Re: Nina and Kaz
And Kaz missed his Wraith. Inej could sneak in anywhere, be practically invisible, and learn everything there was to know of someone. Then she report it back to him and he'd store it for later use. Trading in secrets was the most profitable business a man could ever run. However, it wasn't just because of secrets that Kaz missed Inej. For better or for worse, she was his girl. Even if she would never truly be his because he could never truly be hers. At least, not yet anyway.
"Pity. Repercussions are what make selling secrets so very profitable." Which meant they would have to rely on other means to make money. Good thing Kaz was becoming more familiar with the casino. He had a wealth of knowledge thanks to Karl. He was almost ready to run their first plan. Nina would thrive in that environment; she was a master flirt and capable of distraction. That's what counted in a place like that. Being a distraction.
Not that Kaz couldn't pull off his card tricks without her plunging neckline in view of all the men in the room, but it certainly did help.
"I am. I'm putting together a plan. We should be ready to implement it in a week or so." Kaz wanted to ensure all of his 'ducks were in a row' before he put it into action. They couldn't afford any screw ups.
Kaz barely managed to avoid stiffening at the mention of 'cemeteries.' Being around the dead was always difficult for Kaz. All he could see, smell, taste, was that night on the barge. Buried beneath corpses, including his own brother's, and the coldness that seeped through him. It was like he was drowning in an ocean. An ocean of death, decay, and his brother's lifeless eyes always staring up at the night sky. Eyes he would never forget as he used his brother to help float him to shore.
The sound of the crowd cheering pulled Kaz from his thoughts and he reached for his water, taking a sip. It took everything he had to keep his gloved hand from shaking on the glass. Get it together, Brekker, he mentally hissed at himself. Breathe or you'll faint and you are not fucking fainting in front of a bunch of strangers.
"When do you plan to go?" Kaz asked, training his gaze back on Nina only after he was certain it was safe to do so.
