home for a nap. While he slept, Chloe decided that she would have a home cooked meal for Sam when he came home. They were constantly eating take out and it would be a nice change of pace. Once DJ was done with his nap they had lunch and went off to the store to pick up what she needed for dinner. Chloe started on dinner and DJ assisted, with the two of them making just a small mess. She had two pans of lasagna since DJ had insisted on regular, instead of veggie. When Sam walked in the door she had been going in for a hug when she noticed how awful he smelled, and he went right to the shower. She slid both pans into the oven to heat them up and had DJ help her set the table for dinner. "Yes, of course. DJ was a perfect angel and he even helped with dinner." Chloe turned in his arms and looked up at him, cupping his face in her hands. "How was work, handsome?" “A perfect angel who was helpful with dinner? You sure it was DJ? ” He glanced around and his eyes feel on DJ who was in the process of rolling his eyes at him and chuckled, leaning into Chloes touch. He had known DJ wouldn’t be a problem for Chloe, he seemed to have taken to her from the beginning, and he was generally a good kid anyway, but Sam was grateful she had agreed. He wasn’t going to say it outloud but after he was already on his way home, he remembered the last time that he had left DJ with Chloe and how he had put them both in danger. “Work was - unexciting as always. If you had asked me that a few years ago I’d have a more interesting answer for you.” Not that he missed that chapter of his life, he wouldn’t have a lot of the things he had now if he was still a hunter. “Whatever you have cooking in there smells delicious, way better than take out,” he kissed Chloe fully on the lips which elicited a giggled ‘ewww’ from DJ and made him laugh. Her fingers moved to sweep through his hair, twirling the strands around in curls. "Unexciting is better than having your life on the line." Chloe mentioned with a faint smile, thinking of how Trixie and Rory had commented about her career choice. Her hands moved to run down his chest as she glanced over at the oven. "It's lasagna. I was told it is your favorite? Or, at least one of your favorites. There's a regular one, and one made with all sorts of disgusting vegetables. According to DJ, that is." She looked over at him with a smile and wrapped her arms around Sam, resting her face against his chest. "You're nice and comfy, and you smell so much better now." “Unexciting is boring, and I think it suits my personality, boring and not life threatening,” Sam smiled, only half serious. He had thought repeatedly over the years that if he and Dean had retired after they had saved the world he wouldn’t have lost his brother, but it was stupid to think about now. He had him here, with the awesome additions of DJ and Chloe, and all he could do was hope he stayed here. And to have more evenings like this. It really was a treat for him. “Veggie lasagna?” It was more of a statement than a question and his eyebrow shot up in surprise, but that was one of those things he never got the chance to have unless it was frozen or if he was in a restaurant or diner that served it. His skills in the kitchen were minor and limited to boiling pasta and heating stuff up, and it was just easier to order out or go to a drive thru, all of which DJ seemed to love. “I’d offer to hire you, but I could never afford you.” He kissed the top of her head and wrapped his arms tighter around Chloe, very willing to stand there all night holding her. “You guys! Can we eat now before I starve to death?” Sam glanced over at DJ who was standing nearby with his hands on his hips, a completely exaggerated stance. “Fine, fine,” Sam said to DJ as he parted from Chloe. “You can have more of my smell good chest action after dinner,” he told her. “What do you need me to do, pretty lady?” "You're not wrong about it being boring." The transition had been a serious adjustment for her as well. Not getting up in the morning to solve homicides left life lacking substantially. It gave her more time to spend with Trixie, but she never seemed to want to do that anymore. "Yes, veggie lasagna, and I would hold off on that job offer. I'm not the greatest cook in the world, so it might be terrible." She looked at DJ and laughed at his exaggeration. "We ate like three hours ago. You can't be that hungry." She moved to stand next to Sam, rubbing her hand over his back. "Nothing. You can sit down at the table and enjoy. It's in the oven right now, and DJ helped set the table. Just need to get something to drink, and then we should be good." “This is really nice. It’s been a long time since we sat down at a table that was set - and we didn’t get a check at the end. I didn’t even know DJ knew how to set a table.” Sam smiled down at Chloe. “I can get the drinks. Capri Sun for little man, beer for me and -,” he looked at Chloe. “Beer for you? Water?” Chloe was happy to see that Sam had so much appreciation for the simple act, and she hoped that it wasn’t disgusting. “Beer works for me, thanks.” She gave his ass a discreet squeeze and moved back to the kitchen to check on the food. Five minutes later she was carrying in each tray of lasagna. She went back to grab something to serve the food with, and cut DJ a piece of the regular one, then Sam with his veggie one. She cut herself a piece of the veggie one and sat down to enjoy dinner. Sam got the drinks out of the kitchen and sat them by each individual plate at the table. It was like they were a real family sitting down at the table. He wished that one day they could do something like this more, and include Trixie, but he wasn’t sure she’d ever actually forgive him for getting her mother kidnapped. And he didn’t blame her for that. “This looks great, babe,” he said as he was served a hot piece of lasagna, the smell coming from it outstanding. “DJ, put your phone away while we’re eating or I might eat yours too.” He held out his hand and DJ handed over his phone. Sam took a sip of his beer and picked up his fork, more than ready to enjoy dinner and the great atmosphere that came with it. Chloe looked over at Sam with a smile, and reached out to give his knee a squeeze. "Thank you. I'm glad you like it. I should come over more often and cook for you two." She would invite them over to the house, but she wasn't sure if Trixie was ready to embrace the reality of their relationship. Chloe took a pull from her beer and dug into her food. She was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn't taste awful, and was actually pretty good. Once they were finished with dinner, she had DJ help clear the table for dessert, which was a store bought cake that the young boy was very eager for. |
