Who: Matt/Eve What: Matt comes to visit while Eve is in the clinic When: Feb 25 Where: the clinic Rating: low
Eve was already bored. She knew she had to be in the clinic until she healed more, but she wasn’t good at staying still and doing ‘nothing’. She’d already tried to read, try to do brain teasers, and downloaded a few apps with games to try and spend her time, but none of them kept her interest for long.
She sighed. This was torture. At least she had Jello for dessert for lunch, right? Maybe. She reached for the Jello more gingerly than she’d normally have to and started to eat it. Eve was going to be incredibly bored again once she finished eating that.
When Eve texted Matt about a raincheque for their drinks date, obviously Matt felt a little disappointed, but he understood. While Hell’s devil heard the house and what happened, he’d actually been in the shower, and unable to get out and there by the time everything ended. Besides, he’d been able to hear Kristof and Matt knew Eve was in good hands.
Instead, he decided to go visit Eve. Matt brought with him a care package, although not knowing Eve very well, he had to reach out to Savannah for help. Which is how he possessed a basket with a new spell book, some snacks she might like, and a few other odds and ends.
A very kind employee showed Matt to Eve, as he continued his ever constant pretend to be blind charade.
“Hey,” he greeted Eve, when the employee left them alone. “I come bearing company and things so hopefully you’ll be less bored.” Matt, of course, had a grin on his face.
Once again Eve found herself thankful that Matt was blind because she knew she looked like a sight. Eve was mostly worried about freaking out Savannah over anyone else, but she also had a hard time with being pitied and pity faces were the worst.
“A knight in shining armour, huh?” She sounded appreciative. “Thanks. It’ll keep me from trying to break out of here.” A very slow and careful prison break since some of her ribs were healing. “Sorry again about canceling. I promise if it was an excuse, I’d just tell you I had cramps or something.”
While Matt could make out the outline of Eve, he couldn’t ever see specifics. Although he could hear her injuries, Matt didn’t plan on saying so. That might freak her out a bit.
“I definitely don’t have shining armour,” he joked. Matt gently set the basket of goodies on Eve’s bed and kissed her temple, lightly, before he located a seat. “I’ll keep that in mind if you ever tell me you have cramps,” Matt laughed. “How are you actually feeling?” Hell’s devil tried to avoid expressions of pity.
The kiss was a bit of a surprise and, yet again, Eve was relieved to be able to have a very real moment without anyone actually seeing. She blinked, but recovered quickly enough. “Actually? Like I had a ceiling fall on me. But don’t tell Savannah that.” Despite her child being old enough to know better, Eve didn’t want anyone reminding Savannah of Eve’s apparent mortality. Though the truth was Eve had no idea what would happen if she had ‘died’ in the house or if she’d have just been crushed until someone found her, awkwardly alive. This whole ‘wearing many hats’ thing didn’t come with a rulebook.
“But by Wednesday it should be nothing.” She paused. Fuck. She hadn’t actually told him about the ghost thing, had she? Conveniently she had left that out, though she had no idea if anyone else filled him in. She sighed softly. “My six months as an angel is up. Soon I’ll be a ghost again.”
Matt smirked. “I will not be telling anything to your daughter, but she seems perceptive.” Hell’s devil could tell that from his brief time interacting with Eve’s daughter at work. “It sounds painful.” Not unlike injuries Matt sustained at times.
He paused. Nobody had mentioned such a thing to him. “So you spend six months as a ghost and six months as an angel?” That sounded complicated. “Can you still talk and stuff when you’re an angel?” He didn’t know how this worked, after all. “Why?...or I guess how?” This didn’t change the fact that Matt liked Eve, but it certainly left him with a few questions.
She gave a little nod and felt a bit bad for not mentioning it prior, but admittedly it had been nice to feel a little bit ‘normal’ even if Eve had never been ‘normal’ to begin with. “Yeah… it’s complicated.” This was more of a preface than brushing off the questions. Eve let out a little sigh. “Savannah and I were captured by humans who found out about the supernatural and in trying to escape, I was killed. Found out there was a whole afterlife and I was stubborn enough not to move on. Mostly because I wanted to make sure Savannah was safe. So I sort of resided to living, for lack of a better word, as a ghost in the ghost world. Of course Paige and Lucas got themselves into trouble and I had to make a deal with the Fates so they could live and then later the Fates called in my favour. They planned on me taking up the whole angel gig, but I didn’t want to give up being a ghost entirely, so we made a deal. It mostly works for them, of course.”
Matt felt glad for his choice to sit. Mostly because Eve offered Matt a lot of information and he definitely needed to process everything she said.
“You were captured…by humans.” No, Matt did not bother to hide the dislike in his voice. A kidnapping sounded exactly like something Hell’s Devil would want to stop. “And then killed.” Her words continued and Matt slow blinked a few times. Death, ghosts, fates.
“So the ‘too long, didn’t read’ version is you’re a ghost half the year and an angel with a sword the other half?” Matt couldn’t help the chuckle. “So, in summation, your life is a little complicated?”
Well, Eve had to give the guy credit that he could adapt well to weird. Maybe it helped that he had to adapt to being blind in a world made for the seeing. She found herself smiling. “That’s about right. I hope you’ll understand why I didn’t lead with that on the whole five minute date thing.” Or the last one they’d been on. It was one of those things you should work up to, though technically she’d been on a ticking clock.
“The benefit of being in Madison though is that there’s a few different rules here for ghosts. I learned how to manifest so I can be seen, heard, and touch.” With concentration and she could get tired, but the more she did it, the stronger she got. Plus she was too stubborn to give in easily.
Matt ran around the streets dressed as a fucking Devil, so he couldn’t judge someone for choices made for her. Even if it read like a strange book he’d probably never read. And he understood how it felt to be in a world not made for him, hadn’t been made for him since the accident decades ago. “No, I get it.” He decided to be honest with Eve.
“I’m not completely blind. When the accident happened it left me so I can see akin to sonar. So, I can see an outline of you, but not specifics like your hair colour. It’s like the world is on fire. I use it to hunt criminals back home.” Matt shrugged and held out his hands in a what are you gonna do? gesture. “I don’t tell too many people. Jessica knows, but that’s because she knows me from back home.” Jen too, but Matt hadn’t really spoken to her too much.
“I’m glad. I’d hate to go six months without talking to or seeing you.” Matt liked Eve and saw no reason to hide it.
That was surprising and now she had to wonder if he’d seen any of the faces she made - could you see that with sonar? Thankfully she hadn’t decided to do something embarrassing like pick her nose in front of him or something.
“So you’re like a superhero.” Eve didn’t sound like she was judging. She and the world she lived in back home did a lot of justice of their own outside the lines so she wasn’t about to judge someone else either. The world wasn’t great and police didn’t do shit, so of course people had to take things into their own hands from time to time. Her eyes widened a little, full of interest when she asked, “Does that mean you have a suit?” She was careful not to call it a costume.
She smiled at his last remark. “I’m sure some people would disagree with you, but I like being around too.”
While he could see some things, including facial expressions, Matt didn’t plan on commenting. How rude would that be? He didn’t want to make Eve feel like she had to hide her reactions around him.
“If you asked Jessica Jones she’d say yes.” Matt didn’t like the moniker, but he also realized he lived the life of a superhero, but nothing like Captain America. “I do my best to help those who need it back home.”
At the suit question, Matt chuckled. “I do. I showed up wearing it, which, I have to admit, threw me a bit. If you want to see it, I’m sure I could show you.”
Matt rather liked hearing her smile and seeing it. “Who are these very wrong people?” he joked.
“Okay well now I need to see you in the suit at some point.” She wondered what it looked like. She’d leave the ‘what’s your name’ question to when he was in it, but Eve found herself way more interested in the answers than she ever thought she’d be about superheroes.
“You haven’t seen my stubborn side yet.” She smirked, but appreciated the compliment. “But demons aren’t usually a big fan of mine. Has something to do with the fact I don’t let them do whatever they want.” And she was okay with that.
“I’m sure I can arrange for you to see me in the suit. But, after you’ve healed.” He grinned, though, and found it nice to be open with someone about his vigilante side. Plus, her actual interest helped Matt feel more at ease.
“Ah, yes, I’m sure that wouldn’t win you popularity contests with demons.” Matt didn’t actually think he’d have a conversation about actual demons with anyone before his arrival in Madison Valley.
“Well, something tells me I’ll enjoy getting to know you, stubbornness and all.”
She gave a dramatic huff like that was a ridiculous thing to ask for, but there was no bite to the sound. Eve knew she at least had to give herself a few more days before she escaped, but she was really banking on waking up a ghost in a few days.
“You’ll have to let me know if you regret saying that later.” She teased, but it was nice not to be just called a bitch and dismissed.
“I will.” He grinned and settled in to entertain Eve for a bit.
